Holier Than Thou Glasses
There are times in the life of a Christian that we have special glasses that we wear.
When we place these glasses on we are unable to see the sins of ourselves and only the sins of others.
With these holier than thou glasses we begin to rank sins and we usually hold ourselves in higher esteem than others.
We even misread scripture when we have the glasses on.
Let’s take a look at an example. 1 Cor.
6:9-10

And what happens is that we create this environment that will amplify sexual sins all the while ignoring the fact that we are OK with other things like;
Thieves- We are OK with buying clothes from boosters and paying for bootleg movies and music.
Covetous- We are OK with being greedy and wanted more than what is necc.
drunkards- We totally ignore being drunk.
Some are fighting hangovers and coming down from the highs from last night.
Revilers- Most don’t pay attention to this word because we don’t understand it.
But it simply means to verbally abuse someone.
Someone who is a slanderer.
Extortioners- One who violently carries off the possessions of another by force.
And here we have this section of people who are fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, homosexuals/trans/gender fluid/Q and they are most definitely not going to heaven!
And we must ask ourselves a serious question about the whole thing.
Is this culture, way of thinking, way of treating people correct?

Pharisee- The separate ones.
They were more open to new ideas than the Sadducees but did not believe highly in mingling with others who were not like them.

Sinner Woman- She would not have been one that a Pharisee would have wanted to be associated with.
Alabaster Jar- Expensive soft stone container
Perfume- Something used for the purpose of hydrating skin and smelling good!
This would have cost 300 denarii according to other Gospel accounts

At his feet- position of humility
Weeping- loud crying
“…began to wash his feet with her tears.”
This woman was truly sorry for her condition!
Her condition was NOT changed by the fact that she was sorry but she was sorry nonetheless.
“She wiped his feet with her hair...”
Dried his feet with her hair.
Would have been shameful for a woman to let her hair down in this culture.
Could have been cause for a divorce.
“Kissing them and anointing them with perfume.”
HIS FEET!
This woman, knowing her own condition, went to the extreme to come to the one who could fix what she could not.

When he saw that Jesus was allowing the sinner to come to him he began to doubt Jesus based on association.
He had on his holier than though glasses

Jesus uses this as a moment to teach instead of rebuke

Creditor- Someone who lends money
Debtors- Someone who takes money from a creditor.
They OWE.
500 denarii- 500 days wages!
At $10 an hour that’s $40,000!!
50 denarii- 50 days wages!
At $10 an hour that’s $4,000!

The creditor zeroed out BOTH balances even though their debts were of different value.
“So, which of them will love him more?”
WHICH OF THEM IS GOING TO SHOW HIM MORE AGAPE?
SHOW HIM MORE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE?
JESUS IS TELLING HIM TO NOT SEE HER ACTIONS AS STRANGE OR HIS ACCEPTANCE OF IT AS STRANGE!

Feet Washing
It would have been customary to offer water for his feet.
Or at least have one of the servants do it.
SHE USED HER TEARS AND HAIR
KISS
It would have been a customary greeting to give a kiss as a greeting.
SHE WAS KISSING HIS FEET
OIL ON HEAD
It would have been customary to put olive oil on his head to rehydrate your company’s skin.
SHE USED EXPENSIVE OIL FROM AN EXPENSIVE CONTAINER WORTH 300 DENARII TO PUT ON HIS FEET!
Even though she was an outsider she was 100% invested in Jesus.
She gave her all.
While the holy Pharisee was halfway invested in Jesus.
How grateful are we towards Jesus based on what he did for us?
Do the actions shown towards us translate towards others?

Many sins
Forgiven- This word for forgiven points towards the alleviation of the guilt felt because of actions and does not erase the actions.
The only one who can do this is the one who is responsible for the judgment of sins.
The creditor!
“But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.”
This does not mean the one who has committed less sins.
But it points towards the fact that there are some who think that they have sinned less because of quantity!
Sin is sin!
DON’T GET LOST IN SIN COUNT, UNDERSTAND THAT OUR ONE SIN IS EQUIVALENT TO THE SINNER WHO HAS A THOUSAND!
You don’t need this guilt burdening you down.
The hate from this little town is outweighed by my forgiving love!
It does not matter how badly you have sinned Jesus is waiting for you to let you know that you don’t have to hold onto the guilt associated with them.
Come to Him and He can unburden your heart!
Luke is allowing the reader to see here that Jesus is identifying himself as the Christ!
The chosen one to forgive sin!
Her blind trust in Him saved her!
Have you committed the sin of fornication and adultery?
Do you struggle with the sin of homosexuality?
Is it hard for you to say no? Do you daily feel the guilt of such sin?
