Matthew 5:8 ESV

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

YLT translates pure as clean, both of which are valid translations. Jesus shows here his estimation of cleanliness before God. The man who does good deeds out of less than pure motivation () cannot hope to be accepted in God’s presence (). Yet David also wrote in that a clean heart did not exist in him, that it was yet to be created in him ().

Matthew 23:25–26 ESV

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

Psalm 24:3–4 ESV

3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.

Jesus said “Behold, I have come to do your will o God” and he was said to have set his face like a flint. He had his heart completely oriented toward God, and yet, rather than ascending to the temple of God, he ascended the cross and through his work ripped off the dividing curtain in the temple.
