Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
James has been addressing various issues facing the believers
Hatred stirs up strife,
but love covers all offenses.
When faced with a problem, what do you do first?

Pray?
Do you say, “OMG! What am I going to do?”
Cry? Laugh?
Yell at your spouse? or co-workers?

Scream at your kids?
Go into hiding!
Pray?
When do you think about praying?
When do you think about praying?
When all other efforts have been tried?
When you do pray, how do you see God?
God is a long way off and no connection?
How do you address God?
How do you address God?
As God, but who is a long way off and no connection?
Father

Do you address God as your Heavenly Father with whom you have a deep intimate connection?
The message today is to help you become a righteous person whose prayers accomplishes much!
The message today is to help you become a righteous person whose prayers accomplishes much!
We are going to look in the book of James to find how.
James addresses a number of issues in his letter to those of the twelve tribes scattered abroad in the dispersion due to the persecution.
Those scattered were mostly Jewish Christians, but would have included Gentiles as the Gospel was preached.
Some of the issues James addressed were:
Perseverance under pressure
Wisdom
The Sin of Partiality
Faith Without Works
Taming The Tongue
Prayer: Asking and receiving
Worldliness
Bragging
Warning to the rich about abusing
Suffering
and now
Prayer of faith
Again, the message today is to help you become a righteous person whose prayers accomplishes much!

James addresses the real world we live in:
We have suffering. He said to pray!
We have joyous cheerful times. He said to sing praises!
We have times when we are sick. Get help!
In this passage, the person who is weak or sick, is the one who calls for the elders
James doesn’t specify if it was Olive Oil or not, but
to anoint with oil and pray over them.
“Among the Jews, oil was a common symbol of divine grace, and so it was appropriate to use it as a sign of the Spirit’s power and grace revealed in miraculous healing. It was an extraordinary sign of an extraordinary and miraculous cure.” “An Exposition of the Epistle of James” by Thomas Manton
