Good morning,
I hope everyone has had a wonderful week
Well its great to be back up here
I have a short time remaining
Orders to Germany 18 MP BN
Super excited and nervous but I know God is with me
I am also headed to school here in a few weeks so please keep me and my family in your prayers
So if you haven’t noticed, I sort of have an obsession for Jesus
All of my Bible Studies I teach here at the church are focused on him
Usually the sermons I preach are about Him
My day to day is trying to live up to His standard and yes I realize thats impossible
My whole life revolves around this one figure
Jesus
So I thought being that it is my last few weeks here and Heather has given me the opportunity, that I would spend the last couple of weeks here on the one I love with all my heart.
Jesus.
You see I don’t just see Him as a character in the Bible.
I don’t see Him as someone I am supposed to obey
I see EVERYTHING!
I see my hope, I see life beyond the grave, I see an example on how I am to live, I see the only means of salvation and my only way to be made right with God!
You see i have noticed a growing trend and its growing at a rate thats I feel it may be impossible to stop
A trend called humanism or self worship
Churches and sermons in many churches now days are so focused on this life
So focused on being a success here and now
So determined to motivate people to become all that they can be
And that’s great but heres the problem
The Bible teaches that the opposite.
The Bible teaches we are but exiles in a foreign land, that our true home is in Heaven with God
The Bible teaches that our lives are like the myst that comes from a breath on a cold day
Then comes eternity.
The Bible teaches that you are special,
That God created you to worship Him and to bring Him glory and honor and praise.
Jesus said in John
The Bible says the exact opposite of what we are being taught in motivational preaching
Turn real quick to
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
The Bible teaches that because of sin we are all in need of a savior
that the only way to be made right with God is through this savior
That without this savior we are all done for
Eternally separated from God
Forever to spend eternity apart from the one that made us
And this eternity is not like the world describes it
basic logic tells us that if God is good then the opposite of God is bad
I mean thats basic logic right?
So then the question must be asked, how am I made right with God?
So turn with me to where we are going to learn about our savior, our Messiah, our soon to be King, High Priest, the Lamb of God, our Scape Goat, our Salvation, and our only Hope
So if you would take your Bibles out please and turn with me to the book of Isaiah Chapter 52 first off.
The section we are reading actually begins in 52:13 so we are going to start there and work our way down to the rest of the chapter.
Everyone there?
If you could, I want you to get into the practice of following along, its so important for your growth to follow along and begin to let the Scriptures come alive.
Ok here we go
Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;
So shall He sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
For what had not been told them they shall see,
And what they had not heard they shall consider.
Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 52:13-
Context:
So this morning I want to give you a bit of context to help you understand the setting of this passage
The problem of sin
Sin is and always has been a major issue concerning the Bible
It something that we have downplayed and tend to ignore
I mean we even name our cities after the word
Yet the meaning of the word holds more significance than we think
In fact it means separation from God, hell, death and other synonyms that are synonomous with suffering.
So let me break it down for you
because this helps you understand your position before God
Like I said
I want to help you understand
Sin is what separates you from God
This happened way back in the Garden of Eden
Now here is where it gets interesting
You see Adam was supposed to represent all of mankind
So whatever he did it would affect all of us whether you like it or not
Those are the rules.
Well Adam sinned and therefore sin entered the world
What does this mean?
This means that because of Adams sin I am sinful as well
This means that I am enemies with God
So then along comes Jesus
A humble servant, a man that is capable of accomplishing in all areas that Adam failed.
Because of Him and His accomplishments, he is chosen by God to make atonement for us or to make it right.
And yet we are created for His glory
This is the story of a king who left his thrown to become a servant, suffered, and died so that his subjects could live. You are His subject. He loves you.
This is the story of a king who left his thrown to become a servant, suffered, and died so that his subjects could live. You are His subject. He loves you.
He became what you despise,
He became what we reject
He became what we hate
All so that in the midst of your rejection of Him, He could die for you. THATS LOVE
Who is this Jesus?
Who is this Jesus?
He is the fulfillment of the most offensive and glorified prophecy in all of the Old Testament.
How do we know that Jesus accomplished what was written nearly 700 years before Him?
Lets look at the details of
See, my servant will prosper;
he will be highly exalted.
But many were amazed when they saw him.
His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human,
and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man.
And he will startle many nations.
Kings will stand speechless in his presence.
For they will see what they had not been told;
they will understand what they had not heard about.
You can see this portion as a sort of preamble to the rest of the prophecy
He is going to prosper
He is going to suffer and not just any type of suffering
Isaiahs prophecy tells us in verse 14 that he will hardly be seen as human
That he would be beaten beyond all recognition.
That he would be scarcely recognizable as a man.
Anyone in here watch Mel Gibson’s movie the passion.
Can you tell me if this one came true?
Exactly!!
3. Despite his appearance He is going to dominate.
Now keep these in mind as you reflect back on what you know about Jesus.
Lets move on to Chapter 53
Notice in Verse 2 it says he grew up with nothing significant about Him
There was nothing that would have attracted you to Him
He was just an average ordinary child
And yet God calls Him His Servant
Don’t you find that interesting
So lets stop right here
God is setting a presedence
He is giving us the heart of the Gospel
He is telling us about His character
His devotion
His desire for us
His attributes that He wants us to understand about Him
God the Father
The king
The Creator
The end all be all
Has sent His servant and has raised Him up like a poor child from the back woods of Alabama!
Don’t you find that interesting?
Why not set Him on the throne of Rome
God could have very easily made him the emperor or something more majestic.
But NO!!
God through Isaiah says
His servant will be humble,
he will be nothing extraordinary in sense of how we understand extraordinary
He will be like you and I
Doesn’t that just melt your heart inside.
