Introduction:
John has addressed what are the marks of a true believer
We are to be people of the light
We are to be people who shine the light of truth
This is seen how we love God
How we love each other
This week John touches on how we must separate ourselves from the affections of this world
John is not calling into question their walks or their faithfulness to God
John is not even expressing any dissatisfaction with their spiritual growth
But John is warning these believers against the subtle affections of the world that will captivate our attentions and desires
John brings to our attention of the oldest attacts of our enemy
An attack that finds its roots all the way back to the beginning of time
If you have your bibles turn to 1 Jon 2:15-17

Body:
1 John 2:15–17 NIV
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Do not love the world or anything in it
The Greek word here is kosmos
When the NT writers use this word, they use it in a way that speaks about the philosophies, values, morals, or attitudes that disregard the Nature and values God desires us to follow
The attitudes of the world, the values of this world is built on something other than on God
This is brought out by the word love
The word is agapao
We talked about how this word is used to express putting others interest above ours, and loving them with the love of God
In a negative way, it is placing the interest of the world above God, and pouring our affections into it
The interest of the world are found on the purposes of doing what is right for me, and therefore my love and my affections, my results, are based upon what I can get out of it.
Paul tells us in , “That know one has ever hated his own flesh, but rather cherishes it and takes care of it.”
The love of the world, the dominating philosophy is the love of self and the promotion of self
“See to it that no one takes you captive through the hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world, rather than on Christ.”
Anyone who loves the world, the love of the Fatehr is not in them
The structure of this sentence on the Greek really sheds some light on this passage
Pinocchio struggles with
Literally, if your affections are for the world, it will be really hard for your to love the Father also
He was quickley n
The bible tells us,
Matthew 6:24 ESV
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Mark 3:25 ESV
25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.
We need to focus our love on the one who first loved us
Verse 16
For everything in the world, lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life---comes not from the Father but from the world.
John describes what this philosophy involves
This is not something new
In fact it is something that finds its roots in the very beginning of time
It also is found in the gospel of John, when Jesus is led away into the wilderness
Food-eyes, throw yourself down-flesh, worship-pride of life--
Each temptation was an appeal to Christ and his flesh, an appeal to place his own self interest over the interest of this humanity, this humanity who has broken God’s love.
Lust of the flesh
natural cravings of the flesh
When we indulge in something, and instead of allowing God to fulfill that desire, we improperly seek to fulfill those desires through sinful ways
Pinocchio
Lust of the eyes
The eyes in themselves are not sinful
However, the eyes the means by which sinful desires are introduced to our minds and our thoughts
Matthew 6:22–23 ESV
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Daniel Akin, a NT theologian said this concerning the lust of the eyes, “Eyes are the windows to our souls, it is the eyes that lead most directly and quickly from external observation to evil thoughts latent in the human heart.”
Jesus made the point, concerning the eyes in , when speaking about looking at a woman with lust in your eyes.
Boastful pride of life
boasting about things we have done or accomplished that this world deems valuable or important
Success
money
relationships
promotions
When we fall into this temptation, we glorify our own accomplishments, and disregard or deny any reliance upon anyone else but ourselves
it leads to a life that alienates others and when everything crumbles, we find ourselves standing alone and everyone else no where to be found
Two factors to think about
One these desires do not come from the Father
Two, these desires will fade away
John encourages his people to not be drawn away by these desires, for these desires will not last
Jesus said in
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (, ESV)
