And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2  covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. 3 He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; 4 he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.

10 You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills; 11 they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12 Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches. 13 From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth 15  and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart.

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

16 The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. 17 In them the birds build their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees. 18 The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. 20 You make darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep about. 21 The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. 22 When the sun rises, they steal away and lie down in their dens. 23 Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening.

24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. 26 There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. 29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works, 32 who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke! 33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. 35 Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Introduction

The text from which I read was . The author, though writing far after the events of creation, still sees the remaining beauty and how it reflects the glory of its creator. Hopefully today we may grasp some of that insight, wonder, and praise the psalmist had.

Turn now to .

Genesis, especially its first few chapters, have captured the minds of many scholars and skeptics. That is because the book goes about answering one of man’s most fundamental questions. That is, “where did everything come from?” After all, that is what the word, “Genesis” means, “beginning”. And though we only get to short chapters, a glimpse, of a time where the universe was untouched by sin, they are a rich two chapters. We are by no means going to be able to uncover all of its truths today. For no one in 2000 years of church history, or ever will for that matter. But hopfully, by the will of God we may have our hearts and minds enlightened to this text.

Now let us begin, in the beginning.

1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Did you catch that? “In the beginning, God...”. No other. He alone. Before any things, or anyone else. Before time and space. Before it all, GOD. This first phrase not only sets up the tone of Genesis, but also the tone of the whole Bible. God is the author, focus, and subject of all Scripture.

Think about that next time you read your Bible. In all of it, it is all about God. Even in Books like Ruth where God is not mentioned.

Can you imagine? Can you fathom an Earth without shape, without anything in it? Simply blank. I can not. But it was. So then God speaks. And with His voice creation comes from out of nothing. Can you make something out of nothing? No. But God can.

So then God creates light and separates this light from the darkness to which He names both and calls them good. This begins the pattern we will throughout the chapter; “and there was evening and there was morning the nth day”

So this naturally begs the question, “Are these literal days?”

This question is not new by any means. Those in the early church had often debated over this question. Many ideas have been proposed such as “gap-theory” and “day-age theory”. There are also those how propose that the literature of Genesis is figurative or poetic. Now there is no sense in me boring all of you with all the details of each theory. However they can be summarized as such, “they all deny a consecutive, literal, 7 day creation.”

What I propose to each of you today is this. That days listed here in Genesis are literal days. Why? There are a few reasons.

The Word day in Hebrew, YOM, only ever means, “day” as in a 24-hour period.

????

No where else in Scripture does the word YOM mean anything other than a 24-hour period of time.

The text of by all means wants you to take it as a literal account of the events of creation.

There are no indicators that the author wants us to take this text as non-literal. There are not comparative words or poetic language.

The phrase, “there was evening, and there was morning”.

This denotes a day. Why else would the author mention this phrase if it was not a literal morning and evening?

Let us now continue.

6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

The first day the formless and empty earth was created along with heaven, and day and night.

6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

The second day the “heavens” were created. By “heavens” the author means the sky. We know this because in verse 1 the heavens were already created, 2) the context is about earth, and 3) heaven can also mean the sky.

Also, as we move on, notice the language is moving away from creation out of nothing, to organizing what He has already created.

Verse 9.

9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. Now we are getting into life. Dry land has come forth. The water is divided into seas. And God says something spectacular here. He identifies His creation as “good”.

And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. Now this isn’t “good” in the sense we think of good. We usually use the word comparatively. For instance, one might say “the first Star-wars trilogy was good.” inferring that the others are not good or not as good. Which is a true by the way. What God means by this word, “good” is so much more. It conveys perfection. Something that pleasing to God. This is a good that is wholesome and ideal.

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. What God means by this word, “good” is so much more. It conveys perfection. Something that pleasing to God.

We also have in this text the creation of plants in animals. At this point in the story we do not know why God has created those as the first life. But later on as we will see, God has made the plants as food for what He is going to create next. God is not winging it. He has meticulous planned out the order and design of creation.

Moving on.

And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. Wait. What was that? 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.

Was not the Sun and other light giving constellations already created in v.3? No it was not. Then were did the light come from in verse 3? The text does not explicitly state it but I along with many others have the feeling that this light is being emitted from God Himself. He has been providing the light to sustain the life on Earth.

With the creation of the solar system God has now give the sense of the passing of time. Without our rotation and orbit around the sun, our understanding of time would be quite different or non existent.

Moving on.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

For the fifth day sea creatures and birds of the air are created. Now this flies in staunch opposition to evolution which teaches life most likely began in the sea, moved to land, and then to the air. However we see that the created order is different. Life is first in the sea and air and later as we read, on the ground.

This makes it difficult for theories such as theistic-evolution to hold any ground. For those who do not know, theistic-evolution states that God used the process of evolution to bring about life from the sea to ultimately Adam and Eve. Its proponents desire to rationalize the Biblical account to modern scientific thought.

So it begs the question. Is Genesis a scientific account of creation? No. But that does not mean it is not a literal account of historical events. To understand this we must understand the intent of the author. Moses, who most likely wrote Genesis, is not attempting to give exact detail of creation nor create a scientific text book. Moses, through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is writing a theologically driven account. In other words, Moses has specific points and focuses for His book and they are not scientific but rather theological.

Did you notice something? Who was God speaking to when He was going to create man? The angels? No. The beasts? No. He was speaking to Himself. No the way we do when we are upset or crazy. But it was an inner-trinitarian dialog. It was the three persons of the trinity speaking to each other. This is the first glimpse we have of Godhead.

There is also something else in this passage. Man is the only creation made in God’s image. We are not evolved beasts. We are not simply part of the “great organism of the earth”. We have been in a particular way for a particular purpose. And that purpose is to glorify God in a way the rest of creation can not. As image bearers of God.

Lets keep going in this passage.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

No there is plenty to talk about here but I only want to focus on one phrase, “very good.” We have already discussed the meaning of “good.” But now we encounter this phrase “very good”. In other words, everything is complete. Its just the way he likes it. Creation needs nothing else. It is pure, holy, and clean. It is a whole level above “good”.

This state does not last long.

Application

God is the first, middle, and last actor in His story.

The Seventh Day, God Rests

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and (A)all the host of them. 2 And (B)on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

This whole thing is about Him. From creation to consummation, it is all His and it is all about Him. That should instill in us humility, awe, and wonder. Not only of creation but more so of God Himself.

God has created all things very good.

It is we as humans who used those good things in evil wicked ways. From drugs to music. It was all created by God good. But we take it and make it wicked. Think about how you use the good things God has made. Are you using them or His glory or for illegitimate means? Your money? Your marriage? Your things?

We are not to look down upon our brothers and sisters who view Genesis differently from us.

This is not a matter of salvation. Do not get me wrong. It is important. It is God’s Word. But it is not the most important issue at hand. Tim K---. We are to love our brothers and sisters and hear what they have to say, and engage them scripturally.

All things were very good.

They were. But due to human sinfulness it is not so anymore. The only one good is Jesus Christ. That is why we need Him. To make us good again and make all things new. Repent and believe in Him.
