Catch up: 1 Samuel 16-17
Samuel anointed David the next King.
In front of and ahead of all of his brothers.
David was now in “the service” of Saul
Armor-bearer - Duh, one who bears arms right?
Yes - sort of “One who carried the large shield and other weapons for a king, commander-in-chief, captain, or champion.
All warriors of distinction had an Armor-Bearer.”
This is a BIG DEAL.
David was pledged to Saul, to help him, to attend to his flocks, fight his battles, to relieve Saul from the PRESSURE that he was under

This is the story of David and Goliath
This story apart from the spiritual aspects rings very true to Old Testament, New Testament, Non-believers.
- It is a classic illustration about the “little guy” “about the one picked last” “about the one who couldn’t play ball but smacks a home run etc.
Let’s start in this corner Goliath
And in the other corner
The term these days among the kids is “triggered” excited, jazzed, ready to go, could be happy or angry.
David was ready!
Well, the little man, the underdog, the late entry, the impossible has happened.
1 Samuel 18
So David returned a hero and Saul became “very concerned” about his base of power.
He had learned to keep his friends close and his enemies closer
Here is the key verse this week.

OK…Here is the big idea
When you find that you are on the side of the Lord…stay there!
I have made some VERY bone-headed decisions in my life.
If you have about 50 hours sometime I’ll tell you those that I remember…You can ask Jill for the ones that I have forgotten!!
Then comes the things I’ve done…that’s another thing and another long discussion.
I stand here today…not as an example of doing everything right.
But I stand here at the intersection of Grace and the Cross, living a redeemed life by the power of the Holy Spirit.
That’s all I’ve got to offer you.
At my core, I am a living, breathing example that a failed and faulty man can be redeemmed by His Grace and Mercy.
I want to get back to scripture and let that speak to us.
Beginning in verse 17
OK…we have seen this before back in Genesis.
Man wants girl, girl wants man, Father steps and steps in it.
Father wants to use marriage to manipulate the potential son-in-law.
Didn’t work well in Genesis, is not working so well here
Lesson #1...
Don’t step in and play God; there’s only one God and you are not Him
Pray to Him, ask for peace, ask for His guidance, ask Him to change your mind, ask Him for conviction, even ask him for patience.
JUST ASK!!
He may say “Yes” I was waiting for someone to pray.
He may say, “No.” stay out of my lane here.
He may say wait for an answer.
Let me repeat it again just in case you missed it
Don’t step in and play God; there’s only one God and you are not Him.
I am constantly amazed at the world around us we, all of us collectively think we know more than the Creator of the universe.
We make choices that are clearly not in accordance with His will…Yet he still loves us!
He loves us enough to send his only begotten Son so that we would have a once-for-all place to leave our sin.
Back to the scripture
Saul once again played the bait-n-switch with his daughter, not for the sake of his daughter but to try and hold on to power for himself.

Saul did a bone-headed thing
Lesson #2
When it becomes a “God-thing” get out of the way and let it happen.
God had this direct communication thing with the current players in this story…He was speaking directly to them in many cases.
Still they didn’t listen.
Here is some news for you…you have God speaking to you right now, today, tomorrow and forever.
YOU HAVE A MEMBER OF THE TRINITY, THE TRIUNE GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT!
Listen carefully, even amongst the noise of our world He still speaks to us.
Lesson #3
Listen to those around you.
Receive the counsel of others, even your children when you are making decisions.
The same Holy Spirit you are relying on; dwells in them
OK… this is always a tough one.
“I’m not listening to you…I changed your diapers.”
I would give my Father some pretty good advice…he would in turn attribute to one of my step-brothers…that was a tough one until I figured out that that he got the message one-way or another.
In this passage there is a minute account of an danger to which David needs to react quickly. .
I. We are frequently exposed to alarming dangers.
(1) This danger usually comes quickly and unexpectedly.
(2) This danger usually comes from “the enemy” from satan or one of his minions.
(3) This danger is a RIGHT NOW! thing.
II.
God’s servants are frequently warned of approaching danger.
(1) David’s warning came from the woman is his life.
If you have a wife or significant other…listen carefully.
(2) this warning demanded immediate attention.
(3) the warning led to decisive action.
III.
God frequently delivers us from impending dangers.
By several ways: (1) By listening to the counsel of others (2) By personal watchfulness.
(4) By a God thing...

Lesson #4
Trust and Obey!
How different is the work of the Spirit on those who trust God.
Those, like Saul, who refuse to “humble [themselves] … under the mighty hand of God” soon find themselves under the sway of a very different spirit, one which

When you find that you are on the side of the Lord…stay there!
I hope that we have come to understand what this means and how we can get her.
It’s easy to say “Let go, Let God.”
With the power His spirit that can be a reality for us.
Communion
Take this time before communion to connect with God as he reminds us of our sin of our short comings.
Confess and repent of those shortcomings of that sin in your life.
Offer to him the honor and praise that he is due.
