Brotherly Kindness - The family element
What is brotherly kindness?
brotherly kindness (philadelphia - fil-ad-el-fee’-ah) is affection for a fellow believer in Christ or a Christian; also translated as “brotherly love”
In extra-biblical use this term applied to affection or love for people belonging to a certain “in-group”
This is the “family-like” love we are to have toward our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ; it is exclusive!
“we be brethren” ()
A worldwide brotherhood
Becoming a Christian puts you into a worldwide brotherhood and greatly expands your family ()
Notice, obeying the gospel will require sacrifice on our part but the reward is great!
The sacrifice is worth it
What a joy it is to know that wherever there is a church of Christ there is your family
Those that do the will of God are His family ()
When we vacation we should select a location where there is a faithful body of Christ that we can worship with
We should look forward to meeting with our family at every opportunity
There is a reason God requires us to assemble together weekly!
We should build each other up daily ()
And provoke unto love and to good works ()
We need each other and as such we need brotherly love
Paul instructed the Romans to have brotherly love ()
Peter instructed the elect to have “love of the brethren” (, )
The Hebrews writer sets forth the frequency of brotherly love ()
Brotherly love is learned from God ()
The Thessalonian church practiced brotherly love to the brethren in all of Macedonia ()
This included Philippi and Berea
Paul wanted brotherly love to increase as it must with us today!
Charity - The motivating element
What is charity?
charity (agape) is translated as “love” in the ASV and the meaning is to seek the highest welfare of the recepient
This type of love is self-sacrificing and seeks opportunity to do good to all ()
Love is described in detail in
vaunteth = boast
unseemly = behave dishonorably
This is the highest note in our symphony, an octave higher than when we first began
Love is also part of the fruit of the Spirit ()
Love is from God
One of the attributes of God is love ()
This was shown to us in the giving of Jesus on the cross for our sins ()
God loves the human race ()
God wants everyone to be saved ()
God requires us to love one another ()
Love sets the Christian apart from the world
Love is the “badge of discipleship” ()
We are commanded to love our enemies ()
Such moves us toward spiritual maturity and makes us closer to God ()
This is difficult to do and not practiced by the world
Consider what Christ did for His enemies () and for His friends ()
And for His friends ()
Surely we can pray for our enemies and help them when opportunities arise ()
Above all else we must love God which means keeping His commandments (, , , , )
Jesus loved the Father and did what He said ()
If we continue in Christ’s word we are truly His disciples ()
The first and second great commandments are centered on love

Conclusion
It is no mistake that the final two notes in the beautiful symphony of Christian graces are brotherly kindness (love) and charity (love)
Everything that we do is to be motivated by love for God and for mankind
The Christian is to allow this love to ring out in his or her life such that the world can hear it
Let us take care of one another
Fellowship with one another
Call and talk to one another
Look out for one another
Let us love God with all of our heart, soul and mind
Let us love our neighbor as ourselves ()
