Intro: God is always the key character in our Bible. David will be our focus this Sunday in his relationship with God. The Bible first introduces David when God calls Samuel to anoint a new king to replace the rejected king by God, Saul. We learn about the qualifications of God’s choosing of David.
1 Samuel 26
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
God chose a king that has heart of worship.
The Lord chose a shepherd to lead his people as king.
David is a worshipper of God and skilled musician.
18 And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing.”
17 “All right,” Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.”
,
18 One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.”
David finds favor with king Saul because of his skill in music to remove the torment from Saul by playing music. Saul was pleased by this...
21 So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer.
God is seeking worshippers...
John 4:
23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
David’s love for God moves him to act.
David’s love for God moves him to act.
David walks in to an event that moves him to honor God and stand up for him.

Israel is being attacked by the Philistines for 40 days.
16 For forty days, every morning and evening, the Philistine champion strutted in front of the Israelite army.
1 samuel 17:
David was only in the area of battle by the assignment of his Father (). David went back and forth to help his father take care of the sheep. One of the days he goes to check on his brothers in the valley of Elah fighting against the Philistines and David discovered...
Goliath taunts Israel
Goliath taunts Israel
20 So David left the sheep with another shepherd and set out early the next morning with the gifts, as Jesse had directed him. He arrived at the camp just as the Israelite army was leaving for the battlefield with shouts and battle cries. 21 Soon the Israelite and Philistine forces stood facing each other, army against army. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies and hurried out to the ranks to greet his brothers. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, came out from the Philistine ranks. Then David heard him shout his usual taunt to the army of Israel.
David is offended by Goliath’s act and is interested in who will stop this man..
26 David asked the soldiers standing nearby, “What will a man get for killing this Philistine and ending his defiance of Israel? Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?”
David is showing sings to fight for Israel with his actions and his words.

Don’t worry
Don’t worry
David is brought before the King because of his show of courage in the ranks.
32 “Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!”
Saul doubts David’s ability because of his youth and lack of fighting experience,
Saul doubts David’s ability because of his youth and lack of fighting experience,
People will doubt you when they think you are not qualified.
They may judge you on your looks.
They can not measure your heart.
They do not know what God has called you to do.
David again points out don’t worry everything is going to be alright.
David again points out don’t worry everything is going to be alright.
34 But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death.
1 Samuel 17:
David shows that his past experiences shows the power of God.
God has kept him before in the face of danger.
God is a protector of his sheep as a good shepherd should.
God did it then he will do it again.
God did it then he will do it again.
36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!
David’s love for God leads him to stand up to honor God’s mighty name and not let Goliath disrespect the Lord his God. David understands Saul’s doubt but knows that Saul is not God. David knows that his faith in God is greater than Saul’s doubt. Because Saul was placing his trust in David, while David is fully trusting in God. So in one way Saul was right in doubting David because David alone is not victorious, but David in the name of the Lord is victorious. Finally Saul agrees with David...
37 The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!”
David’s Worship of God prepares him for battle.
David’s Worship of God prepares him for battle.
Worshiping God for who He is.
He is a conqueror as shown bringing them out of Egypt.
He is God who keeps his covenant.
He is God of unfailing Love.
Worship God reminds you of his power the creator of the universe.
Worship God who will give you victory!
Worship Him For we have the Victory!
Worship Him For we have the Victory!
In our life it seems that some trials last too long and seem like victory is not with in reach. The perspective of this trial also depends on the background of the individual. The background makes up ones experience and therefore from ones past experience are they more familiar with defeat or victory. If defeat is out weighing victory ones perception might be shaded to look at the negative side. One thing that can help this outlook of defeat is a glimmer of hope. Hope is that no matter how bleak the situation looks one has an expectation that victory is possible but one needs one to show this person a glance of hope for them to keep hope alive.
For forty days there was no glance of hope for the troops and their hope was fading they were looking to their king, King Saul and he was looking to his men and all of them were looking with fear to Goliath wondering is victory even possible.
The other side of this time of waiting is that during their 40 days of waiting David was doing the work of his father, Jesse, shepherding the sheep. Jesse has three of his oldest sons in the army serving with Saul and he believes they are fighting and not actually waiting in fear. So Jesse sends David with some food to see about his brothers and how they are doing.
Therefore David goes to see about his brothers and just as the previous days Goliath comes out and taunts the army of Israel by defying their God. David sees this for one day and sees an opportunity for God to get the victory but for the past 40 days the army of Israel saw defeat and were paralyzed with fear.
