Intro: We’re back in the book of 2 Samuel today, and we come to back to the the story of the of this man God David…who is a man after God’s own heart yet, still only a man, with real life issues, real life weaknesses, and real life failures.
Recap
And this is what we saw last time we were together, David was in the midst of a season of unrepentant sin, he had stolen the wife from a man named uriah, and gotten her pregnant, and instead of coming clean, He does what he’s prone to do which is lie, cover up, and hide...
But You can’t hide from God…Moses gave a good word of warning to the people of Israel in the book of Numbers...”Your sin will find you out”
God would expose David through a Prophet and friend David Nathan…who came to him, told him a story about a wicked thief and once David was all up in arms about this thief…Nathan said “David…You are that man”
After a year of hiding David comes clean - () “I have sinned against the Lord”
Being exposed was the first step towards restoration...
The next step was owning the sin which David did - () “I have sinned against the Lord”
This is what real last repentance begins with…it’s an understanding that before you have sinned against anyone else…We sin against God
13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.
He’s of greatest Importance
He’s the one who created you for his purposes…and sin is essentally stealing from him
We break his commandment
According to the Law David deserved to die, but God would be gracious with David…and not give him what He deserved
(Prep) Now as we walk through this passage today, we’re gonna see 2 things happens with David…
Don’t you wish
(Prep) Now as we walk through this passage today, we’re gonna see 2 things happens with David…we’re gonna see further Restoration…and we’re gonna see Further repercussion to David’s sinful decisions
we’re gonna see further Restoration (12:26-31)
we’re gonna see further repercussion to David’s sinful decisions (13:1-22) - This is where we’re gonna spend the bulk of our time
…and we’re gonna see Further repercussion to David’s sinful decisions
Don’t you wish that If you did something wrong…all you had to do was own it…repent…and all the effects of your sin just disappeared…that would be awesome…but it’s not how things work
Today we’re gonna see God’s restoring David…yet there’s still repercussions
Now there was consciences
Restoration
Restoration
and I just want read it all and make some observations about it...
26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city.
27 And Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters.
28 Now then gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called by my name.”
29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it.
30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone, and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount.
31 And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes and made them toil at the brick kilns. And thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
2 sam 12:26-
26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city.

Now this supposedly takes place about a year after all of these events with David took place…so we’re talking about a 2 and a half year war…a war which began with David being where he shouldn’t have been (Home during war) looking at what he shouldn’t have been looking at (Bathsheba) and commuting a sin that would have huge consequences…But the Lord exposed it, David has owned it, and Lord in his mercy begins to restore David...
2 sam 12:26-
We see this is 3 ways...
Now this supposedly takes place about a year after all of these events with David took place…so we’re talking about a 2 and a half year war…which is about to come to a close...
The battle was finally won
The battle was finally won
26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city. 27 And Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters…than verse 9 says...29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it. - So we read that the royal city is taken, which is where the royal palace was, and the water to the city had been cut …Game over…anytime you take out the leadership and you cut off the water...this will cause any house to come down
So we read that the royal city is taken, which is where the royal palace was, and the water to the city had been cut …Game over…and the truth is…this will cause any house to come down
but would you notice that this battle was only won after David has repented and taking care of his stuff
but would you notice that this battle was only won after David had won the battle against his own personal sin...It was almost like the Lord was saying “you will never have complete victory in that until you get victory in this”
It was almost like the Lord was saying “you will never have complete victory in that until you get victory in this”
S
App: In that same way, there are great battles that you’re trying to get victory over now, that you can’t get victory over because God’s like “No…before you win the win youre wife back, you need to win the war against last...
Are there strongholds that God wants you to surrender before he takes care of that other one?
Question: Are there strongholds that God wants you to surrender before he takes care of that other one?
Here’s another part of God’s restoration of David...
David returned to the battle
David returned to the battle
The king returns to the battle
The king returns to the battle
29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it.
2 sam 12:
This was the final phase of David’s restoration. He went back to doing what he should have done all along – leading Israel out to battle winning wars for the Lord...
Now this isn’t always the case with a fallen leader, but it was here with David…but think about David when he owned up to his sin…He knew that it was his relationship with God that needed to be restored more than anything
Important: Though this was the case here, don’t ever think that this is permission for you to remain in unrepentant sin because it’s not...
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Illustration: I’ve heard of many preachers who after the’ve fallen the first thing they ask is “When can I start preaching again?
App: True restoration is to the Lord first…and than whatever happens after that is up to God.. but man how much did it mean for David to know that it wasn’t too late to still be used by God to this capacity
…and what that must have been for David to know that it wasn’t too late to still be used by God to this capacity
God didn’t owe David these things because David repented…God was simply merciful in a way that doesn’t make sense
Here’s the last thing...
