Introduction

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Unified with Christ

Introduction

Have you ever listened to someone pray who seemed like they were just best friends with God? The kind of person who talks to God like they would talk to anyone else — no special words or phrases that get repeated in emptiness — just a genuine conversation with the creator of the universe.
I love hearing people like that pray. You know what would be even more amazing? Hearing Jesus pray. In fact, there’s a passage in Scripture where we can not only read what Jesus prayed, but his prayer actually was for us. You and me, today, in this room.

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 mI in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 mI in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

John 17:20–23 KJV 1900
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Christ’s Prayer For Us

Christ’s Prayer For Us

Being one with Christ starts with believing in His Word
John 17:20 KJV 1900
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Everything we do starts with the Word of God from salvation to sanctification
From salvation to sanctification
“Teach all nations” = salvation
“Teaching them to observe whatsoever I have commanded you:” = sanctification (being more like Jesus)
Sanctification

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Matthew 28:19–20 KJV 1900
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Peace and hope
If we want to be one in our youth group and in our church, we need to start with the Word of God, personally in our lives for salvation and sanctification
Being one with Christ means we are all as one together
John 17:21 KJV 1900
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

The word “all” here in Greek has the following definition:
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Includes the idea of oneness, a totality or the whole, the same as hólos (3650), the whole.

When Christ is speaking of all here, he is eliminating the ability for their to be division between Christians. We are supposed to be one in Him
Regardless of: Grade, School, Family, Ethnicity, Personality — we are to be one together.

Being one with Christ means following Christ’s example of doing the will of the Father
John 17:22 KJV 1900
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

John 6:38 KJV 1900
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Jesus’ passion was to do the will of the Father, and in this moment, he was looking to the cross he was about to die on as the “glory which thou gavest me”
Unified with One Another
To be one, Jesus knew that we would need to have the same passion to to do the will of the Father that he did
Unified with
Being one with Christ means other people will see God for who He is
As

23 mI in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

John 17:23 KJV 1900
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Amen.
The ultimate purpose for us to have a church, and to have a youth group, is for God to get glory.
The beauty of unity in a youth group is that other people notice — it’s contagious.

The Christian mission identical with that of Christ:—Here are two impressive facts. One is that Jesus is holding converse with the Father about the conversion of the world, and the Christians whom He was to leave in it. The other is that Christ regards the mission of those Christians in the world as practically identical with His own. The two missions are identical.

When people are willing to set themselves aside and show the love of Christ to others everybody wins and God gets glory.

Closing

Our prayer for our youth group needs to reflect Jesus’ prayer for us: to be one. We must be united: in His Word, together as one, doing the will of the Father, for the purpose of Him receiving glory.
Would you pray this week for our youth group to be one with Christ and with each other?
