Show me Your Glory
Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
Show me Your Glory
Majesty shines about You
I can't go on without You, LordIntroduction
Years ago the popular Christian group Third day preformed a song that has come to my mind over and over again in the last week. it was titled “Show me your glory.”
The first stanza and chorus says:
I caught a glimpse of Your splendor
In the corner of my eye
The most beautiful thing I've ever seen
And it was like a flash of lightning
Reflected off the sky
And I know I'll never be the same
Show me Your Glory
Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
Show me Your Glory
Majesty shines about You
I can't go on without You, Lord
My, oh my, have you ever wondered what it would be like to see the face of God and to walk so close to Him that we would never be the same..????
I think of D.L. Moody who prayed in New York City one evening, Lord touch me with your presence and the Lord show up so mightily that Moody had to ask God to stop for he was afraid He would die in the presence of the Lord that day.
Wow...
Why do I share both of these with you my friends, I share them with you to remind us that we should have a hunger and thirst for God that is unquenchable.
To see Him in all things is our desire… wow. =
So lets pursue that thought, and with it lets run over to the Old Testament book of Exodus,
Show me Your Glory
Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
Show me Your Glory
Majesty shines about You
I can't go on without You, Lord
Exodus chapter 33, verses 17-23
The story here is Moses, the children if Israel have fled Egypt and now are in the wilderness and God has led them to Mount Sinai. And God has called Moses up upon the Mountain,( just a side note...no one else is allowed to even step upon the mountain or touch it, it is holy to the Lord.)
But the Lord has called Moses up upon the Mountain and soon the Lord will give him the Ten commandments.. But for now, Moses is in His presence, and Moses will ask something special of God..
Lets look at our text and examine this story...
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

A wonderful passage.... You see the heart of a servant who loves the Lord God with his whole heart. But you also see a shepherd as well who loves his people and intercedes for them
So lets begin with this thought today, a special conversation...
1. A Special Conversation....
1. A Special Conversation....
Now I begin with this thought of a special conversation because this is just one of many times that Moses pleads for the welfare of his people Israel, in spite of their sin.
So what are we talking about?
If you go back in the text you see the children of Israel have come to mount Sinai, the mountain of God and here they have set up their camp. And it is here that God will ratify the covenant with his people again, reminding them of the covenant He entered into and promised to Abraham.
We
Now it is during this time that God calls Moses up in the mountain, and it is during this extended time that the people are uneasy about Moses being gone so long, well the unthinkable happens..
1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
They come together and get Aaron to build them a golden calf to worship. the people fall into sin and idol worship...
They come together and get Aaron to build them a golden calf to worship. the people fall into sin and idol worship...
Now if there is one thing God hates it is sin, and the people here have fallen into idol worship. And the Lord’s anger is burning against them and He intends to punish them.
And there is where that special conversation begins, Moses begins to intercede for the children of Israel, his own people. And it is here that you understand why God chose and prepared Moses, God had placed inside of him a shepherds heart.
Now Moses comes down the mountain and his horrified at what he sees, so much so that he breaks the tablets of the law at the foot of the mountain, and Moses brings punishment upon the people and the Lord send s plague among them… Understand sin must be punished and it must be atoned for....
And as the Lord continues to speak to Moses after this event, God says he will not go before them any longer since they are a stiff necked people. He will send His angel to lead them...
And Moses intercedes again, and God says I will go with you… and Moses intercedes again and look with them at verses 14-16
11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
14 And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”
Moses is interceding that the Lord’s presence go with all the people, not just him.
In fact let it be a reminder to the whole world so that they are distinct… Moses loves his people and is bold in interceding to god on their behalf...
Now it is int eh midst of this conversation that we see two things… Verse 17 says it all...
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
God says I will do what you have asked…
Now think about this, God says - You have found favor in my sight… Their relationship is so deep that it opens up a new day for the children of Israel. To have found favor says God is pleased with him. Moses is a successful mediator between Israel and the Lord their God.
And then this last phrase… know you by name....
I know you by name....
The word Know is the Hebrew word Yada, and it speaks of being in relationship with, more than merely acquainted with someone, it is a powerful relationship,
In fact He says God says I know you by name… oh my friends think of all that God knows,’
In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus spoke of God’s awareness of the needs of man and beast, and in loving kindness He provides for all because He knows all, perfectly and completely
God knew him....
My dear friends God knows you. And why not? He is the creator of all… There was a special conversation there that day.. I am reminded that we have the opportunity to walk and talk with God and live in relationship with Him
George Muller, says ..I live in a spirit of prayer, I pray as I walk about, when I lie down and when I rise up, and the answers are always coming…
Do you live in a spirit of prayer that you can see, hear and know that you are walking in a special conversation with the Lord all day long!
Now lets move on to a second thought today....
2. A Special Request....
2. A Special Request....
As Moses talked with God that day, I believe Moses understood a little more each day of just how close He walked with the Father…
They had a special relationship....
tells us of his walk with God
11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
- “Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend...”
As a man speaks to a friend… how special, how wonderful that God loves humanity enough to speak to them… and for Moses it was face to face.
And on this day, Moses asks something unique of God the Father. Look with me again at the text…verse 18
18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
Wow, can you imagine....
Friends that is a request.... But why did he ask that? He had seen God so many times and in so many things...
He meet God at the Burning Bush on the back side of the desert, , in the Cloud that shielded them during the day, the Pillar of Fire by night…
And even as he entered the clouds on the mountain.
Indeed I think Moses has seen the glory of God several times, but here he is asking for more...
Listen again to this request..... Please show me your glory… show me your presence that I might know you even more… He is asking that God reveal himself more than He as ever done before....
If you remember back in verse 13, He has asked god to show him his ways, that he might find favor in His sight and now, in verse 18; Moses has asked for more...
