Second Lesson we looked at chapters 14 & 15
a. Samson begins his ministry as judge by going down into Timnah to find a philistine wife. - this is his Holy Spirit calling.
This was not a lapse of judgment on his part but a well thought out plan to initiate war with the philistines.
b. Sampson is showing Israel that the philistines are of the world and that marriage fidelity means nothing to them.
c. Sampson Punishes the philistines as the God ordained Judge - Samson captures the 300 foxes.
d. How Israel comes against Samson is like how the church throughout history who has occasionally turned on Gods messengers.
e. The Judahites would rather live as slaves under the Philistines - Instead of living under the Theocratic rule of the Lord their God.
f. Sampson Kills 1000 Philistines with the Jawbone of an ass.
g. Sampson teaches us that even with all his strength we are dependent on God for small things like water and the air we breath and this all comes from God.
Samson is now going to experience a lapse in faith and spiritual declension. in chapter 16
This is a sad chapter in Samson’s life Judges Chapter 16

16 Samson went to Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute, and he went in to her. 2 The Gazites were told, “Samson has come here.” And they surrounded the place and set an ambush for him all night at the gate of the city. They kept quiet all night, saying, “Let us wait till the light of the morning; then we will kill him.” 3 But Samson lay till midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts, and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron.

4 After this he loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5 And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.” 6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could subdue you.”

7 Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she bound him with them. 9 Now she had men lying in ambush in an inner chamber. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he snapped the bowstrings, as a thread of flax snaps when it touches the fire. So the secret of his strength was not known.

10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have mocked me and told me lies. Please tell me how you might be bound.” 11 And he said to her, “If they bind me with new ropes that have not been used, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 12 So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And the men lying in ambush were in an inner chamber. But he snapped the ropes off his arms like a thread.

13 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and fasten it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 14 So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks of his head and wove them into the web. And she made them tight with the pin and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled away the pin, the loom, and the web.

15 And she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me where your great strength lies.” 16 And when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death. 17 And he told her all his heart, and said to her, “A razor has never come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If my head is shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak and be like any other man.”

18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up again, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands. 19 She made him sleep on her knees. And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. 20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him. 21 And the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze shackles. And he ground at the mill in the prison. 22 But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

The Death of Samson

23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to rejoice, and they said, “Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand.” 24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god. For they said, “Our god has given our enemy into our hand, the ravager of our country, who has killed many of us.” 25 And when their hearts were merry, they said, “Call Samson, that he may entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he entertained them. They made him stand between the pillars. 26 And Samson said to the young man who held him by the hand, “Let me feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the house was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and on the roof there were about 3,000 men and women, who looked on while Samson entertained.

28 Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 And Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and he leaned his weight against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he bowed with all his strength, and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he had killed during his life. 31 Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years.

a. vs 1-3 Samson went to Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute, and he went in to her.
Now we are not to excuse Sampson’s behavior - He did work alone and traveled long distances by himself -
But now through Samson’s sin he will demonstrating in his own life what Israel is doing towards God as well.
Israel played the Harlot
Israel played the Harlot
Israel played the harlot
Israel was committing spiritual adultery with the Gods of the Philistines.
So Samson starts chasing prostitutes.
Samson comes out at midnight and he gets up from this prostitute.
And as the great spirit anointed Jude of Israel the Christ of Israel
He rips the gates and the posts the beams up out of the place right out of the ground.
Who knows how many 1000’s of pounds this ways and walks into Israelite territory 40 miles away. From Gaza to Hebron up a hill.
The Lord is still with Samson despite his great sin and lapse of faith - God had not left him.
Think of what that gate of the city represented?
All their defences are down now
Lessons to learn from this
Christians can commit horrible sins
Abraham was a polygamist
Samson went into a prostitute.
David had Bathsheba and killed Uriah
Peter denied Jesus three times.
This does not justify theirs of our sins - But it shows us that Christ can and does wash away those sins.
Who was Sampson - He was Gods man - doing Gods work
But Samson had let his relationship lapse with God otherwise he would have never fallen into the arms of a prostitute.
Activity in the Kings business does not make up for neglect of the King - Repeat this statement
If you spend all your days serving the king and you neglect your personal walk with him - then it will undo the things your heart longs to see accomplished in your life.
He should have learned from this tragedy in his life but he didn’t
b. Verse 4-20 Samson sleeps with Delilah another Philistine prostitute.
Verse 4-20
4 After this he loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5 And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver. (Probably 200 pounds of silver)” 6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could subdue you. (Or oppress you just the way the Philistines oppressed Israel they want to oppress Samson.)
And she made them tight with the pin and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled away the pin, the loom, and the web.

