Title- Come To The Table
Passage- & 9:1-13
Attention-
Hellen Keller once said “To be blind is bad, but worse it is to have eyes and not to see”
Introduction
I think that when we come to this passage it could be difficult for many of us to find the relevance of this passage.
We come to a man like this in the scriptures and it can be difficult for many of us to find the relevance of this account.
By all accounts I believe that most of us would not put ourselves into the place of this man…crippled for all but 5 years of his life
Yet it is in the life of this overlooked man that I find some striking similarities to each and every one of us.
There are similarities that we cannot see
The problems are similar
And the solution to the problem is also very similar
What is the main driving point (CPS)?
Friends, just as there was an answer for Mephibosheth’s greatest problem there is an answer to our greatest problem as well
Why does the CPS matter, what is the consequence?
The problem is that many do not realize their greatest problem…not their most glaring or most recent but their greatest problem
Transition
In this passage we find three truths about Mephibosheth…the first truth is that...
I. He had a problem(2 Samuel 4:4)
I. He had a problem(2 Samuel 4:4)
Explain
Was crippled by a fall
We aren’t given a lot of details about the accident but we are left with the reality that Mephibosheth could not walk anymore
What do we know?
-When he was 5 years old his father Jonathan was in a battle and died.
Saul’s last son, Ish-Bosheth, was in charge and defeated and killed.
Ish-Bosheth, was in charge
Without this account one would assume that the throne would have went to David but the reader is reminded of Saul’s grandson Mephibosheth
As a result of the death of Jonathan and King Saul the life of Mephibosheth is in danger and his nurse rushes him away and in the hasty departure Mephibosheth is injured and as a result is crippled for life.
Ish-Bosheth
Bridge to today
I do not want to in any way make light of persons with disabilities...
But what Mephibosheth and others in that time went through had a different set of challenges
He could not work, he had to rely 100% upon others
Personal care
Personal care
Cooking
I am sure there were great difficulties doing many daily tasks
All because of a fall that he was innocent of
He did nothing to cause the need for him to run, that was the choices of others.
He was only 5 years old, innocent of the situation
Innocent of not the reality is that fall left him crippled
Relevance
There could be some practical day to day truth for those dealing with disabilities or difficulties but I see a much more important truth here in this passage
That truth is that like Mephibosheth, we were crippled by a fall that we had no part in.
Back in the garden of Eden…Adan and Eve decided to doubt the goodness of God and trust in themselves.
In
They decided to eat of the fruit of the tree that God had clearly commanded them not to eat of
Why does this matter?
There are consequences for their decision
There was a curse…or often referred to as the fall of mankind
The fall and the curse were not just on Adam and Eve but all mankind
Paul tells us in
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The results of the curse are found in
1- We lost our righteousness
Before the fall mankind was able to fellowship freely with God
2- The loss of righteousness resulted in a separation from God
3- All of creation was cursed
Work became toilsome
Childbirth became sorrowful
The Earth grew thorns and thistles
4- The clothing industry was born!
5- Physical death was a reality to Adam and all of his descendents.
Physically I am pretty healthy this morning, and I have been all of my life so far
But spiritually I came to a moment in my life where I realized that I was affected by a fall
A fall that I was not a part of but I suffered the consequences
This is our greatest problem…
Paul tells us in
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
It maybe not our most recent or most glaring but it is our greatest problem
Transition
But the beautiful truth is what we find in 2 Samuel 9:1-5...
II. There was a solution (2 Samuel 9:1-5)
II. There was a solution (2 Samuel 9:1-5)
Explain
Mephibosheth was sought after by the king
In verse 1 and 5 we read that David is seeking out anyone left from Saul’s family
For what purpose?
Verse 1 again…that I may show him kindness of Jonathan’s sake!
What do we NOT read in verse 1 but is a very real truth
1- David was not required to display this kindness
2- The kindness of David was not earned in any way by Mephibosheth
What could this crippled man do for the King of Israel
Strategically, politically, authoritatively, Mephibosheth was useless to David and there was nothing Mephibosheth could do to change that.
Bridge to today
Bridge to today
Now as we try to bridge this to today I think that when we read verse 5 we can get a picture of God the Father sending God the Son to redeem mankind
Notice the actions
The king sends someone to go and get Mephibosheth for him
Someone with the authority of the king
Left the palace
Traveled to Mephibosheth
And made a way for Mephibosheth to be brought before the king
Relevance
The relevance of this passage to our lives personally is HUGE
As we already saw, we were affected by the decision of Adam and Eve and are now alienated from the presence of God and facing physical death and either an eternity with Him or an eternity separated from Him in hell.
To that we read in
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Paul also says in
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Even while we were unable to love Him God so loved us that he sent His son Jesus Christ to pay the debt for our sin that we could never pay
There was nothing Mephibosheth could due to earn David’s favor
There is nothing we can do to earn God’s
That is why Jesus came and dies…so we could exchange our guilt for his righteousness
Why does this matter?
If there has never been a time that you have come to the realization of your sin…that you are in need of a Saviour…today could be the day of salvation
Just like Adan and Eve we fall short of God’s standard and that is called sin
We must give an account for that sin…unless we have called upon the blood sacrifice of Jesus to forgive us our debt of sin
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
ROmans 10:9-10
It is that simple…admit that you are a sinner, believe that Jesus is who He said He is and died for your sins and ask Him to forgive you.
You can do that now, you can talk to one of us after the service if you have question...
This last truth is exciting enough but it gets better because
Transition
III. There was benefits given to Mephibosheth ()
III. There was benefits given to Mephibosheth ()
Explain
Not only did Mephibosheth recieve the gace and mercy of the king
Mephibosheth also
1- Verse 6…He became a servant
-Now in our culture we would not see this as a big plus but it was much better than being the king’s enemy...
2- Verse 7…he was given peace and security
-David will treat Mephibosheth in the manner He treated Mephibosheth’s father Jonathan
-He will give Mephibosheth back his land
-Mephibosheth would never have to worry about his daily needs again…they will be supplied by the king
3-Verse 11…He became a son to the king
It is as if David adopted him into his family
Bridge to today
Bridge to today
Again…I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful these truths are to the believer today
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
We went from enemies of God facing a future of judgment to being reconciled to God and eating at his table
We are given safety and security…even if it doesn’t seem like it at times we are safer and more secure with God than we would be running our own lives
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Romans
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
We go from being an enemy to being a child of the King of Kings!
Why does this matter?
Why does this matter?
We go from being a beggar to sitting at the kings table continually in spite of our crippledness
Conclusion
Review of the Principles and the Sermon Proposition
Like Mephibosheth…we either have or have had a problem caused by a fall
Some of us here today have realized and accepted the gift that is the remedy to our problem
That is the gift of the forgiveness of our sins offered by Jesus Christ
All you have to do is admit your sin, believe in Jesus, and repent of your sin
Challenge to act now (your part)…immanence
As I mentioned earlier…I want to give you a moment to respond if the Holy Spirit is working in your heart
We are going to close in a moment with a song and if you need to receive Jesus come forward and we will have someone take you to a quiet place and show you from God’s Word how to have your sins forgiven
Visualize Audience Implementation
If you are here this morning and have already accepted Jesus’ free gift of salvation…never forget who’s table you have the privilege to be seated at...
Never forget your lostness and the great grace and mercy that was shown to you by the king
Never forget about others that need the King…be that servant in verse 5 and go and tell others
Final Statement
Come and take your seat next to the Savior
