intro

It was not easy to be a Christian in Thessalonica where believers faced persecution and suffering.
Their situation explains Paul’s choice of words:
affliction (; ), which means “pressure from circumstances”;
1 Thessalonians 1:6 AV
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
1 Thessalonians 3:3 AV
3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
suffered (), the same word used for our Lord’s sufferings; persecuted (), meaning “driven out and rejected”;
1 Thessalonians 2:14 AV
14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
1 Thessalonians 2:15 AV
15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
contrary (), used of winds that blow against and hinder progress; and
1 Thessalonians 2:15 AV
15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
hindered (), which pictures a road so broken up that travel is blocked.
1 Thessalonians 2:18 AV
18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
Do some of these words sound familier? Do they describe situations in your life?
Yet in the midst of suffering, the Thessalonian Christians experienced joy.
They received Paul’s ministry of the Word “in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit” ().
1 Thessalonians 1:6 AV
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
And the biggest question many christians ask is HOW?
The answer: By Using the resource God has made avalible tio us: His Word.

God’s Word within Us

1 Thessalonians 2:13 AV
13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
The church has been founded on the Word of God, the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
You are saved by the hearing of the Word of God.
The same Word that brings us salvation also enables us to live for Christ and endure suffering for His sake.
They appreciated the Word.
They appreciated the Word.
They did not receive it as the word of men; they received it as the Word of God.
We must never treat the Bible as any other book, for the Bible is different in origin, character, content, and cost.

The Bible is the Word of God.

It was inspired by the Spirit of God and written by men of God who were used by the Spirit.
God’s Word is holy, pure, and perfect.
Psalm 19:7–9 AV
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
).
The Bible was written at great cost, not only to the writers, but to Jesus Christ who became Man that the Word of God might be given to us.
The way a Christian treats his Bible shows how he regards Jesus Christ.
He is the living Word (, ), and the Bible is the written Word; but in essence they are the same.
1: Both are bread
Matthew 4:4 AV
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
; ),
John 6:48 AV
48 I am that bread of life.
; ),
2: Both are Light
; ),
Psalm 119:105 AV
105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
John 8:12 AV
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
; ),
3: Both are truth
John 14:6 AV
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 17:17 AV
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
; ).
jn 17:17).
4.1: The Holy Spirit gave birth to Jesus Christ through a holy woman.
The Holy Spirit gave birth to Jesus Christ through a holy woman (),
Luke 1:35 AV
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
4.2: And The Holy Spirit gave birth to the Bible through holy men of God.
2 Peter 1:20–21 AV
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
5.1: Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God forever.
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God forever (),
Romans 1:25 AV
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
5.2: And the Word of God will live forever
and the Word of God will live forever (; , ).
Psalm 119:89 AV
89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
; , ).
; , ).
Would you rather have your Bible than food?
Job said,
Job 23:12 AV
12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
“I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food” ().
God’s Word is bread
God’s Word is bread (),
Matthew 4:4 AV
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
),
milk and meat
milk and meat (),
Hebrews 5:11–14 AV
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
and even honey
and even honey ().
Psalm 119:103 AV
103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Mary chose the Word, but her sister Martha got involved in making a meal ().
Mary chose the Word, but her sister Martha got involved in making a meal ().
Mary got the blessing while Martha lost the victory.
Would you rather have God’s Word than money?
The believer who wrote made it clear that God’s Word meant more to him than “all riches”
Psalm 119:14 AV
14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
Psalm 119:72 AV
72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
Psalm 119:127 AV
127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.
Psalm 119:162 AV
162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.
“thousands of gold and silver” (),
“fine gold” (),
and even “great spoil” ().
I recall a young couple I sought to help in one of my churches.
They had a lovely little son, but they were very careless about attending church and Sunday School.
The little boy was not getting the Christian training he needed.
A visit to the home told me why: the father wanted more money and so he worked on Sundays to make double time.
He did not have to work on the Lord’s Day, but he wanted the money rather than God’s Word. He earned more money, but he was never able to keep it. The little son became ill and the extra money went to doctors.
Would you rather have God’s Word than sleep?
Psalm 119:148 AV
148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.
“My eyes anticipate the night watches, that I may meditate on Thy Word” (, nasb).
The Jews had three night watches: sunset to 10, 10 to 2, and 2 until dawn.
The psalmist gave up sleep three times each night that he might spend time with the Word.
But some Christians cannot get out of bed on Sunday morning to study the Word.

conclusion

If a solder put at little effort into know how to use, clean, fire nd look after his rifle he would be a poor solder and would probibly get KIA in his first battle.
There is no big secret to joy church.
If we are going to be victorious in suffering, we must appreciate the Word.
But there is a second attitude we must show toward the Bible.
