Introduction

Last week we witnessed Jesus being set up and betrayed by one of his very own disciples Judas. He came and as a sign of affection used a kiss for the identification on Jesus to his arresting squad.
Peter takes out a sword and cut off the ear of one of the high priests servants.
Jesus shows enormous restraint and compassion. Luke chapter 22 tells us Jesus put a stop to the resistance and by touching the mans ear healed him. Jesus points out in
Matthew 26:53 ESV
Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
He shows us the way to place complete trust in the Father’s will
He was then brought before the sanhedrin which was the supreme court in the jewish land and falsely accused.
In verse 61 Jesus was asked are you the Christ, the son of the blessed? His answer in verse 62 is what sent the authorities over the edge.
Mark 14:
Mark 14:62 ESV
And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
This answer caused the hight priest to tare his garments, “you have heard his blasphemy. Whats your decision? “ and they all condemned him as deserving death.
Mean while Peter was below in the courtyard. He was accused 3 times as being one of the followers of Jesus. He denied it all three times and then the rooster crowd a second time. Peter remembered the words of Jesus
He broke down and wept
Now we will move on today and pick up starting chapter 15 starting in verse 1

Jesus brought to Pilate

verse 1 says they held council. This was prob because they needed to figure out how to kill him. The jews didn’t have the authority to put anyone to death because they were controlled and ruled by Rome.
They had to bring him to the governor which was Pontius Pilate. He ruled the area AD 26-36 He was known as a harsh governor who despised the Jews. Normally he resided in Caesarea by the Med sea but he came to Jerusalem on special occasions such as the passover festival to maintain order.
Pilate has sole responsibility for the courts decisions for Rome. The Jewish leaders pronounced the judgment of Blasphemy on Jesus, but they needed to figure out how to get the Romans to kill him. Pilate did not care about the jewish God or Blasphemy. They had to convince Pilate Jesus was guilty of Treason.
Pilate’s question is exactly the same in all four Gospels (, and
ARE YOU KING OF THE JEWS? or in other words are you King of Isreal?
Jesus answers “YOU HAVE SAID SO” he gave a cryptic reply Lit YOU (emphatic) SAY in other words “The designation is your” saying yes but not in the way Pilate understood it
gives us some more insight into what Jesus ment
John 18:37–38 ESV
Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
Jesus was telling him he is King but not political kingdom. Of course Pilate totally misses what Jesus is telling him here.
Jesus tells him he came to bear witness to the truth. Pilate said to him what is truth
In verse 3 the chief priests accused him many things, They accused him of as many things as they could. But Jesus made no further answer, so Pilate was amazed
I
Isaiah 53:7 ESV
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
John 18:33–38 ESV
So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
Psalm 38:13–14 ESV
But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.
Such silence was rare in a Roman court. Jesus silence shows us that He the SON of Man suffered and died within God’s sovereign plan. Pilate seemed to have a feeling that Jesus was not guilty. He tries to avoid pronouncing Judgment when he learns Jesus is a Galilean, he sends him to Herod Antipas who was the governor of Galilee. This doesnt work as Herod sends him back to Pilate. You can see this what happened in
(verse 6) Pilate attempts to gain acquittal for Jesus were futile. Each year during passover if was the governor’ custom to release a prisoner selected by the people. He assumed the people would request Jesus’ release
(verse 8) Barabbas a notorious robber and murderer was awaiting execution. The people (crowd) approached Pilate’s elevated judgment seat and asked to grant the passover amnesty
Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews? You see Pilate knew the jewish leaders did not hand Jesus over because they held Allegence to Rome. He perceived it was out of envy and Hatred.
The leaders in verse 11 stirred up the crowd to release for them Barabbas instead. Pilate again said to them “then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
Mark 15:13–15 ESV
And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
mark 15:13
TO pilates amazement. Wishing to satisfy the crowd. What is crucifixion?
having him scourged?
The prisoner was stripped, often tied to a post, and beaten on the back by several guards using short leather whips studded with sharp pieces of bone or metal. No limit was set on the number of blows. Often this punishment was fatal.
Pilate had Jesus flogged in hope that the people would take pity and be satisfied. But this also failed; they still insisted He be crucified

Jesus and the soldiers

Called together the whole battalion 200-300 men
They clothed him in a purple cloak and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put if on him
these soldiers unwittingly gave us a picture of God’s curse on sinful humanity with this crown of thorns
Genesis 3:17–18 ESV
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.
The jews longed for a king, these romans mocked him spit on him, the purple cloak and the crown of thorns as they saluted him, Hail King of the Jews!
The one who answered his arresting mod when asking them whom do you seek? They responded Jesus of Naz and he said I am He, they all few back
The one who said to the phar, before Abraham was I am
The one who said I am the way, the life, and the truth no one comes to the father but through me
The one who said I am the resurrection, and the life,
The one who said I am the bread of life, I am the living water
The one who said I am the true shepherd
The one the bible calls the King of Kings and the Lord or Lords by which every knee will bow and declare Jesus is Lord
This King remained silent and accepted God’s will taking on the curse of sinful man upon him self so that all who believe in him will have their sins forgiven and be granted eternal life
Mark 15:20 ESV
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
Mark 15
