Family Time

Family Time
— We had _____ participants in membership class this morning. We will bring them all into membership together next week following the Baptism service
— The Elders and I are working on a couple of ideas and would like your input...
— What would it be like to back church up an hour? Sunday School at 9 and church at 10? I’m thinking this for summer next year and then maybe just continuing
— Have all of the Sunday Schools meet concurrently. Adults and the three student classes all meet at 10A and come to church at 11AM? Then all of the kiddos 0-99 would be in church every week.
**If you see something, say something. Your Elders Jack Cooper, Tyler Alseth and Tyler Schilperoort want to know what you think about these possible changes.**
— By unanimous vote, the Elder Board made a mid-year budget change. This will not affect our total budget, it’s just moving some dollars around. We will begin supporting Eduardo Gallo, Young Life Lower Valley, Area Director and family at the rate of $300/month until year end. Then we will re-evaluate.
— Giving has been good so far this year. We have seen a drop off with this month. Please continue to be faithful even in these couple of summer months.
Our message today is from . Over the last couple of weeks we have seen with disastrous results when Israel wanted a human king. One they could run to.
We also saw one who attempted to jump ahead of his place. Saul attempted to be King, Prophet and Savior. He did NONE of those and for his ungodly acts was stuck from the line.
Take out your bibles, tablets or smart phones. About 1/3 way through the Old Testament. 1Sam chapter 16.
1 Samuel 16:1 NIV
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
There are some positives in this verse
God was still speaking directly to Samuel…because he was listening
God was willing to deal with Samuel in his mourning. He could have just went ahead and dealt with it in his sovereignty and had Samuel “like it or lump it” — but he didn’t. He gave some space to work things out.

It’s easy to dwell in the past
We have all been in situations where we dwell in the past. Frequently you here… “Well, when so and so was here we always or we never
Sometimes we hold on to things not for the right reasons, its more about us than it is the Kingdom.
In the time and place we had the most influence, our most fruitful ministry, the “best” music, the most people, the best donuts, the best coffee, we always used the pew hymnals and the bibles…we want to return there and live there.
I feel the tug of remembering “the church” were and when I got saved. How connected we were, how much fun we had, the tough times we went through the difficulties we weathered. But I also remember the pain that came with that large church splitting over the most un-godly, un-biblical reasons. How vile and how angry people were.
The triumphs and tragedies, the victories and defeats, the lost relationships we can dwell there.
OR…we can find a new place a new position in “church.”
Back to the verse
1 Samuel 16:1 NIV
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
God is making a change. His change and His way and His timing…
“Samuel get on board, the train is leaving the station”
God says I have rejected Saul…because
He was a disobedient King
He was unruthful
He was hypocritical
He was a King and tried to accept the sacrifice like a Priest. He was out of his lane and paid the price.
So here is the Big Idea...
Obedience is better than sacrifice.
Immediately after Samuel sees God do this thing to Saul he says
1 Samuel 16:2 NIV
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
1 Samuel 16:3 NIV
3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”
1sam2
Samuel is panicking over the possibility that Saul will learn about… He is complaining to God…remember the big idea...obedience is better than sacrifice. God said Go…Go!!!
God did acknowledge that Saul still had choice and could have chosen to kill Samuel, so...
God gave a “cover” if you will to Samuel
“Take a heifer with you and say I have come to sacrifice.” This will NOT be the last time that sacrifice provides a covering for God’s plan.
1 Samuel 16:3 NIV
3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”
“Then invite Jesse…who was Jesse
Jesse was the grandson of Ruth and Boaz. Is it possible that God is injecting the truth, love and benevolence of the Story of Ruth back into this highly charged situation. Of course the passage does say that but I wonder...
Skip now with me down to Verse 8
1 Samuel 16:8 NIV
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”
In just the verse before the LORD provides some insight to Samuel on His selection criteria
“Don’t be impressed by his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not view things the way men do. People look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
The NET Bible Chapter 16

