Our Scripture this morning is Psalm 121. As you are turning to this psalm in your bibles, let me give you a little background to this psalm. Psalm 121 is found in the last book of the Psalms, book Five. It is also the second of the fifteen Songs of Ascents (120-134). These Psalms are called the Songs of Ascent because these were the psalms the pilgrims sang as they ascended the hill leading into Jerusalem and the Temple located on Mount Zion. These were also the psalms the priests sang as they ascended the fifteen steps leading into the Temple. Consequently, their primary function is to prepare us for worship. With this in mind, let us give our attention to this beautiful psalm.
I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
The main message of this Psalm is not hard to find: My help comes from the Lord.
What is not so obvious is why this confession is so vital to authentic, God glorifying worship. To find our help in anything or anyone other than the Lord is idolatry.
