Ministry

John 3:22–36 ESV
After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized (for John had not yet been put in prison). Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease.” He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 3:22-
Point in time where Jesus and John are both baptizing
John’s disciples get in a dispute about purification. May mean the connection between baptism and ritual washing. Some how this conversation led to them asking about the decline of the ministry may be (if your argument is right where are the crowds)
Like many churches they were concerned about numbers
John resists the temptation to make his ministry to be all about him. How often would people try to be the center of attention. John had a big ministry and was in the lime light but now Jesus is.
John 3:27 ESV
John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.
All gifts or anointings come from heaven. Think of talents ministers or singers have. God is the source. Stay nervous about your ministry so as to let God in control.
All gifts or anointings come from heaven.
He is the friend of the bride-groom. Not the main attraction. The best man announces the arrival and after that fades in the shadows.
Wedding image best depicts God’s love
Isaiah 62:5 ESV
For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.
Jesus first and second coming are likened to an excited lover to get his bride. This is the church a special love
Back on John: we must increase we must decrease
We are to be “living sacrifices” even our own families are not to be chose above God. Prosperity gospel backwards preaching that God is here to make us happy when really we are here to exalt him and make our lives sacrifical
Its all about Jesus
How many people say “I am not ready” this translates as “I love other things more than God”
We submit ourselves fully to him: the spritual exercises are an example of that
Increasing and decreasing implies increments. Overtime as a Chrisitan there should be the developement of being more “sold out” to God.
When we come for worship we decrease he increases
In our ministries the focus shoule be on him not numbers not us as the superstar
Jealous preachers of other preachers make is about them and not the word.
Saul and David
Churches jealous of other chruches because of our view of success
John 3:21–22 ESV
But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing.
John 3:31–32 ESV
He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.
Just like am a human interpreator of God’s word. I have not been to heaven. I do not have direct revelation from God. I recite from the word. Jesus speaks directly as God “one having authority”
Jesus didn’t quote other rabbis
Quote scripture but that is divine revelation from God
When going against spirits he just commands
We pray in “Jesus name” because authority has been given to us
Name it claim it crowd put the authoritys in their “faith” as if they can force God’s hand. This makes it in their name. When a miracle happens through prayer it is not OUR spritual excercises “fasting, prayer, etc” but God’s work we operate in his name so he gets the glory. Our faith and petition can move his hand but it is as a humble servant asking a mighty king not a demanding child. Imagine that image
Peter said is was not by his righteousness that this man was made whole
Sons of Scevea took uses Paul because they did not have their own relationship with Jesus
John 3:33 ESV
Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
Accepting the words of Jesus confrims what God has spoken
John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Switches from believe to obey. Faith and works. Full dedication to him. Decreasing in our lives and let him increase
