Introduction:
In 1967 one of the most well known and iconic songs was birthed by a group of four hippies from England, the Bettles wrote the song, All you need is love, and the world would be all right
Our culture is obsessed with the iidea of being loved and accepted, but to often we sell ourselves short in order to find love, and we only find heart ache
True love is found in and through the love of Christ
Body:
1 John 2:7–8 ESV
7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
1 John 2
Verse 7-8:
“Beloved” a term used in the new testament that is used for those who are known by God
“Beloved” a term used in the new testament that is used for those who are known by God
John moves from those who he associates as his kids within the faith to a term that describes their association to the giver of light
John says we have become identifiable by the change that has taken place in our lived.
Not a new commandment, but a new commandment
The things that are being declared to the these Ephesian believers is not something new or unheard
If it is new than it might not be true, if it is true than it might not be new
John is declaring to them a message they not only heard from old, but something they have also heard recently
(love the Lord your God)
(Love your neighbor as yourself)
, (Love one another)
a common message, something they have heard probably a thousand times
Why keep repeating something
What is John wanting to convey to his audience
There is a greater revelation that has been revealed through Christ and what it means to love my brother
Paul says this in
Galatians 2:19 NIV
19 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.
Galatians 2:19–20 NIV
19 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Paul understood the law
Paul understood the law
He understood its purpose and he awaited the promise of the Messiah
THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WHO TALK ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, BUT HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THE POWER OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD MOVING IN THEIR LIVES.
though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.” (, NIV)
Paul was changed by the Love of God as revealed through the second person of the trinity
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (, NIV)
He no longer lived for himself, he began to live for others
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (, NIV)
The very people Paul could not stand, were the people God sent paul too
He had to learn how to love these people with the love Christ
c.
It was going to take a work of the Spirit
The darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shinning
It is not excepting anything
The language seems to indicate that the light is growing in its brightness through the Church, as it begins to express and show the love of Christ
As the church begins to reflect Christ to the world, the light or the revelation of God grows brighter and brighter
Love of God does not mean that you will always having that “feeling” of love
Listen to what Jesus said in READ
It doesnt mean
We are to love others as Christ loved us
He left an example of that love
says, we are not to love in word or talk, but in deed and truth
Paul describes this type of love in
The ultimate act of Christian love is serving other in the name of Christ, and loving them with his love
The result, people coming into the kingdom of God
The term servant occurs 109 times in the gospels, in a 101 verses
Christ was trying to get across the idea of becoming a servant and serving those around us so they can experience the love of Christ
Jesus said if you want to be great in the kingdom of God, you must become a servant of all, and if we are to follow his example, then we all need to become servants, and then will become known as his disciples, because of our love for one another.