App: There are some who get really disappointed with God because God didn’t restore everything to you that he did to David
God doesn’t owe you...
Here’s the last thing...
God still blessed David
God still blessed David
30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone, and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount.
2 sam 12:30
David’s sin cost David a lot…But God still loved him and he stilled had blessings for him...Because David responded with confession and repentance, there was sill a crown for David’s head.
Here’s the picture…God didn’t owe David any of this…Yet God gave it because he’s good
i.
“David’s fall should put those who have not fallen on their guard, and save from despair those who have.” (Augustine)
So we’ve seen this great scene of restoration in the life of David but now entering into Chapter 13 we’re confronted with some repercussions of David’s sin…not so much in a direct sense, but definitely in an indirect sense
Now here’s the You and I need to remember about this restoration: This is not always promised:
Illustration: A lot of people have been talking about show Chernobyl…It’s about a nuclear explosion in 1986 due to gross negligence…at the time of the blast around 30 people died but because the explosion caused so much damage to the atmosphere…they bel0ieve thousands have dies since
God didn’t owe David these things because David repented…God was simply merciful in a way that doesn’t make sense
Point: Thats a good picture of sin…It damages the person…and it damages the atmosphere
App: There are some who get really disappointed with God because God didn’t restore everything to you that he did to David
God doesn’t owe you...
Repercussions
Repercussions
“David’s fall should put those who have not fallen on their guard, and save from despair those who have.” (Augustine)
David’s sin (His multiple wives, his sin with Bathsheba) damaged the atmosphere for his sons
What your gonna see as we enter into the last half of this book is that though David was a good man, his the consequences for his sinful decisions are finally gonna come to bear in his family
What your gonna see as we enter into the last half of this book is that though David was a good man, his sinful decisions are finally gonna come to bear in his kingdom and his family
And it starts In this chapter...we’re gonna see a cruel and wicked act between David’s Son Ammon and his sister Tamar…this chapter is an account of rape and incest...
It’s not one to be taken lightly...
So let’s Go...
1 Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her.
2 sam 13:
So the word “now” speaks of a transition, and we also see that time has passed…and now the scene is the royal family and we meet the players of this chapter...
Absalom and Tamar - Brother and sister, children to one of David wives named Ma-aca who was the daughter of the king of Jeshure (2 sam 3:3)
And then you have Amnon - Who is David’s first born son which means he’s the crown prince and first in line to the throne and He’s the step brother to both Absalom and Tamar and is mother was Aha-nouim
Here’s the picture - They were from 2 different wives of David…Remember the Lord never condones paligamy and the bible is quick to show the damages of it
Here we see he is in love with his step sister, but we’ll see in a minute that it’s the furthest thing from love as defined in Scripture
And we’re gonna look at this account in “Movments”
We see a salve
We see a salve
A Slave
A Slave
2 And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her.
2 sam 13:
So it would be easy to just say that Ammon is “Love sick” over Tamar…but remember this is not love…this is a lustful and twisted obsession…and what it for? the forbidden fruit…She was his sister and she was a virgin....this is why he wanted her
See Amnon is what we would call a slave to his flesh…and do know what the flesh always wants? that which it can’t have.
Illustration: Have you ever noticed that for people who essentally switch off that moral side of themselves and begin to follow their desires…have you ever noticed how they never stop? why because the flesh is never satisfied…it always wants the next thing
Illustration: One of the most coveted things in this culture is “Freedom”…and often times we think “I’ll have more freedom if I can just make more money, or if i can just have less rules” but have you noticed that it’s those who have those things who have the least amount of control over themselves
App: There’s something about the flesh where if it’s left to rule you…it will never be satisfied…and nothing good can come out of it
How do you become a slave to the flesh? - Practice
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Thats why Paul tells us
Thats why Paul tells us
How do you get dominion over it?
Thats why Paul tells us
Thats why Paul tells us
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This is both a one time decision and an everyday choice…I’m gonna make my life about knowing him, I’m gonna believe his word, I’m walk in step with his spirit…because I want the freedom that the Word promises to those who put on christ
“Freedom is not the ability to do whatever you want. Freedom is the strength of character to do what is good, true, noble, and right.” - Matthew Kelly

How do you break the control over your flesh? - Walk in the Spirit ()Understand that God has giving you and I tools how we can be in step with the spiritHis wordHis peopleHis workMake no provision for the flesh - Roman’s 13:14
So we this guy who’s enslaved to his flesh and now we the next player...
A Wicked Counselor
A Wicked Counselor
3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man.
