#34 Jesus teaches with Great Authority

,
Jesus taught in His Home synagogue in Nazareth. The people wanted to kill him. Jesus managed to get away and He headed to Capernaum. In Event #33, We saw that Jesus called 4 fishermen. They quit what they were doing and followed Him. Now Jesus is once again going to teach in the Synagogue now in Capernaum.
Sunday is a busy day for pastors and others in ministry. But Jesus did not got much rest on the Sabbath day. He had important work to get done.
Event 34 seems to be the first Miracle in Mark and the third Miracle over all. Then we have another Miracle in event 35 and then there are many miracles in event 36. I think each of Jesus’s healings and exorcisms counts as Miracles. While I appreciate those that make the lists, I think there are too many to count and many that are not even mentioned.
The Miracles had at least two purposes. One to authenticate His message which includes signs for the Jews. Remember Jews are always seeking signs since Moses at the burning bush. Unfortunately, many Christians seek signs as well. We as Christians operate on faith which is opposite of seeking signs.
Luke 4:33–37 AV
And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
Mark 1:21 AV
And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.
Just like in Nazareth , Jesus went to the Synagogue and was invited to teach. Warren Wiersbie points out “The Jewish synagogues developed during the nation’s exile when the people were in Babylon after the temple had been destroyed. Wherever there were ten Jewish men above the age of twelve, a synagogue could be organized. The synagogue was not a place of sacrifice—that was done at the temple—but of reading the Scriptures, praying and worshiping God. The services were led, not by priests, but by laymen; and the ministry was supervised by a board of elders which was presided over by a “ruler” (). It was customary to ask visiting rabbis to read the Scriptures and teach, which explains why Jesus had such freedom to minister in the synagogues. The Apostle Paul also took advantage of this privilege (; ; ).”
Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 112.
Jesus made it His custom to go to Synagogue even though it was not required under the Law.
I would loved to have heard Him expound the Scriptures. He did not have to read Commentaries and study Bibles like I do. He did need a dictionary, concordance or lexicon. He wrote the book and knows what it all means and how it was supposed to be interpreted and applied.
Mark 1:22 AV
And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
The scribes could only quote what they had read. But Jesus did not have to appeal to any other authority. He was and is the final authority in all things. Uneducated people could tell the difference. The were awe struck by Jesus’s teaching. I would have loved to have been there.
Mark 1:23 AV
And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
There is a lot of evidence of demon activity in those days. William Barclay mentions that in many ancient cemeteries skulls were found that had been what is called trepanned. A hole had been bored into the skull supposedly to let the evil spirit out. They could tell that this was done while the person was still alive. The removed disk was often worn around the neck as an amulet.
Demons according to Jewish belief, could eat and drink and beget children. They were very numerous There were according to some, seven and a half millions of them. every man had ten thousand on his right and ten thousand on his left. ( William Barclay)
There is no telling how long this man had been going to the Synagogue, but it did not seem to bother the unclean spirit until Jesus showed up. This unclean spirit was now in the presence of the one that had the power to cast it into the pit for all of eternity.
In the presence of the Lord Jesus, this spirit had to cry out. This is a picture of a sinner under conviction. At some point , something has to give. people will reject the gospel of Jesus Christ and spend all of eternity in Hell or they will accept the free pardon of sin that God is offering.
Jesus taught with great authority and now he backs it up by casting out demon demonstrating his divine power.
Mark 1:24 AV
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
This demon believed in Jesus but not is saving way.
James 2:9 AV
But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
James 2:19 AV
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
James 2
James 2:9
By calling Jesus "the Holy One of God,"the demon testified to His empowerment by the Holy Spirit—the Enemy of all unclean spirits. This title also probably implies belief in Jesus' deity. The title "Holy One" was a popular designation of God in the Old Testament.Isaiah called God the Holy One about 30 times (; , ; et al.).Whereas people referred to Jesus as "Lord" (7:8), "Teacher" (9:17), "Son of David" (10:47-48), and "Master" (10:52), the demons called Him "the Holy One of God" (1:24), "the Son of God" (3:11) or "the Son of the Most High God" (5:7) (Dr. Constable).
Us is plural, that could mean the spirit and the man or could mean many evil spirits. Just depends on who you read after. Jesus of Nazareth is literally Jesus the Nazarene.
When the spirit asks art thou come to destroy us.
Mark 1:25 AV
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
Jesus did not need a magical formula to exorcize this demon, as other exorcists of His day did. 2 He simply ordered it to be quiet and to leave the man.Jesus probably commanded the demon to "be muzzled" (Gr. phimotheti, "Shut your mouth!"3)
Jesus' authority over demons showed that He had power as God's Servant to destroy the devil and his agents.
Mark 1:26 AV
And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
Mark 1:27 AV
And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
The "authority" that the crowd referred to was probably prophetic authority. 3 Jesus spoke and did miracles like one of the former prophets. His "new teaching" was new in that prophetic authority marked His teaching, in contrast to the teaching of the inferior teachers of His day—and even the authorized rabbis. It was new in quality, not in time.
This incident highlights the authority of Jesus that the worshippers in Capernaum first observed in His teaching, and then witnessed in His exorcism. The people should have concluded that only a great prophet of Yahweh could possess such authority.Jesus did not reveal who He was completely on this occasion, but He did give these practicing Jews enough revelation about Himself so they should have accepted it and asked for more.
Mark 1:28 AV
And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
Jesus did not do these things for fame or fortune. He was on a mission from God to preach the Gospel and then later to suffer and die on the cross for the sins of the whole world.

