Time for the Lord’s Supper

1 Corinthians 11:23–30 KJV 1900
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

I. A Time of Appreciation. VS23-25

1 Corinthians 11:23 KJV 1900
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
I Corinthians
1 Corinthians 11:23 NASB95
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
I
1. Paul wrote this. Paul was not there the night of the “Last Supper” so how did he know what the Lord said?
Galatians 1:11–12 NASB95
11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.
Galatians
a. Paul received his instructions concerning the Lords Supper directly from the Lord Himself.
The same night in which he was betrayed: Elab (The betrayal was a done deal)
Betrayed: To deliver over with a sense of close person involvement. (Judas)
Took bread:
1 Corinthians 11:24 KJV 1900
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
I Corinthians 11:24
1 Corinthians 11:24 NASB95
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Had given thanks: Grateful (Elab thanks for our food) When we take the Lords Supper we are thanking God for His grace that works so well.
He brake it, and said, Take eat: this is my body, which is broken for you:
b. Had given thanks: here is used for the braking of bread, to give thanks for the body of Jesus body was broken.
a. The Lord body beaten with a cat of nine tails, marred with spikes, and a spear, but realty He GAVE His body-scripture tells us none of His bones were broken
John 19:36 NASB95
36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.”
Psalm 34:20 NASB95
20 He keeps all his bones, Not one of them is broken.
Psalms
b. In His body He conquered the world, the flesh, and the devil, and was nailed to a cross for the remission of sins. (The forgiveness of our sin is what it is all about)
b. In His body He conquered the world, the flesh, and the devil, and was nailed to a cross for the remission of sins.
c. Jesus came to this earth, God in the flesh so He could die for the sins of the world.
d. If He had not done this there could be no spiritual nourishment for us in, by or through His person, which the bread at the Lord’s Supper symbolizes.
2. Do this: Do what? Give thanks, break bread, each one of us.
a. Every born again believer can go to the Lords table, give thanks, and break a portion of the bread.
3. In remembrance of me: This does not mean “in memory of me” It’s a recollection, a recalling, bring to mind.
a. What do we bring to mind? What the person, Jesus who came into this world, took our place and shed His blood and paid the price for sin that He never committed.
b. This is something wroth bringing to mind, something worth recalling.
AMP: Do this to call Me [affectionately] to remembrance.
b. This is something wroth bringing to mind, something worth recalling.
1 Corinthians 11:25 KJV 1900
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
1 Corinthians 11:25 NASB95
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
1. After the same manner: Simply means that as with the bread. He took the cup containing the fruit of the vine () and he supped.
a. The cup (its contents) represents the new covenant, the covenant ratified, and sealed by the blood of Jesus.
b. Do ye this: a definite command (if you love me, keep my commandments), Believers should observe the Lord’s supper.
c. As oft as ye drink it” It does not give us specific time, or how often. Elab.
d. In remembrance of me: We should do it, and as often as we do it, it should be done in remembrance of Jesus.
e. We do it do bring to mind what He did for us, and to look forward to His return.

II. A time of Proclamation.

VS 26
1 Corinthians 11:26 KJV 1900
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
1 Corinthians 11:26 NASB95
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
1. Shew: NASB proclaim. The very act of receiving the bread and the cup proclaims that Jesus is coming again.
Acts 4:2 KJV 1900
2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
. Preached: The same Greek word use for the word shew. It is also in ; In each one it means ”to proclaim”.
a. The observance of the Lord’s supper will end when the one that is being remember returns. Until then we are to observe the supper.

III. A time of Examination.

VS 27-30
1 Corinthians 11:27 KJV 1900
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 11:27 NASB95
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
1. Wherefore: Points back to what has just been stated. That the Lord’s Supper, the bread and the cup proclaims the death of Jesus. It is extremely important that we take this very serious.
2. Unworthily: No unbeliever is worthy to partake of the Lord’s Supper; but the warning here is to the spiritual state of the believer.
3. What does it mean to take of the Lord’s Supper unworthily?
NASB “in a unworthy manner”
a. To regard it as if it has no spiritual significance Elab. Is to take unworthily.
b. We all sin, but do you have unconfused sin in your life? Do you have bitterness in your hear against a brother or sister on Christ?
c. I don’t want you to think because you sin that you cannot take of the Lord’s Supper. We all sin. It’s not up to me to judge you or to tell you if you can or cannot take of the Lord’s Supper (remember it is for believers)
d. But as a pastor I need to warn you of how serious the Lord takes this matter if you take of it in an unworthy manner.
Shall be guilty of the body of Christ: Means to be held liable, it is sinning against the Body of the Lord. This is dangerous.
e. All believers should take time and have a heart-searching examination when taking of the Lord’s Supper.
1 Corinthians 11:28 KJV 1900
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
1 Corinthians 11:28 NASB95
28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1. Examine: To prove.
a. This verse is not just talking about men. Man: Mankind, the human race.
b. Each one of us needs search our hearts under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Elab what this means and what the Holy Spirit will show. (The truth)
c. If we have any unconfused sin we need to confess it.
1 John 1:9 KJV 1900
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
I Corinthians
1 Corinthians 11:29 KJV 1900
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
1 Corinthians 11:29 NASB95
29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.
1. Damnation: Here it means discipline, or chastising by the Lord. This means you will be judged, chastened, and disciplined by the Lord.
2. Not discerning the Lord’s body: What Paul is saying here is for a believer to fail to recognize what the bread and the cup really represent is to fail in the meaning of the Lord’s Supper and to eat it unworthily.
a. Elab on how some may take of the Lord’s supper.
1 Corinthians 11:30 KJV 1900
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
1 Corinthians 11:30 NASB95
30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.
Weak: Strengthless/ not only physically but spiritually. Elab
Sickly: Persisting illness, one that will not go away.
Sleep: It is not talking about taking a nap. It means death. This meaning of the word sleep in used only four times in the N.T. it always refers to the death of a believer.
1. Does this mean that everyone (Believer) that is weak, or sick, or that dies has taken the Lords Supper unworthily? No, but take note of a word used twice in this verse. “Many”
Many: First; great amount.
Many: Sufficient (enough to prove how serious it is)
2. There people that will say I have sin, I have taken of the Lord’s Supper unworthily nothing bad has happened. Will maybe it’s because that person is not saved. Elab
Conclusion:
First do you know for sure that you are saved? Are you 100% sure? Do you have unconfused sin? You may need to go to someone and get things rights.