4 And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
2 SAM 13:3-4
So notice that Amnon has a friend Named Jonadab…who’s actually a cousin to him
Matthew Kelly
Notice some things about him:
Notice some things about him:
He’s smart - V.3 calls him“Very crafty” this word “Crafty” is used a lot in the O.T. and means “skilled, experience, or even wise” and this word was used to describe. a lot of the skilled men in exodus who built the temple…and even used to describe joseph’s ability in Egypt So he’s a talented guy
He’s smart - The bible calls him “Very crafty” this the same word “Crafty” is used a lot in the O.T. and means “skilled, experience, or even wise” and this word was used to describe. a lot of the skilled men in exodus who built the temple…and even used to describe joseph’s ability in Egypt So he’s a talented guy
But He was a godless friend - We’re gonna see that by his counsel...And because he was a godless friend…has was no longer a help to amnon, he was an enemy
He was a godless friend - And because he was a godless friend…has was no longer a help to amnon, he was an enemy
As we go further into this story, we’re gonna see that he was a real scoundrel
He was persistent - (v.4) Why are you so haggard, will you not tell me? - This is a good reminder to me, that if we are unwilling to have conversations about uncomfortable things with our kids…There’s a Jonadab that will
He was persistent - (v.4) Why are you so haggard, will you not tell me? - This is a good reminder to me, that if we are unwilling to have conversations about uncomfortable things with our kids…There’s a Jonadab that will
App: Do you know what Amnon needed right here? a friend….who says “What are you doing?”
App: Do you know what Amnon needed right here? a friend….who says “What are you doing?”
“For the believer, dangerous friends are not just the “godless ones” but the “spineless ones”
“For the believer, dangerous friends are not just the “godless ones” but the “weak ones” as well…we might know them better as the “yes men”
App: Chose your friends wisely, and don’t be a yes man
Chose your friends wisely, and don’t be a yes man
Look at his plan...
5 Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’ ”
6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.”
8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes.
9 And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him.
10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
So Jonadab gives the plan…Now in those days, the wives and the daughter lived in separate accommodations from the men and thats why it’s said it was “Impossible for Amnon to do anything to her” and it seems that the princes had their own apartments so to speak, but king David seems like he would go and visit them from time to time and check in…and Jonadab tells Amnon “act sick and tell the king to send you Tamar to tend to you”…essentally playing upon the love and gullible nature of Dad.
So here’s the picture - You have these 2 wicked men creating an elaborate plan to steal this young ladies innocence…and all of it was set into by a gullible parent…”v.7 And David sent Tamar”
So here’s the picture - You have these 2 wicked men creating an elaborate plan to steal this young ladies innocence…and all of it was set into by a gullible parent…v.7 And David sent Tamar
Could it have been Ignorance? - I think the it would have been more of selective ignorance…we’re gonna see here that there was a general sense that Amnon had his father eating out of his hand…whatever the case David was unable or unwilling to see and address the massive issues his Son had
Could it have been Ignorance? - I think the it would have been more of selective ignorance…we’re gonna see here that there was a general sense that Amnon had his father eating out of his hand…whatever the case David was unable or unwilling to see and address the massive issues his Son had
App: Is that you? Our kids don’t need us to be their friends, they need us to be their parents…
App: Is that you? Our kids don’t need us to be their friends, they need us to be their parents…
Because If we don’t chose to address those issues…someone else will have too and in this case it was gonna be His daughter…Tamar
Because If we don’t chose to address those issues…someone else will have too and in this case it was gonna be His daughter…Tamar
And that leads us to the next thing we see…
And that leads us to the next thing we see…
A Victim
A Victim
11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”
12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing.
Tamar could easily see how evil and disgraceful this was, but Amnon couldn’t because he’s blinded by his own desire…
13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”
v.13
She begins to plead with him…she says “don’t bring this shame on me…don’t bring this shame on the family”
She begins to plead with him…she says “don’t bring this shame on me…don’t bring this shame on the family”
And then says something that exposes a portion of David relationship with Amnon…and here it is - “please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” - He had developed a reputation of not knowing how to say “No” to his son
And then says something that exposes a portion of David relationship with Amnon…and here it is - He had developed a reputation of not knowing how to say “No” to his son
Now this is interesting because the Law prohibited marriages between half brothers and sisters () - I wonder if Tamar had seen David’s willingness to indulge his sons beyond what was acceptable to the Lord
Now this is interesting because the Law prohibited marriages between half brothers and sisters () - I wonder if Tamar had seen David’s willingness to indulge his sons beyond what was acceptable to the Lord
How do our kids becomes Ammon’s? Through practice and help…
How do our kids becomes Ammon’s? Through practice and help…
14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.
