Me

The title of me message is - come closer to Jesus, here’s how...
We can have a closer relationship with Jesus only with the Holy Spirit
There have been so many times where I have wondered what it would be like to be one of he Disciples and have face to face time with Jesus!
Chair illustration
Ultimately what I want most is to be close to Jesus and have a growing relationship with Him, What about you?

We

What are some of the questions you would ask Jesus if He was here face to face?
Maybe you work in the medical field and have wondered, how would Jesus treat this patient?
Or maybe your in construction and have wondered how Jesus would build or repair house today
Perhaps your a teacher and have wondered how would Jesus share this lesson?
More importantly maybe you would ask how to gain victory in your life if you could talk to Him face to face
or What His plan is for your life,
Maybe you would want to ask Him how to handle a challenging family issue
or Maybe how to be a better husband or wife
Perhaps you would like to ask Him how much longer will time on this earth remain,
Or maybe you would ask Him if your ready for Him to return and to go home.
Really when we get down to the core issue
Ultimately What we want most is to be close to Jesus and have a growing relationship with Him
Now we may not be able to experience Jesus face to face as the Disciples did nevertheless before Jesus Ascended to Heaven He gave the Disciples very important information how to keep a close relationship even from a distance.
This morning we will look at a very important story in John chapter 16 that took the disciples by surprise
We find this story in John chapter 16

God

Jesus departs

5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

John 16:5–6 NKJV
“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Do you think it was easy for the Disciples to hear that Jesus would go away?
Matthew 16:23 ESV
But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Matthew 16:21–22 ESV
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
Was Jesus going to completely leave His Disciples or us?
John 14:18 NKJV
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
The promise of the Holy Spirit
John 16:7–8 NKJV
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
John 16:9 NKJV
of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
John 16:10 NKJV
of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
John 16:11 NKJV
of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
John 169
John 16:7–11 NKJV
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
It is through the Holy Spirit That we come closer to Jesus
Romans 8:14–16 ESV
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
John 14:25–27 ESV
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:
How do we receive the Holy Spirit?
We ask
and we ask through prayer
Jesus wants a close relationship with you
John 16:
John 16:12–13 NKJV
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
What must have been going through the minds of the Disciples?
He did not leave us orphaned though!
This statement is still true today, There are still things Jesus wants to tell us!
Lift Him Up Christ’s Favorite Subject, June 26

Christ, the Great Teacher, had an infinite variety of subjects from which to choose, but the one upon which He dwelt most largely was the endowment of the Holy Spirit (Selected Messages, 1:156).

In describing to His disciples the office work of the Holy Spirit, Jesus sought to inspire them with the joy and hope that inspired His own heart. He rejoiced because of the abundant help He had provided for His church. The Holy Spirit was the highest of all gifts that He could solicit from His Father for the exaltation of His people. The Spirit was to be given as a regenerating agent, and without this the sacrifice of Christ would have been of no avail. The power of evil had been strengthening for centuries, and the submission of men to this satanic captivity was amazing. Sin could be resisted and overcome only through the mighty agency of the Third Person of the Godhead, who would come with no modified energy, but in the fullness of divine power. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world’s Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church.

The story of the Berlin Wall
“A nation changed by prayer
One of the most dramatic moments in recent memory is the fall of the Berlin Wall. Few realize the mighty, concentrated prayer movement that led up to the breathtaking events in East Berlin on November 9, 1989.
In 1982, a young German pastor opened the doors of his church each Monday evening for prayer and discussions on freedom. These prayer sessions grew until one Monday night in October of 1989, eight thousand people crowded into the church. Thousands more stood outside the Church.
A nationwide freedom movement was birthed in the cradle of prayer. People by the tens of thousands in villages, towns, and cities across East Germany joined the intercessors.
On that Monday night in October, nearly one million people were praying for freedom.
Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, commenting on the absolute necessity of earnest intercession, The Pastor declared, “We realized that if we stopped praying,\ there would be no hope for change in Germany”
“One former communist government official who had worked with the Stasi, or East German secret police, gave this amazing testimony. “We were ready for anything, except for candles and prayer.” The Berlin Wall could not stand before the sound of the fervent prayers of God’s people united in seeking Him.”
