Intro:

Hebrews 10:19–25 ESV
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Why is it important to regularly gather with others believers?

It is commanded

Hebrews 10:25 ESV
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Collective and corporate worship is a vital part of spiritual life.
We are being warned against falling away from the church.
either outright apostasy
Or falling for the lone wolf christian fallacy
Don’t neglect meeting together.
This is the church. YOU the people.
2 Thessalonians 2:1 ESV
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers,
We agree together to be a local church
2 Th 2:
covenanted together.
We assemble together to live out that lie
It is far more than having your name on the membership roll.

It is beneficial to us.

Hebrews 10:25 ESV
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

comfort

NKJV
Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
NKJV
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
We comfort based on the reality of Christ’s return for us.
This life under the sun is not all there is.
We know there is something after this life.
We long for that.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 ESV
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.

warning

warning
Galatians 6:1 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
Heb 1
In church, we find accountability
We live in relationship with each other and invite righteous rebuke when we need it.
We are to warn them and call them to repentence
When a brother or sister sins, we are to warn them and call them to repentance
Galatians 6:1 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
This scares the world
This in part is why they yell, “don’t judge me!”
Yet biblical accountability is commanded.
God inspired Paul to write this to Timothy
2 Timothy 4:1–5 ESV
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
We hold up the Scriptures, not our standards.
And we NEED this

strengthening

Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
Exhortation
At church, we are to be built up.
That means we had better be building up!
Encouraging to do better.
Encouragement
Explaining how to apply God’s word.

It Benefits the world

We can do more together.
Paul compared us to a body.
1 Corinthians 12:12–20 ESV
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
1 cor 12:12
Sadly, many churches look like a pile of disjointed parts and not like a body knit together as God’s agent, his body, his kingdom, at work in the world.
To reject the value of membership is to deny what God has already established in fact.
If there is a stack of feet here, what good is it?
The idea of a non unified church is like a pile of body parts.
If there is a stack of feet here, what good is it?
We can’t impact the world as Christ designed without being in the body
The gifts are more complete when we pull together.
Not everyone has the same giftedness and talents.
That is a great thing!
We need what each part (MEMBER) supplies.
You have a gift and God’s plan is to use it here to build the body (this church) and impact the world.
