“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
This is a passage used frequently at funerals. It is used as a verse to provide comfort and to remind us that we can choose to be troubled or not to be troubled.
Each believer is responsible for the condition on the spiritual heart.
My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
Proverbs 4:23
Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
Proverbs
Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure;
I am clean and without sin”?
Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure;
I am clean and without sin”?
Proverbs
What are some words that describe “troubled?”
Troubled (tarassetho) means worry; concern, lack of peace; burden; stirred or agitated.
The disciples first received them from Jesus when they were on the brink of horrific failure. Troubled is the same word used in
“Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.”
The next word in this verse is TRUST. The Greek word is pisteuo. It means believe. “Trust God. Trust me,” Jesus is saying.
Jesus is saying, “even though your world is crumbling around you, when everything is crashing down, keep possession of your of your hope when you can’t keep possession of anything else.
In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.
Does this imply that there will be a house for you?
Heaven passages:
Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Hebrews 4:16
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Revelation
Jesus is going away to secure the disciples eternal home.
What does Jesus mean when He says His Father’s house has many rooms?
The abundant amount of rooms in the Father’s house is also an abundant opportunity for souls to be assured they get one.
Jesus was a carpenter; isn’t it fitting that He uses a metaphor here about a home being constructed?
Many rooms has been described in earlier translations as mansions. The Greek term is MONAI which means abide or to remain.
Jesus showing the happiness of heaven. Heaven is a house, a permanent structure, not a tomb, not something made with human hands, but something made with eternal hands built for eternity.
It is built by the Father. It is distinctive. It is durable. Jesus and the disciples did not have homes. They gave up their homes to follow Jesus. How beautiful is it for Jesus to declare that the Father has a room for them?
“If it were not so...” indicates:
Assurance of His Word
Assurance of His Promise
Assurance of His Affection
Jesus does not want His followers to be disappointed.
The design of Jesus going away was to prepare a place. There is an emphasis on preparation. Preparation included Him being our advocate. Preparation included Him making provision. Preparation included Him being our pathway.
Then He moves to the promise of His return.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
This reminds not only His return, ,but the fact that He is near.
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.
Also that He will come again and we will be gathered to Him:
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers,
You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus is implying here that the disciples have previously been told the way; it had been previously revealed. Jesus is willing to make the best of His disciples’ knowledge. He had told them throughout His ministry.
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Where did the disciples think that Jesus was going? Maybe they thought they were going to another town to set up a kingdom. Thomas wasn’t sure. That is an example for you and I, when the Lord tells us something and we don’t understand, we need to ask for clarification.
Their final understanding would not come until the resurrection.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
This is the sixth of the seventh of the “I am” statements. Can you name them?
, The Bread of Life
The Light of the World
The Gate
The Good Shepherd
The resurrection
The Way, the Truth and the Life
The Vine
In this verse, we are reminded of the WAY. What does this mean?
For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
John 1
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
Through Jesus, the WAY is access.
Through Jesus, the way is the gate.
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
John
Through Jesus, there is a new and living way.
Hebrews 10:
by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,
Jesus is the TRUTH.
John
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The WORD became flesh
He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
The ascending and descending on Him. The angels do not ascend and descend on that which is not truth.
Jesus is the life.
John
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
No one comes to the Father except through Jesus.
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
This is the cardinal truth of the Gospel.
If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Remember ?
No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.
No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
