Introduction:
Introduction:
-Shaunda reached out and told me her theme “God did it”
-The thing that keep jumping out to me with that title is:
-In 50 years of living through many peaks, valleys, hard times, good times, sleepless nights, and beautiful mornings Shaunda says that through it all she can see that if it had not been for God she would not have made it.
-On Facebook I see people celebrating milestones. 10 year wedding anniversary, 30 birthdays, and college graduation. All of these are wonderful milestone but rarely do you see people slow down enough to hear them say thank you to God for all that he has done.
-There is a story in the NT the helps us a little bit with How Jesus looks at Gratefulness:
11 While He was on the way to Jerusalem, He was passing between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As He entered a village, ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? 18 “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has made you well.”

Observations:
Observation #1: All the Lepers had same needs
Observation #1: All the Lepers had same needs
13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
luke 17:
1. The Plight of the lepers
a. The Plight of the lepers
What things are as individuals are we all in need for?
a. Physical needs-food, clothing, shelter, safety for our families, Success for our children, job security, and health(easy to see)
b. Spiritually needs-redemption, reconciliation, restoration, resurrection, adoption, sanctification, and peace with God(hard to see)
-Essentially we are like these Lepers as individuals all of us are searching for the same things
Observation #2: They all had the same challenge
Observation #2: They all had the same challenge
luke 17:14-
14 When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed.
(v.14) Jesus is testing all of these lepers. Before these lepers could return to a normal life they had to get inspected by the priest, then the priest would say they are now clean, then they could get jobs, return back to the temple, get married all those things that we would call normal. I know that is what all of these lepers long for a sense of normalcy.
application
all of us have been issued a challenge, like these lepers we all desire and long for sense of normalcy or stability.
Our life is a one big spiritual test. All of us have been created by God, so it is his right to test us accordingly.
-Here is the test: is your desire for wordly stability greater than your desire to give God praise and thanksgiving.
Observation #3: One Leper passed but all the others failed
Observation #3: One Leper passed but all the others failed
14 When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. 18 “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has made you well.”
luke 17:
(v.14) On the way to the priest all of the lepers got a corporate blessing. All of them recieved the same thing from God. All of them were cleansed physically from leperousy.
(v.15) “Now one of them” during the corporate praise session on the way to the priest started to think about something he did 4 specific things:
15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan.
luke 17:
a. turned back-repented-he left the crowd to walk by hisself alone.
a. turned back-repented-he left the crowd to walk by hisself alone
b. glorified God with a loud voice-The Spirit of God began to work in his heart and he could not contain his praise
c. He humbled hisself-he got real low around God. He started to realize who’s presence he was in
d. He gave thanks
-Doing these 4 things tell us that this Man put thanking God above wordly security.
“And he was a Samaritan---meaning this person who is not supposed to know me, this person who is not really familiar with a Messiah came back and gives me praise
Conclusion
luke 17:17
17 Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? 18 “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has made you well.”
Jesus speaks
(v.17) “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine; where are they? Now this questioning by Jesus seems strange. He was the one that told them to go and present themselves to the priest. Technically speaking they were being obedient. But these question by Jesus indicate to us that Jesus was testing them. Hear is the test, Here is all of our test:
When God blesses it is more important that you get on with life, or slow down enough to turn back and give him praise?
Listen to Jesus: I swore 10 of yall where healed. Only one of yall felt it was more important to give me glory than return to your normal life.
-You see they all receive the same blessing but for the 9 getting a job, getting married, getting back into a regular life was more important than “Thanking the one that gave them all of these things”
-Definition of ungratefulness-not giving due return or recompense for benefits conferred
-Jesus just gave them something they you can not payback. Sometimes the only thing you can give him for all that he has done is too say “Thank you!!!”
-I am good health(Thank you), My wife is good health(Thank you), My children are safe(Thank you), all of my utilities are paid(Thank you), I have shelter over my head(Thank you), I have been living 50 years(Thank You).
How do you pay God back for all of these things??? YOU CAN’T STOP TRYING!!!
But let me tell you what you can do:
Turn back-Repent-Stop
Give God praise
Humble yourself
Give Thanks
Final Recompense for all that he has done for us:
Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the Family & all the kids are so thankful and happy, but they all get up and leave the table without even cleaning their plates.
True Thanksgiving is more than lip service it is a lifestyle. I am so thankful for what my parents did for me that I live in a constant state of gratitude towards them, that all I want to do is serve them and please them.
