What a text.

1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

What a text.

Here we see Paul focus on DEATH, LIFE, OUR TRESSPASSIVE AND SIN.

And God grace and power toward us to seat us with him in heaven places now and make us trophies of grace in the age to come

I want to take another text of paul to help us understand this text more

Look at romans 4:13-16

- It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

Faith makes one an heir.

For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless,

because law brings wrath.

And where there is no law there is no transgression.

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham.

He is the father of us all.

Faith makes one an heir.

God makes a promise to man, when man responds in faith, God commits Himself to fulfill His word to that man.

a) A promise was made to Abraham and to his seed.

Verse 13 “heir of the world.”

The promise is always centered in the person of Jesus Christ.

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.

He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “ And to your seed,” that is, Christ.

Those who are the seed of Abraham are children of the promise.

“and if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.

“

You can enter into the same promise of Abraham Isaac and Jacob.

b) Law never gives a promise

1. Law makes faith void (empty) verse 14

2. Law nullifies the promise (to make powerless) v 14

3. Law works wrath (produces) v 15

The Promise did not come to Abraham through the Law.

He lived over 400 years before the Law was given.

The promise that brought him righteousness was received upon the basis of faith alone.

c) A promise is given “according to Grace” v 16

What is grace?

Charis, favor.

Grace indicates that which is freely given without merit upon the part of the receiver.

1. Faith and grace are joined together in “holy Matrimony.”

2. Since the promise is according to grace, it is made “certain to all the decedents.

For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

Justification is a promise to all who believe.

Those who respond in faith receive the benefits of God’s grace.

Now lets look at

romans 4:17-25

Faith that Justifies is faith that believes in God.

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.

Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,

being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone,

but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Faith that Justifies is faith that believes in God.

What is Justification?

Justification deals with lawless.

God himself puts away all they have committed and places them before Him as righteous, all this on the basis of faith.

BLESSED ARE THOSE

7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven,

And whose sins have been covered.

8 “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”

WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED

1. Man has always tried to cover his own sin.

(Achan)

2. Only God can cover sins so there is no remembrance.

3. Coving sins is part of God’s justification.

Happy is a man whose sins are covered.

That means no more guilt or condemnation.

1. Man has always tried to charge someone else with blame for what he has done.

(Adam saying it was the woman you give me.)

2. Jesus Christ took the sin of man upon Himself

3. Therefore man’s sin is not put down to his account.

4. Justification is taking sin from man’s account and putting down God’s righteousness in its place.

Justification is the blessing bestowed by God on the guilty.

David himself stood guilty as an adulterer and murder, the Law offered no forgiveness or sacrifice for these sins.

Only God could release David and cover his sins, only God could take from his account that which was done.

David was that blessed man who experienced the justification of God’s grace.

God speaks words that can only be made possible by bringing life out of death.

V 17 a father nations have I made you.
