from Resurrection to Ascension
from Resurrection to Ascension

we talk about the crucifixion, the resurrection, but not much is usually taught about much after that
we talk about the crucifixion, the resurrection, but not much is usually taught about much after that
sometimes we forget that between the ressurection and the ascension of Jesus was a period of 50 days; 40 of which Jesus spent on earth appearing to his disciples, teaching them, preparing them.
you think about the time between passover and pentecost being 50 days; why it was called the feast of weeks; of seven days; seven times seven is 49
every good jew would be there in Jerusalem for three feasts; Passover, Pentecost and the Feast of Tabernacles which would be about our October;
remember the resurrection was about 3-4 days after passover ; passover was followed by the feast of unleavened bread the days between his resurection and the feast of pentecost Jesus
these are the days that we will be speaking about where Jesus trained his disciples for the greatest gospel outpouring the day of Pentecost; we know that Jesus appeared to Mary somewhere in there, that Peter went fishing somewhere in there, that Thomas doubted somewhere in there, but how does that all fit together
as we wrap our minds around the fact that Jesus rose from the grave early Sunday Morning to Jesus ascending into heaven from the Mt of Olives how does that all fit
walk us through how does that fit; as well as make some practical applications
a reason that Jesus is affirming and confirming
one of the most repetitive words in this period is the words doubt; did you know that
do you know that it is possible even for people that have seen and experienced the resurrected Christ to doubt; that gives me hope. to know that even first century believers struggled with doubt as they did not fully understand the plan, and all that was unfolding
so lets take a look at it tonight
we are going to a number of scriptures
lets start in
I am going to give you 12 ; a good general chronology of what Jesus did
First Appearance (Mary Magdalene) John 20:11-18
First Appearance (Mary Magdalene) John 20:11-18
But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
what already has happened?
the women have come , they have left, they are going back to tell the disciples; the angel told them that he is risen, John and Peter have run to the grave, Mary is there, she is weeping
And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
this is the first appearance of Jesus after he appears
the first person that sees him does not recognize him
which tells me that the resurrected body did not entirely look like the first, and understand that the last time they saw jesus he was a mess
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
something about how he said her name that she recognized HIm; something about the look, the word, the tone, something that resognated with her
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
the very first time, he appeared to anybody he appeared to Mary Magdalene
Second Appearance (The Women) Matt 28:6-10
Second Appearance (The Women) Matt 28:6-10
lets now go to
lets piece this together
the same day
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
watch what the women do in verse 8
And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
so now jesus has already appeared to mary magdalene at the grave, the women have gone to tell the disciples, jesus appears to them and says all hail, they come and hold him by the feet and worship him
Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
matt
why does Jesus keep on referencing Galilee?
Remember the disciples have come down to the passover to Jerusalem like all good jews to celebrate the feast
after the feast all pilgrims go home
where are the disciples from? all of the disciples with the exception of Judas are from Galilee
so they are going to go home, so Jesus tells them he is going to meet them back to where the ministry took place, where the majority of the miracles and teaching took place, I am going to meet you at Galilee
so two times now in the arly morning he has appeared
to mary magdalene at the grave
to the women who were on the way from the grave close to jerusalem back to where the disciples are meeting who are meeting in fear
they think hope is lost, their leader may have been a charlatan, they have been tricked, they may be fearing repurcussions against them as the spirit of the people was to kill their leader; what will they do to them?
so now Jesus appears to these women and they are excited; and he has given them more information
this all happens early Sunday Morning probably before anyone is awake
so what is the third appearance of Jesus?
look at Luk 24
Fourth Appearance (The Emmaus Disciples) :13-27
Fourth Appearance (The Emmaus Disciples) :13-27
we are going to skip ahead a few hours
this is the fourth appearance; but will be the third one that we will see and we will understand why there is one in between
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
about 12 km; about 7 miles you could walk from Jerusalem to Emaaus; almost all downhill from Jerusalem to emmaus
who are they? who are these disciples
And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
a third traveler joins them; it is Jesus, jesus appears to them, they do not know yet that it is Jesus, and he is going to walk with them this entire time
how long does it take to walk 7 miles? maybe 2-3 hours; and he is joining them on this journey and having this extended conversation with these two on this Sunday afternoon and talking with them about that has been going on
so who are these two disciples?