#35 Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother in Law

,
Matthew 8:14–17 AV
And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Luke 4:38–41 AV
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Mark 1:29 AV
And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
There are some Jewish custom that we still follow today. This is one of them. You get out of church, eat lunch and take a nap. Sounds like a day of rest. But not for Jesus.
Mark 1:30 AV
But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
Anon =Archaic word that means immediately (Holman Bible dictionary)
i. “Peter’s mother-in-law was suffering from what the Talmud called ‘a burning fever.’ It was, and still is, very prevalent in that particular part of Galilee. The Talmud actually lays down the methods of dealing with it. A knife made wholly of iron was tied by a braid of hair to a thorn bush. On successive days there was repeated, first, Exo_3:2-3; second Exo_3:4; and finally Exo_3:5. Then a certain magical formula was pronounced, and thus the cure was supposed to be achieved. Jesus completely disregarded all the paraphernalia of popular magic, and with a gesture and a word of unique authority and power, he healed the woman.” (Barclay)
This account is full of detail, and it must have come to Mark through Peter, who had a special interest in this healing.Evidently "Simon and Andrew"shared this "house"with "Simon's mother-in-law"and perhaps other family members.Jesus' power resulted in instantaneous and complete recovery. The fact that Peter had a family helps us appreciate the sacrifice he made to follow Jesus. The result of this woman's healing was that she served. (Constable).
Mark 1:31 AV
And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
c. And she served them: Peter’s mother-in-law responds the way we should when Jesus blesses us. She immediately served Jesus out of gratitude.
She was healed of a fever and wanted to serve Jesus. Jesus saved us from eternity in Hell but we are too busy to serve Him.
In my opinion worship is service and obedience to God. we are commanded by Jesus to go into all the world but most wont even go to nest door neighbor.
Matthew 28:18–20 AV
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 28:18-20
Mark 1:32 AV
And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
The Jewish Sabath is from sunset to sunset. So at sun set the Sabbath was over and the people could now bring all of their sick to Jesus.
Mark 1:33 AV
And all the city was gathered together at the door.
Some say the population of Capernaum was around 1500 people in that time. So there was a lot of healing going on and it was a very late night for Jesus.
Mark 1:34 AV
And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.
Why would Jesus do this? Because of His love and compassion.
John 3:16 AV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

#36 Jesus Preaches Throughout Galilee

Mark 1:35-39, Matthew 4:23-25,
Matthew 11:28–30 AV
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30
Luke 4:42–44 AV
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
Jesus was up late healing all of these people and he never turned any one away .
Mark 1:35 AV
And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
Sleep is very important but it was more important for Jesus to nourish His Spirit rather than His physical body. I am afraid we are just the opposite putting our physical needs way ahead of our spiritual needs.
Just think, if Jesus needed to pray how much more do we?
ii. “Woe unto that man whose devotion is observed by everybody, and who never offers a secret supplication. Secret prayer is the secret of prayer, the soul of prayer, the seal of prayer, the strength of prayer. If you do not pray alone, you do not pray at all. I care not whether you pray in the street, or in the church, or in the barrack-room, or in the cathedral; but your heart must speak with God in secret, or you have not prayed.” (Spurgeon) via David Guzik.
Mark 1:36 AV
And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.
Mark 1:37 AV
And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
Mark 1:38 AV
And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.
Jesus had to preach through all of Galilee. Everyone needed to hear the Gospel
2 Peter 3:9 AV
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Mark 1:39 AV
And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.
devils =demons. There is only one devil which is Satan.
