Missions - offering the gospel and dignity to people
Dignity -
Camp Karabin Mission Trip
Draw our attention to You. Correct any misunderstandings we have about Your Word. Inhabit the praises of Your people.
Genesis 14:17–24 ESV
17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”
Mystery around Melchizedek - what we know
Priest - all three places in scripture he is mentioned, he is referred to as priest. Curiously, he was called a priest before the Levites were were ever in existence. When introduced in Genesis, he was called a priest of the God Most High. In comparison, Jesus was called the Great High Priest.
King - of Salem, that is Jerusalem of old. Lived where the Canaanites were.
How did, at the same time God was calling Abram, Melchizedek appear as a priest and king devoted to the God Most High?
I tend to box bible characters in...
Titus 2:11–12 ESV
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Why was this man not the one through whom the promise would come?
Maybe because he was from Canaan. Maybe 1,000 other reasons...
Why was this man not the one through whom the promise would come?
Proverbs 16:9 ESV
9 The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Proverbs
But let’s take something else from this insight: Aren’t you glad we’re not the only Christians in the world. In Anderson county? In Elkhart? Boy I am!
Transformation requires people who love the Lord and love His people more than their career, their ministry and even their own lives.
David’s words
Psalm 110:4 ESV
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
you are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews writer’s words
gives a complete rundown (also mentioned in ch 5-6)
As a Christ Figure
King of Righteousness
King of Peace
Hebrews gives us the statement about his genealogy ‘without father or mother’, but that most likely refers to his parents not being listed in the record.
What he did
That Melchizedek was greater than Abram because he was a priest of the Most High God.
And that the tenth of the spoils given by Abram to Melchizedek was appropriate given the Christ figure he is presented as.
What he did
Brought nourishment to Abram’s men after the battles. We see the difference between this king and the king of Sodom. Melchizedek comes and offers good to Abram. King of Sodom comes and asks for something good from Abram.
What he said
He reminded us and Abram that God had fought the battle…v20
Blessed Abram by God Most High (El elyon) and blessed God Most High.
We say here that God is true and just and good. When we recognize God’s goodness as shown in the bestowal of divine benefits to His children, we bless God.
When we sing to Him for being a good, good Father...
When we count our many blessings, recognizing Him as the source...
When we lift His name on high...
When we turn our eyes on Jesus, looking full in His wonderful face, letting the thing of earth grow strangely dim, WE BLESS GOD!