And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
so who is cleopas; well he is one of the disciples of the Lord
well who is the second? Well I believe it is Cleopas wife; her name is Mary
in the bible says there are four women standing at the foot of the cross; mary the mother of Jesus, Mary’s sister who is unnammed, and then it says Mary the wife of cleopas, and then it says Mary Magdalene; so there are four that are listed there
so I believe that this is cleopas and his wife walking home or walking to a nearby place
we know sometimes women are called disciples
but it could be someone else, but we know it is cleopas and we know cleopas’s wife was at the cross during the crucifixion just a few days before
now what does Jesus do?
Jesus teaches these two disciples on the road to Emmaus exactly what the scripture says about what would happen to the Messiah
beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expounded the scriptures all the things concerning himself
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
I would imagine that on this road to Emaaus Jesus talked about isa 40, a good time on isa 53, possibly explained psa 22, possibly psa 69. Brusing the head of Satan in , and so what did Jesus do?
he went to the old testament; I can picture him explaining the passsover lamb in exodus, the scape goat in Leviticus, i can picture him talking about the brazen serpent in numbers, I can picture him talking about all the typology, all the ot references, all of what the bible says about the christ
in fact he said you are foolish, you should have known this, why are ye amazed, the scriptures well predicted that this would happen, why do you think you missed something, you did not miss anything if you had just paid attention to the scripture you would know
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
when they arrived at their home at Emmaus he made as he would go on further
bu they invited him into their home, and said no you walked with us, you taught us come in and eat with us
when jesus ate bread with them their eyes were open; and immediately they knew this was the resurrected Christ
so there is no doubt the bible states it plainly and they now knew it emphatically, that three times at least on the very first day
witnesses, and corraboration
Mary Magdalene, then the women together, then two people who have spent 2-3 hours with jesus
all independent three different sources
and now lets look at the third appearance christ had made; the fourth one that we will look at but the third one in chronology
Third Appearance (Simon Peter) Luke 24:33-34
Third Appearance (Simon Peter) Luke 24:33-34
look at again and look at verse 33
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
think about this they walk for about 7 miles, the whole time they are walking they are being taught, they arrive at their destination, they eat; as soon as they eat they realize this is Jesus!
so what do they do?
They leave and go back to Jerusalem, they just came from Jerusalem, so now they are going to walk up hill , so this is a long day for them
they have walked 7 miles down hill and get home; probably about mid afternoon, they now get back on the road walking uphill; but probably no doubt excited, and three hours back so they arrive probably about evening time
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
now when the bible says the 11 ; understand that Thomas was not there, there were ten there, but understand when the bible refers to the 11 that is what they were called or the name of their group; like they were called the 12 but now Judas is dead so they are called the 11
so what do they know, what do these disciples know now?
They have not seen the Lord
but what do they know?
they know that Mary Magdalene has seen the Lord, they know that the women have seen the Lord, they know that Peter and John have gone to the tomb and it is empty
now these two disciples arrive; Cleopas and possibly his wife and watch what they say in vs 34
Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
luk
now how do they know that?
Jesus must have told them.
what does that mean?
Well that means Jesus must have appeared to Simon Peter before he appeared to them
so now we are beginning to get a chronology arent we
so he appeared to Mary Magdalene, he appeared to the women, he appeared to Simon Peter
now let me ask you a question; why would Jesus single out Simon to appear unto him by himself, why?
well remember what peter said in the upper room
I will not deny you
and remember what jesus said, yes you will and then he said this but peter i am praying for you individually and peter when you come to your senses, when you get it, when your converted, then I want you to be a catalyst in helping other people have faith; “strengthen the brethren”
so I believe Jesus is going back to Simon saying Simon I know you denied me three times, im here to confirm you, to confront you individually, to remind you , to love you
I think it was a very sweet and personal time where the Lord said Simon I have not forsaken you, I love you
because the last time Peter saw jesus, jesus was being led through the courtyard and their eyes met and the cock crowed, so you can only imagine the guyilt that Peter had been feeling
so do we have the picture?
Mary Magdalene, the women, Simon, the two disciples on the road to Emmaus; that is four
so who is the fifth one?