He wanted to connect
He wanted a relationship with you
He wanted to be your savior
He knew that wouldn’t be possible if He was rich and powerful
Instead He came to the masses
He came to be with us.
He came to be like us.
Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.
Hebrews
How many of us feel unworthy
Like we are unloved
Like we aren’t part of the crowd
Well this passage tells me you are loved beyond measure
Your creator wants to have that one on one with you
He desperately wants that relationship with you
You are significant to Him
You are loved!
Wow th
Lets move on before I start to cry
I’m serious I could spend the next hour on this one point, its just so powerful to me
So verse three
He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care.
Look at your life right now
You know if you’re in the right
You know if you’re in the wrong
But let me ask you
Does your life make a mockery of His?
Let me ask that again
Does your life make a mockery of His life His sacrifice?
Are you the very embodiment of verse number 3?
Let me ask it another way
When you are pouring out your heart and giving up your time and effort and even hard earned money for someone
All for their benefit
And they turn around and stab you in the back
How does that make you feel?
Daily I feel like
I encourage you to take some time daily
take an inventory of your life and make sure you’re not falling victim to this mentality.
Now look at verse
Because here is where it gets interesting
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him
the sins of us all.
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
It is in this section we start to see how He saves us
This is the heart and soul of the prophecy
So start thinking back to what you know of the Gospel
These three verses tell us that its because of his appearance that we feel God was punishing him
But isn’t that how we always look at things
Yet our ways are not His ways
Our thoughts are not His thoughts
The passage says that He became a servant
Not just a servant of God but a servant
One that is lowly
Poor
Again connecting with us as people
not with the mighty and powerful
Doesn’t this go along with What Jesus said
And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,
Regarding verse 5 the author of the book says
According to Isaiah the servant of the Lord somehow bears all the problems and pain we brought upon ourselves that result from living according to our own principles and not God’s. This person takes upon Himself the punishment that would otherwise fall on us, He receives the judgment brought on by our moral failures.
According to verse 7-8 he did it in silence.
He didn’t fight
He didn’t argue
He simply obeyed
He was led to a death he didn’t deserve
In fact the passage says he was led like a lamb to the slaughter
Why?
Because of love!
Look at
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
You know Sydney asked me that question the other day
Daddy would you die for me
I was kinda shocked at the question to be honest
First off I said off course I would because I love you
But then I asked her
Why do you ask that?
She said because Jesus died for me and I wanted to know if you loved me just as much as Jesus.
Then she proceeded to ask me the ultimate question
How do I accept Jesus into my heart or my life.
Boy you want to talk about jumping for joy followed by tears of joy followed by future plans for her in the ministry, all at once!!
To be honest I had to calm myself down
I mean that was the question right there
The one I had been waiting for
So I explained to her that her faith in Jesus is what saves her but lets ask God to continue to lead her into a deeper relationship with Christ.
Ok lets keep going or we are going to be here all day.
He had done no wrong
and had never deceived anyone.
But he was buried like a criminal;
he was put in a rich man’s grave.
Isaiah53:9
Did you read that?
He had done no wrong and decieved no one!
Yet treated like a criminal
And all for you!
He didn’t deserve any of this folks
and He did it out of love for you
and obedience to the Father
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Turn to 2 Cor
Look with me at
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
It can be said that our true character comes out when we are facing difficult or impossible circumstances
Suffering is
Jesus sat there and took the pain
took the punishment for you
He became the offering
He bled and died for you
He became your hope
You know once I was asked Where in the Old Testament does it says the Messiah will raise again from the dead?
He shall prolong His days
Jesus rose again on the third day and fulfilled what was written 700 years before
But here it is
verse 11
“My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities”
verse 11-20 tells us that the sacrificial system is complete in Yeshua.
Its His death though that is special
See in the sacrifical system
The death of an animal never forgave the sin simply took the punishment away
The punishment you deserve
But Jesus’s death fulfilled the demands of the Torah fulfilled the demands of the Law and forgave the sin.
We can now be with God!
Thats the Gospel right then and there folks
He became the
I don’t know if can be made any clearer than that
But just in case let me break it down one last time
Adams sin imputed sin nature
The promise of a Mes
We can no longer be in the presence of God.
We are sinful creatures from then on
Deserving of punishment
Deserving of death
Deserving of hell
But God allowed atonement to be made through the law
The law temporarily took away the punishment
Still did not allow us to be with God
Then Jesus comes
Fulfills the law
Fulfills
Becomes the ultimate sacrifice
Becomes the passover lamb
Our sins are forgiven
We are now at peace with God
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Application
Application
Some of you know
My grandmother was a Methodist Pastor for 30+ years
She recently retired
On her final sermon she said something super impactful that still affects me
Does your life give honor to Jesus and if not its time to ask why?
My grandmother said on her final
She said something that truly terrified me
We are all going to meet God one day
We are all going to answer for everything we did
What excuse are you going to give Him disobedience?
Not just disobedience in morality
disobedience in service
If your faith does not cost you three things then you need to start evaluating things.
Time
Money
Energy
Money, I know, I am not talking about tithing here although I do believe in tithing.
But how is God using your money?
Are you allowing God to use your time?
Do you serve the body of Christ in some capacity or have you become a consumer of church?
Christ’s fulfillment of meant he went through a lot
that it was planned
that it was deliberate
that he knew you would rebel
he knew you would reject him
and yet
he loved you so much that he did it anyways
The Bible is a story,
A story from beginning to end about a God desperate to be in relationship with His creation
If you haven’t already are you willing to give up your life for Him?
and if you already have what more are you willing to give for Him?
Lets pray.
Sin is what separates you from God
This happened way back in the Garden of Eden

You see Adam was supposed to represent all of mankind
So whatever he did it would affect all of us.