“Don’t be impressed by his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not view things the way men do. People look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

The Lord God kept repeating
“The Lord has not chosen these...” at least 7 times!
1 Samuel 16:8 NIV
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”
1 Samuel 16:11 NIV
11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
1Sam16
1 Sam
Remember the Big Idea...
Remember the Big Idea...
It is better to obey than sacrifice...
Jesse could have lied and said, yup these are all my boys, every one of them. I’m not sure what God would have done. But Jesse made a choice to offer up his youngest son,
1 Samuel 16:12 NIV
12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
1Sam16-12
So he sent for David…and that was it…he was the one...
The Lord God himself chose this one
1 Samuel 16:13 NIV
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
In the generations David’s line would bear the Savior of World, Jesus Christ.
After the anointing of David
In the generations David’s line would bear the Savior of World, Jesus Christ.
1 Samuel 16:14 NIV
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.
“The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul.”
It involves a parting. “The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul.” God left Saul.
God left Saul.
Analytical Bible Expositor: I & II Samuel 1. The Curse Prompting the Assignment (1 Samuel 16:13, 14)

it involves a parting. “The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul.” God left Saul. Saul cannot complain, however, for long before God left him, he had left God and demonstrated it in his lack of worship of God and in his lack of obedience to God. Saul did not care about God. Now God reciprocates by leaving Saul

Saul cannot complain, however, for long before God left him, he had left God and demonstrated it in his lack of worship of God and in his lack of obedience to God.
Saul did not care about God. Now God reciprocates by leaving Saul
Saul got very short sighted and stopped listening to God so God stopped speaking to Saul
Let’s go back again to the big idea…
It is better to obey than sacrifice
“…An evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.”
We need to understand this text as God permitting an evil spirit to trouble Saul.
Analytical Bible Expositor: I & II Samuel 1. The Curse Prompting the Assignment (1 Samuel 16:13, 14)

We need to understand this text as God permitting an evil spirit to trouble Saul. God is not evil and does not have evil spirits in His camp. But He can permit evil spirits to do their work as here with Saul.

God is not evil and does not have evil spirits in His camp.
But He can permit evil spirits to do their work as here with Saul.
Why you ask? Could it happen to me?
Why??? says there indeed is a cause for the evil spirit coming. The cause in this case was Judgement. Saul had it coming for his consistent disobedience of God’s word.
In the Old Testament specifically, The Holy Spirit came and went on God’s people, on God’s enemies.
If you are a New Testament believer in Jesus you are sealed with the Holy Spirit forever. The Spirit will never leave you nor forsake you.
For Saul all of the sacrifice could not make up for the obedience that he missed…it is better to obey than sacrifice.
Several significant things here...
Matthew 1:1 NIV
1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Matt 1
____________________________
In closing I want to return to David, This is our first direct introduction to him. This David will become King David and listed in is directly in the genealogy of Christ. in some 28 generations after David’s appearance Christ will be born as the son of David.
Samuel took the horn of oil this oil from Verse 1. This oil provided the
Samuel took the horn of oil this oil from Verse 1. This oil provided the symbol of transferring power from one generation to another.
Symbol of transferring power from one generation to another. From Samuel to David
He anointed David in front of his brothers to establish David’s rule
AND the Holy Spirit came upon David…purposefully, permanently, and powerfully.
Why make such a big deal about this, about David.
Why make such a big deal about this, about David.
David had the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct…Just like we do.
David fell into sin…in a big, big way with LOT’s of consequences…Just like we do.
Acts 13:22 NIV
22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
David is STILL called a man after His own heart. Just like we are…in spite of who we are and what we have done. We are still His kids, sealed by the Spirit.
Let’s return to the big idea one last time...
It is better to obey than sacrifice...
David is STILL called
Like the rich man you may be asked GIVE everything you have, like the poor woman you may GIVE the widow’s mite. It is counted as righteous with the attitude and motivation that you do it. Are you sacrificing out of obedience or to check a box.