Fifth Appearance (The Eleven) Luke 24:35-49
Fifth Appearance (The Eleven) Luke 24:35-49
the fifth one is right here
because the bible says that the two disciples get there, they are probably out of breath, there famished because they walked up hill 7 miles
and watch what happened in vs 35
And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
as they were telling the story; at that very moment, Jesus stood in the midst of them
He must have not taken 410 or I 10 in to the meeting; because he hit no traffic!
the bible says all of a sudden as they are telling the story Jesus now appears to his own disciples
and watch what he says
“Peace be unto you.”
sure because they are probably scared to death
But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
l
see how he is corroborating, he says; listen this will settle you, I am not a ghost, touch me
I am not a ghost, see my hands, see my feet, it is I myself, handle me
do you think this made an impression on them, you better believe it
because John in 1 john chapter 1 when he talked about who Jesus was, he said whom are hands have handled, let me tell you one reason why I know Jesus Christ is not an illusion, let me tell you one reason Jesus Christ is exactly who he claimed to be; because after he rose from the dead I touched him, i handled him
Colossians- Paul dealt with people saying Jesus was not the messiah the spirit just came upon him, because all flesh is evil, no that is not what the bible is teaching the bible is teaching that God became flesh, the incarnation
that is why it is cnetral to our faith, that we believe at huisache baptist church that we believe in the bodily resurrection
well why is that important?
well that is important because; one day we are going to die, it is important because there is hope for us one day to be ressurected
there is hope for our body to made new
because our hopes are wrapped up in him
and so the bodily ressurection, the bodily ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ is absolutely imperative to our faith and wer finding it right here in
So Mary Magdalene, the women, Simon Peter, the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, the eleven
but who is not there?
Thomas!
Remember that it was Thomas that already expressed doubt several days before
because now it is sunday, but remember it was Thomas who on Thursday ; when Jesus said hey guys
im going to heaven
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John
going to my fathers house, dont be troubled, you know where I am going
ye believe in God believe in me
remember what Thomas said
Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
thomas was a questioner, a vetter of information, not going to take things at surface glance
Lord I must have must missed something I dont know
Jesus Said
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
THomas still doubts, that is his besetting sin
the 11 now, this group, Mary Magdalene, the women, SImon Peter, the two disciples from Emmaus, the other disciples they are all telling THomas; THomas trust me; Mary is saying I saw Him, the women are saying we saw him, the two disciples are saying we saw him, Peter is saying I saw him all by myself, the other 11 are saying we saw him
but he will not
look at what also they already had
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
while Jesus had appeared to them that evening of that Sunday
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
so not onl
but now they also understand the scriptures
can you picture them that week with Thomas
they tried
thomas! its right here, read it for yourself, it is written right here, here is what it says, and we saw it
but thomas is not believing eye witness accounts, thomas is not beliving the scruiptures that are being explained to him
and guess how long Thomas deals with this, a week
He is plagued a week by these doubts
and guess what happens
One week later Jesus appears to the exact same group
so let’s go there
Sixth Appearance (Thomas) :26-29
Sixth Appearance (Thomas) :26-29
watch what happens in verse 26
Thomas is there 24
the other disciples say we have seen Him
vs 25 Thomas says I want to touch him myself; I will believe it when I see it
have you ever dealt with someone like that or is that you?
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
this time thomas is there
same thing; he comes in, there is no door; doors locked, windows closed
he is more than just a human being; but he is going to tell thomas you can touch me so he is a body
figure that out, how does that work
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
if you ever are witnessing to a Mormon or a Jehovah witness
both of whom deny what we call the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ take them to this verse
Jesus you are the Lord of me and you are the God of me
If jesus was not God, he would have said, wait a minute, Im not God
no he never refused worship, he didnt refuse the identity that thomas rightly gave to him
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
that was the sixth appearance of Jesus Christ
The Next Six Appearances
The Next Six Appearances
the last few I am going to just give to you for sake of time
But all of these happen within the first week
All of these happen in Jerusalem, all of them
now what is going to happen
so this will help you as you read your bible so that it makes sense
Now Jesus is going to appear to them 90 miles away
NOw Jesus is going to appear to them in Galilee
Rember what jesus said to them in and in
he said to them go to galille; go back home; but they had to wait for the end of the feast of the unleavened bread; but now they are going to go back home for a season and come back for pentecost
he is going to be teaching them by their old familiar places, by the sea, where I called you
in Galilee here is the order
Seventh Appearance (Sea of Galilee)
Seventh Appearance (Sea of Galilee)
jesus appeared to them a seventh time in galille
he appeared not to twelve, or eleven, but to seven of them
peter, nathaniel, thomas, the sons of zebedee; james and john and two others
what is peter ; going fishing
we know the story
lovest thoue me more than these x 3
feed my sheep, feed my sheep, feed my lambs
remember that? that was number 7
Number 8; what happened; here is where I get a little fuzzy on what happened and in what order
not claiming to know this
Eighth Appearance (500 Brethren at Once)
Eighth Appearance (500 Brethren at Once)
somewhere up here Jesus appeared to 500 people in one time
could not have been a village; you could not fit that many people together in a synagogue
it would have had to been one of the places that Jesus preached to the multitudes
like the mt of beautitudes, the place where he fed the 5000
How do we know that?
