Our words in the darkness are formed in times of calm and blessings.
We life gets tough we go on auto-pilot. Our training shows when we are in the midst of battle. We must be good disciples now, in preparation for the days ahead.
We will experience trouble!
We will experience trouble!
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
What does your trouble/darkness look like today?
What does your trouble/darkness look like today?
Jonah is drowning.
Jonah is drowning.
He has been hurled out of the boat. The sailors are saved but as we pick up the story we are unsure what will happen to Jonah.
God is sovereign.
God is sovereign.
God can do miracles.
God can do miracles.
Jonah is saved by a great fish.
Jonah is saved by a great fish.
This fact on its own causes some to doubt the book of Jonah. Sometimes we highlight the fish, call it a “whale”, and make a big deal about it that we miss the larger point. We do not know what animal this was, the word could mean a sea monster, and our author only mentions the animal in passing, and that of one who is following commands.
Jonah prays what he has heard.
Jonah prays what he has heard.
Kind of!!
Kind of!!
The prayer of Jonah 2 is very similar to Psalm 30 and other Psalms of Thanksgiving.
In times of trouble, we go on auto-pilot!
In times of trouble, we go on auto-pilot!
This is why growing in our faith, being part of a group of people studying Scripture while things are going well is vitally important to our faith.
Troubles reveals our idols.
Troubles reveals our idols.
What are our/your idols?
What are our/your idols?
These are the things we turn to first when life gets interesting. These may not be “bad” things but we are reminded in Scripture to not but anything above our Lord. We are to love him FIRST, other things second.
God is our steadfast, loyal love.
God is our steadfast, loyal love.
This is his “hesed” love, his covenant love. Elsewhere we read that God’s love is a jealous kind of love.
We may forfeit God’s grace!
We may forfeit God’s grace!
Jesus alone brings salvation!
Jesus alone brings salvation!
Hebrew for salvation is “Yeshua”. The angel in visiting Joseph said you will name your son, “Yeshua” for he will save his people from their sins.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
God hears your cry!
God hears your cry!
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