What does Moses truly desire?
He wants to see all of God, listen to Max Lucado, He says this of Moses request, “…he says forget the bank, I want to see Fort Knox…”
The enormity of his request, it is like this idea... the bank reveals a portion of wealth, but Fort Knox continues it all.
Moses wants more than just a glimpse, a pictureof God, Moses desire is to see God fully!
And think of yourself my friends, we gaze at the stars, we try get peaks at rainbows, all of which shows us a portion of God’s glory, but not all of it.
We want to see all of Him.
Don’t you....
Moses has a hunger and thirst for more than then things of God, the ways of God.. all of those are great. But to fully see and know Him.. that is everything.
Show me your glory....
Answer this in your heart.... What are you really hungry for??? What are your thirsty for..
Do you remember Jesus with the woman at the well. She came to get water, but Jesus told her about the water he offered...
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
We settle for the scraps but never look for the source… We settle ofr a sip when the whole well is given to us, We settle for a taste when the banquet table has been prepared for us. Oh my goodness friends, We cant settle for the little when God is prepared to give it all to us, all of Him…
We settle for the scraps but never look for the source… Oh my goodness friends, the scrapes are only a portion, I want all of it.
I want Him.. Don’t you?
Then what are you doing in your life that reflects that… and what are you doing in your life that reflects of you…?
Show me your glory!
Now just one last thought my friends…
3. A Special Place Reserved for Him...
3. A Special Place Reserved for Him...
One of the best points I see in our text today is that God never attempts to put Moses off… He hears his request and answers it.
And its a favorable answer, but there are some conditions to his request, conditions to protect and save Moses.
Lets look at our text...
18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
Man, to be honest, it is pretty incredible. God will allow Moses to see a portion of himself and his glory, for Moses cannot see the face of God and live, no man can because we are mortal, flesh and bones...
-33
3 things God says will happen....
A. He would allow His goodness to pass before Moses...
Look back at verse 19...
19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
Allow my goodness to pass before you...
The phrase the goodness of God, these are the very attributes of God, He would in a sense see the very best of God, the splendor of Him without seeing His face. The best that man could see or know and live.
Now I say this because the Bible tells that Moses will be hidden in God’s hand, so what he is allowed to witness is something more than sight could ever comprehend, it was truly amazing… All that He was Moses would understand for sure in that moment
And then there is this phrase verse 19b “...And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”
This phrase really addresses the wonderful nature of the relationship God has with Moses, God would allow Moses, to witness this… it was God’s mercy and compassion, His love for Moses that allowed all of this to take place...
Mercy and Compassion are terms granted to God’s covenant people, You must be in Him to witness the these things...
B. There was a place by me for you, in and on the rock...
place by me for you, on the rock
Look back and see what God says in verse 20-22
20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
He would see God, but partially… we understand this, God places that condition upon Moses, no one can see my face and live.
He would see God
He cannot see him as the angels do, or as the redeemed will in the future at this point, but Moses will be allowed to experience a portion of God at this point in time.
And God makes a promise…There was a place by Him, where he shall stand upon the rock and when His glory passes by, God would cover him with His own hand in the cleft of that rock.
Now there is something special here, the rock and the cleft of the rock, many point to and refer to that as Jesus Christ himself, the second person of the Trinity.
Many of the early church fathers, understood this to mean such… Why...
First off the Old Testament refers to God as the rock of our Salvation.
Psalm 18, verse 2 says
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Just as God would place Moses on the rock, He says He will cover Him in the cleft of the rock, the opening in it and there in the earth covered by God’s own hand He would be safe until He could look upon the back of God.
Jesus was pierced for transgressions, for our sins and His body was laid in the rock of the earth, a tomb cut from stone and there three days God shielded Him until that faithful morning when He Jesus rose from the dead displaying the glory of the Father.
Paul himself says that the rock that followed them in the wilderness, the rock Moses struck the first time and it brought forth water was Jesus
Listen to Paul in I Corinthians 10....
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
How wonderful my friends that there upon the Mountain, Moses was able to witness the Son of the Living God, pre-incarnate, and alive. And in Jesus, Moses was alive and well.
And as God passed by, Moses beheld the glory of God, even if it was limited, he saw His glory, verse 23
23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
Exodus 33:23
Friends, can you imagine with me, the joy of seeing the glory of God .... right now we catch glimpses of it, bits and pieces...
But one day we will see him face to face… how sweet it is...
Exodus 33
1 The Lord said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ 2 I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”
4 When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’ ” 6 Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. 9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
12 Moses said to the Lord, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” 14 And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”
But this morning, let me ask you a few of questions...
1. Do you know Jesus? Have you been born again.
2. What do you desire most?
Do you have a hunger and thirst for God first and above everything else?
3. What are you going to do about that desires, are you asking and pleading with
God to reveal himself in a way like you have never seen or felt before? I
believe if we ask believing, He will honor that request.
If He is not first, … second is not good enough..
1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2 So Aaron said to them, “Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” 6 And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
7 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’ ” 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people. 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you.”
11 But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” 14 And the Lord relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.
15 Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets that were written on both sides; on the front and on the back they were written. 16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.” 18 But he said, “It is not the sound of shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear.” 19 And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses’ anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it.
21 And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought such a great sin upon them?” 22 And Aaron said, “Let not the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24 So I said to them, ‘Let any who have gold take it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”
25 And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27 And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.’ ” 28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell. 29 And Moses said, “Today you have been ordained for the service of the Lord, each one at the cost of his son and of his brother, so that he might bestow a blessing upon you this day.”
30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” 31 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.” 33 But the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book. 34 But now go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you; behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.”
35 Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.
1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
43 After the two days he departed for Galilee. 44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.
46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. 54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