Paul told us in
After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
many of whom are still alive; you can go ask them
Ninth Appearance (James) 1 Cor 15:7
Ninth Appearance (James) 1 Cor 15:7
I thought you said that he already appeared unto James and John
no, different james
when jesus appeared to James
After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
when he appeared to James, he appeared to James the Lord’s brother
who is James the Lord’s brother?
James the Lords brother was the first pastor of the church at jerusalem
remember acts 15
he is the one that wrote the book of james in the bible
james was the next oldest child of joseph and mary
somebody that didnt believe on jesus the entire time he was alive
when did james believe on Jesus?
RIGHT THEN
jesus appeared to james and it was then that james realized; i was wrong my whole life about somebody I lived with, i didnt believe on him
i wonder how many people in christian church’s that are so close to Jesus and their knowledge of him, but never believed on him
that was 9
lets look at 10; again may not be in exact order
Tenth Appearance (Unrecorded Appearances)
Tenth Appearance (Unrecorded Appearances)
To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
Jesus appeared a number of times
by many proofs
do you know what that tells me?
That tells me that Jesus appeared a number of times to his disciples
would it be daily? Maybe
Would he meet them at random places and teach them?
Yes that seems to be what the bible is teaching
“he showed himslef alive…by many proofs”
he is teaching them and instructing them
here is what we do know
in john 20:30
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
many things about the ministry of Jesus; many he things he did, many miracles he did, many signs he did, that we will never know until we get to heaven, that were never recorded in the bible
so what do we know?
during this 40 days; jesus is training, teaching, confirming, giving faith to, a people that are needing to be strong who are going to change the world with the gospel message
Eleventh Appearance (The Great Commission) :16-20
Eleventh Appearance (The Great Commission) :16-20
here is what I am talking about
because I do not believe that , , and or matthew 28 happen at the same time
in fact I believe I can demonstrate to you that happened on that first night when he met the 11 in that room with the Emmaus Disciples
and matt 28 happened somewhere in Galilee
how do we know that? the bible tells us
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
so this was not his ascension
that was not ; that was not Jesus rising into heaven
it was different; you might have been like me; thinking well I was always taught they were all the same story told from different perspectives; they are not
do you think that Jesus had a priority?
you better believe he did
he said five seperate times; go into all the world, preach to everybody
do you think he had a mission?
so the great comission happened in Galilee on a mountain
and then lastly
what was the last time
Twelfth Appearance (Ascension) :6-11
Twelfth Appearance (Ascension) :6-11
the ascension itself
in acts 1 Jesus gets together one last time
all the disciples are thinking, ten days until Pentecost!
we have learned all these truths, Jesus will you at this time restore the kingdom unto us?
is it time for the kingdom? Can we rule and reign yet?
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
jesus said it is not for you to know, I do not even know, it is committed to the father
here is what I do know
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
wait here, holy spirit is going to come, you will be endued with power, and you will be witnesses throughout the whole world
after he talked with them, as they were standing there
from the mt of olives; all the way back to Jerusalem
so they have gone all the way to Galilee; received all of this teaching, they have made the weeks journey back to jerusalem
they are on the mt of olives, in ten days they will have pentecost; they are there early
Jesus rises in front of them and ascends
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
one day Jesus Christ will come again and he will stand on that mountain and that mountain will split in two north to south
and he will walk in the eastern gate
and listen; we will be there with him
and so never think about the ascension and the Resurrection the same way
Jesus was just as busy as ever; from resurrection to ascension; teaching confirming, training, comissioning and saying you have a job to do