15 And she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? 13 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and fasten it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 14 So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks of his head and wove them into the web. 15 And she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me where your great strength lies.” 16 And when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death. (Samson is so blinded by sexual rage that he cannot even see that Delilah is doing to him exactly what he was doing to the lady from Timnah she is playing a game with him.) 17 And he told her all his heart, and said to her, “A razor has never come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb.
( This is a nice way of saying they had sexual intercourse) And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. 20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
Samson begins his downward course of disobedience against God.
The 5 philistine Lords come to Delilah and offer her all this money 200 pounds of silver each because they want to afflict him.
Just as we have been oppressing Israel we want to oppress Samson.
Delilah is playing a sexual game with Samson - The modern term would be called bondage.
Sampson lets play a game and let me tie you up lets add perversion to our sexual play.
And because Samson believes Delilah enjoys seeing him tied up and helpless for fun and for perverted pleasure he goes along with the game.
And she asks where is Samson strength lies.
Samson new that the philistines believed in magic so in his answers to Delilah he is poking fun at the philistines.
But in doing so he is on terrible ground with the Philistines
Its magic Delilah (That somehow - Un-dried chords, new ropes, weaving my hair, poking fun at philistine superstitious faith.
But because Samson is playing fast and loose with the Holy vow he has made Samson is more guilty than this Philistine prostitute is.
The lesson for us is - You must fear sin and compromise. Involvement with playing around with evil people will drag you down until you fall totally as Samson.
You may get by for a time messing around for a while - but their are always people waiting in a backroom that a lurking and that will destroy you when your exposed.
You play with fire and you will get burned.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), .
I have been doing this or that and know one knows and everyone thinks I’m a great christian man - If you play around with sin you will get burned and exposed.
He who hardens his neck being often reproved shall suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy.
A business man who was fooling around with prostitutes while he was on the road went into the bathroom and read on the mirror one morning written in lipstick “ WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF AIDS.”
You can mess around for a while but it will catch up with you.
Samson finally gives into Delilah's 4th request - And he tells her of the Vow he has made with the Lord and if she cuts his hair then the Lords strength will leave him.
Why is their a difference from this time he slept with a prostitute and the Lord was with him in Gaza
But now the Lord has departed from him with Delilah WHY?
He cut off his hair
He had renounced his vow
He had abandoned God.
Its all different it wasn't just a lapse in faith
Samson abandoned God and God abandoned him.
By cutting his hair he cut himself off from the living God
And to teach him this lesson God had abandoned him.
Why was it so easy for the Philistines to defeat the Israelite?
Was it because they were greater militarily?
Israel could have at anytime raised up and mustered a greater stronger army than the Philistines.
Israel and Samson were in captivity to the Philistines was for only one reason _-THEY WERE FAITHLESS.
Do modern Americans think that Christianity is to week to withstand the oppression - Anytime we want we have the power to kick the anti Christian American establishment. -
So why are they in power
Its because we have been week
and the church has failed
Its because we have been disobedient
Its because ewe have given in
Its because we have cut our hair.
Its not DAGON’s the anti christian establishment, the humanist the statists
When are ways please the LORD - our enemies will be destroyed.
We have become our own enemies - And that was the situation Samson was in.
C. Verse 19 Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ( Or the spirit of God left him)
Verse 19 Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ( Or the spirit of God left him
Something we should cover because some people use this verse to say and teach to others that Samson lost his salvation.
And the scripture clearly say this in
But lets look at what the WCF teaches us in Chapter 5 section 5