2 sam 13:1
This verb “Violated” means to “afflict, to humble, to break” and it’s used 4 times in these 32 verses to describe what happens to this beautiful virtuous young lady…and these actions came from the guy who said in (v.4) I love Tamar
But what Amnon felt was the furthest ting form love…because the love a whole different way
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
By that definition we see that Amnon didn’t love Tamar…He loved himself…He insisted upon his own way even if that meant that she would be “afflicted, humbled, broken”
By that definition we see that Amnon didn’t love Tamar…He loved himself…He insisted upon his own way even if that meant that she would be “afflicted, humbled, broken”
App: Just remember young ladies: Love is not just a word…It’s an action and just because a says he loves you doesn’t mean he does…He’ll show it through his cure for your well being and your purity
If he cars more about his satisfaction then your purity, your gonna have issues in the future, because right now you might be the object of his desire, but it might not always be like that…If you can get out now, Get out now
If he cars more about his satisfaction then your purity, your gonna have issues in the future, because right now you might be the object of his desire, but it might not always be like that…If you can get out now, Get out now
Fathers…show your daughters how special they are
Fathers…show your daughters how special they are
Not just by how you treat them… But by how you treat their moms…
Not just by how you treat them… But by how you treat their moms…
2 sAM 13:
15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!”
16 But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her.
17 He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.”
18 Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves, for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her.
This Guy…Lust will always make way for disgust
This evil of sending me away is worse than the other that you did to me: What Amnon did to Tamar was wrong, but he could still somewhat redeem the situation by either marrying her or paying her bride-price in accordance with and . The payment was meant to compensate for the fact that Tamar was now less likely to be married because she was no longer a virgin

She changed her robe: The idea behind the Hebrew phrase is that it was a robe extending all the way down to the wrists and ankles, as opposed to a shorter one. It was a garment of privilege and status, showing the person did not have to work much….all of this meant her future had been dramatically changed because of what her brother did.

But we see something about Tamar that reflects her strentgh
19 And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went.
20 And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house.
2 SAM 13:
Tamar correctly treated this as a calamity and did not hide the truth that a terrible crime was committed against her. She did not give place to the voice of shame saying, “This was somehow your fault.” she was willing to speak up about the abuse
App: Don't let shame keep you keep you quite about abuse…
Here we see the final eliminate to this issue
A Parent
A Parent
2 sam 13:
21 When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.
22 But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar.
David’s reaction was right…but his reaction was weak…his action was followed by inaction…he didn’t do anything to protect Tamar and he didn’t do anything to correct Amnon…and he did nether…
Why?
Why?
Well the Septuagint adds “He was angry but would not punish him because he he was his first born”
Well the Septuagint adds “He was angry but would not punish him because he he was his first born”
But i think it was because David didn’t think he had the moral authority to correct his Son
But i think it was because David didn’t think he had the moral authority to correct his Son
App: See satan wants you to think that you have no right to speak on a moral issue because you’ve failed yourself…which is not true…because we’re not speaking out of our own experiences but rather out of the truth of God’s word

Not only do we have the right…but we have the responsibility

And what we’re gonna look at next week…because he wouldn’t handle it God’s way…His son would handle it in a Godless way`
And what we’re gonna look at next week…because he wouldn’t handle it God’s way…His son would handle it in a Godless way`
Conclusion
So in this account so far we’ve seen four types of people...
A slave
A wicked counselor
A Victim
A Failing Parent
All of these types of people are found in here today...All of them provide questions
The slave says “Who can set me free?”
The one who receives wicked counsel says “Who can I trust for good counsel?”
The Victim says “Who can heal these scars?”
The one who’s been let down by their parents says “Who can I look to father me?”
Jesus is the answer to all those questions:
To the slave Jesus says “If the Son sets you free you will be free indeed”
To the those needing wise counsel Jesus says “I am the light of the word those who follow me will not walk in darkness
To the victim Jesus says
Luke 4:1
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
To the Fatherless Jesus says “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden…take my yoke upon you and learn from me…for I am gentle and lowly of heart and you will receive rest for your soul”
When it comes to sin…There may be restoration…but there will be repercussions
When it comes to sin…There may be restoration…but there will be repercussions
David’s sinful decision negatively effected his family…his witness…and his voice...It doesn’t mean you can’t come back from it…it will just be more difficultIy
It doesn’t mean you can’t come back from it…it will just be more difficultI pray that that would haunt us as an sobering warning about sin
Pray that this would haunt us as an sobering warning about sin
If your a Victim of rape…Don’t let the shame silence you
If your a Victim of rape…Don’t let the shame silence you
