psalm 51
ps 51
Read Psalm 51
Psalm 51 NKJV
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David When Nathan the Prophet Went to Him, After He Had Gone in to Bathsheba. 1 Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. 16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise. 18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, With burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.
There was a episode of America’s Funnest Home Video’s Where a preschool child was covered with chocolate. The walls around him are covered in chocolate and his baby brother has been smothered in that same chocolate.
With the camera rolling the mother asks her son “Have you been eating Chocolate” the Child shakes his head no.
While that may seem funny even sweet it shows the true nature of Sin and the desire to hide it even when guilt is clear.
David The man after Gods own heart. His chosen His annionted. Sinned when he laid with Bathsheba
David tried to cover his sin first through a act of fraud and lies when that didn't work David Gods chosen Man His Chosen King had Uriah Bathshebas husband killed
Then David came to his senses after a harsh rebuking from Samuel. David admitted his failures
is a road map to restoration showing us how we can come clean , How we can all have a clean start
Appeal to Gods Attributes
There are many times when we fail to approach someone because we fear the response.
David approached God with confidence appealing to
Gods- Love-kindness
Gods tender mercy
Gods Cleansing Power
2. Admit your Sin
After a season of trying to cover up his sin, David comes completely clean with God. Notice the details of his confession
The weight of Sin (vs 3 its all ways before him)
The size of the Sin, He sinned against Uriah against Bathsheba but ultimately against God.
The Source of the Sin, We are born sinners
Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom
The truth about sin , Gods truth and wisdom is the standard His truth must be the foundation
of our heart and soul
Psalm 32:5 NKJV
5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah
3. Ask for Restoration
Davids Heart and life was a complete mess. He truly needed a complete overhaul of his life and soul one that only God could deliver.
Just like a stained glass window are broken pieces of glass made into something beautiful. God takes our mess and creates a masterpiece.
Here are a few elements of Restoration the David requested
*forgiveness (7)
*rejoicing (8)
*a clean heart (10)
*steadfast spirit
renewed intamacy
*Joy of salvation
*willing spirit
1 John 5:4 NKJV
4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
4. Put your new freedom to Action
Why would we request a fresh move of God in our life only to return to our old habits?
A Changed life means changed actions
David now desires to
Point others toward God (vs 13) Changed lives want to change lives
Praise God for the victory
Provide proper sacrifices. ( the best offering one can bring before God is ourselves)
Conclusion
Since the preschooler made the chocolate covered walls carped baby brother. There was no way he would be able to get it all cleaned up on his own.
The only solution to recovering from the mess was to get outside help.
In the same way our Sin cannot be addressed by our own efforts to hide them to cover them up.
Only through the work of God can we ever be made whole.
Go ahead and admit that you been hiding your chocolate. Let God take care of the clean up in your life.
Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 17:14 NKJV
14 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, For You are my praise.