The most wise, righteous, and gracious God doth oftentimes leave, for a season, His own children to manifold temptations, and the corruption of their own hearts, to chastise them for their former sins, or to discover unto them the hidden strength of corruption and deceitfulness of their hearts, that they may be humbled; (2 Chron. 32:25–26, 31, 2 Sam. 24:1) and, to raise them to a more close and constant dependence for their support upon Himself, and to make them more watchful against all future occasions of sin, and for sundry other just and holy ends. (2 Cor. 12:7–9, Ps. 73, Ps. 77:1, 10, 12, Mark 14:66–72, John 21:15–17)

God leaves us by withdrawing from us for a period of time to discipline us or humble us.
This usually is when we become cocky and we are falling into sin.
God does not love us unconditionally.
God does give us conditions - we must remain faithful to the Lord -even if we fall into sin occasionally - God does not leave us
But if we keep tempting God this is what happens
The chastening of Sampson.

So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he had killed during his life. 31 Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years.

Disobedience to God
If you act like your non christian friends.
If you act like a philistine
You will bring disgrace to the Lord your God.
There is an added burdensome situation to being reformed.
Becasue the world and and Non denominational church will say
If you have any public disobedience the world and the church will say what is so great about being reformed.
To whom much is given much is required.
D. Hear is Samson and Israel under the thumb of the Philistines.
This is the lowest point in Samson's life.
Here is Samson shake led, gouge out his eyes and played games with him like an animal.
But God had not left of him.
God comes to us first not the other way around.
God will continue to seek us out and return to us.
Samson's hair started to grow back in verse 22 God had already started to return the power to Samson.
God would rather you be blind than be married to an unbeliever
God was saving Sampson from Delilah.
Is there anything in your life that is so repulsive that God would half to do to you what he is doing to Samson.
God said he would rather you be blind and you members cut off than you go to Hell.
Jesus is no less demanding on our life.
E. vs 23-25 The Philistines are throwing a party and praising Dagon - And they are praising what they think is Dagon’s rule over Yaweh.
So they are getting drunk by now - there hearts are marry.
Lets bring Samson and mock him this man who use to mock us and kill us with a jawbone of an ass.
And now they bring him out between the two pillars - And now who is the Joke on. - Samson is about to have the last joke on them.
These two pillars were statues of Dagon holding up the Philistines temple and their culture.
All these philistines are on the roof of this building
Samson prays to Yahweh while he is there between these pillars.
vs 28 Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.”
This lesser messiah prays for the destruction of his enemies
these are the same enemies that would pluck the beard out of Jesus Christ the greater Messiah
- speaks about the persecution of Jesus Christ - they tortured Jesus like they tortured Samson
And the Greater Messiah prays for the destruction of his enemies.
Read
May these non elect enemies the reprobate never be saved that torture the saints.
vs 29 Samson grasps the two pillars - And shouts out let me die with these philistines.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), .
Their heads were crushed
And his family came and got his body and berried him.
Samson's death brings a great Glory to Yaweh.
Suddenly out of no where a blind impotent defeated man brings down these great philistines
And he who is in the heavens laughs.
Samson simplistically was destroying all of these false Gods and false worshipers in the philistine culture.
comes true again.
It took great faith for his family to go down to Gaza and dig up the body of Samson and bury him.
Lessons to learn
Samson died for the honor of God and for the salvation of his people - Just as Christ did.
Jesus once and for all single handedly defeated all his and our enemies for his covenant people.
The best and strongest Christian will fall if he compromises himself with the pagan culture around him.
Just so someone will like us and respect us even if they don’t respect your religion.
Compromise with Pagan cultures destroys the lives of Christians and it will blind you and destroy many people around you.
A more perfect righteous messianic king is needed if we are going to be saved. - We need a righteous pure omnipotent King - who rule will guarantee success to all that are devoted to him.
We can be a spiritual Samson - We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
I’m not going to cut my hair - I’m not going to go back on my surrendered faith tot he Lord.
If we commit sins and repent God will forgive us - But if we open the door and don't turn from those sins and cut our hair we open ourselves to sever chastening from God.
LET US PRAY.
