19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Introduction
Introduction
Last week we focused on verses 17 and 18 where we saw that Jesus, in answering His critics who were opposed to Him healing a man on the Sabbath, He spoke of the work given to Him by the Father.
That work we saw was 2 fold.
First, in ,
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
ESV21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
The work of the Father raising people from the dead was given to the Son to give life to whom He wills.Second, in ,
The work of the Father raising people from the dead was given to the Son to give life to whom He wills.
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Second, in ,
22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
ESV22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
Jesus in the incarnation would be humiliated, but after being resurrected, He was exalted to the highest place. And in the resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous, He will judge. Giving life and bringing judgement on everyone is the work of the Son which was revealed in the incarnation and completed in His exaltation. As a man Jesus was sinless and without sin. He never broke the law. Proving His divinity. We also have to keep in mind that Jesus is “Lord of the Sabbath,” and He was not limited by their interpretations of what was not allowed. The Hebrews believed that God was constantly working when sustaining all of Creation which meant that God was continually working. Even on the Sabbath. So the fact that Jesus claimed the same work as the Father is a direct acknowledgement of His deity. What is amazing is how there is equality with the Father yet humility and obedience in His incarnation. The passage before us today highlights the Son’s obedience and His equality with the Father.
Jesus in the incarnation would be humiliated and humbled, but after being resurrected, He was exalted to the highest place.
And in the resurrection of both the just and the unjust (), He will judge.
Giving life and bringing judgement on everyone is the work of the Son which was revealed in the incarnation and completed in His exaltation.
As a man, Jesus was sinless and without sin. He never broke the law. Proving His divinity.
We also have to keep in mind that Jesus is “Lord of the Sabbath,” and He was not limited by their interpretations of what was not allowed.
Especially because their interpretations came from their traditions.
The passage before us today highlights the Son’s obedience, His equality with the Father and His role in the judgement of all people.

1. The Obedience of the Son (v.19-23)
Verse 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
Verse 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
Notice Jesus saying to them truly truly.
The gospel of John records Jesus saying this 51 times.
It can actually read, Surely, Surely. Meaning pay attention to what I am about to say.
This was used as an urgent call to what was being said.
Jesus wanted His listeners to pay close attention. His listeners being the Jewish leaders from the prior passage.
He brings attention to the following:
“The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.”
1. The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing.
1. The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing.
Here we see clearly that the Son cannot do anything on His own accord
The word accord is not found in the greek
English Standard Version Chapter 5
the Son can do nothing of his
It can be read, “the Son can do nothing of himself” meaning that everything done by Him is not without dependency on the Father
The Son cannot act outside of submission to the Father
The Son can do nothing by Himself but only what the Father does
Notice that it doesn’t say here or anywhere in Scripture that the Father can do nothing of His accord or only what He sees the Son doing
This shows us that they have distinct roles
Their Father-Son relationship is not reciprocal; Scripture never says that the Father does only what he sees the Son doing.
The Father sends, commands and honors the Son
They have distinct roles: the Father initiates, sends, commands, commissions, grants; the Son responds, obeys, performs his Father’s will, receives authority. The Son is the Father’s agent, though much more than an agent.
The Son obeys and puts the Father’s will before His own and the Son receives authority from the Father
In the following verses we see the reasons as to why the Son obeys the Father.
The First
The word “for” is an important word.
It is used as a function word to indicate purpose. It indicates an intended goal. And we see this in the following verses.
It is used as a function word to indicate purpose. It indicates an intended goal. And we see this in the following verses.
It is used as a function word to indicate purpose. It indicates an intended goal. And we see this starting in the second half of verse 19.
The first reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Son does what the Father does.
The first reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Son does what the Father does.
First, in verse 19b, we see that the Son does what the Father does.
First, in verse 19b, we see that the Son does what the Father does.
For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.”
Verse 19b For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
So the reason Jesus did everything He did is because that is what the Father was doing.
Example: The Father in loving the us gave His only Son, so the Son because the Father loved us, Would love us.
This is a good example for us.
Our obedience cannot come from human wisdom or worldly sources.
We can learn from common grace but our obedience must be learned by the work of God in Christ.
we cannot learn obedience outside of what God has shown us in Scripture.
We can gain knowledge and understanding of things from common grace but we can never learn obedience outside of Christ.
Whatever the Father did, that the Son did likewise. We must do the same. It is the pattern given to us for our obedience.
Our God’s love for us produces a love for Him. And a love for Him must produce obedience.
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
We cannot do this perfectly like Jesus but it is what we are to strive for everyday! To do what God wants us to do!
The second reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Father loves the Son.
The second reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Father loves the Son.
Second,
Second,
Verse 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
Verse 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
Jesus’ role is not dependent on our love for Him.
It is the Father’s love that shows Jesus all that He Himself is to do.
Remember ?
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
19 We love because he first loved us.
Because the Father loves the Son, He shows Him all things!
So everything the Father shows the Son, the Son does with absolute perfection.
The love that the Father has for the Son is given to us!
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
The Father loving the Son would then make many sons and would love us perfectly with no wavering.
His love will endure forever on us because that is how the Father loves the Son.
This proves even more the perseverance of the Saints.
The Father will never stop loving the Son. And because He has granted fellowship to us by loving us because of the love He has for Son, how could God stop loving us if He will never stop loving the Son?
The love God has for us is not kept by us. It is kept by what the Son has done which was done with no sin and fault. It is completely what the Father wanted Him to do!
So it means that there is nothing that can separate us from His love because the work done to make this possible was done in the Son! Because He did exactly what the Father wanted Him to do! Which includes keeping us saved!
You salvation does not depend on you and your obedience! It is kept by the obedience of Christ!
The third reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Father raised the dead.
The third reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Father raised the dead.
Verse 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
Verse 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
Since the Son does all that the Father does it makes sense that since the Father raises the dead and gives them life that the Son would also do the same!
The Son gives life to whom He wills because the Father gives life.
That is why the “so also” in verse 21 us helpful.
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
Everyone who will be raised to life is raised because Jesus saw the Father giving life and the Father gives to Jesus those who would gain eternal life through faith in Him.
The fourth reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Father has given all judgement to the Son
The fourth reason as to why the Son obeys the Father is that the Father has given all judgement to the Son
Verse 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son
Verse 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son
Notice here a shift.
In verse 22 we see that the Father here is not doing something that the Son does.
Question: The Father judges no one. Why?
35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
Peter said in ,
ESV42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
The Father judges no one because He has given all judgement to the Son.
The reason why the Father did this is found in the next verse in verse 23.
Read verse 23.
Verse 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Verse 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
The purpose for the Father giving the role of judgement to the Son was so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.
Question: Do you now understand why they persecuted and wanted to kill Jesus?
They persecuted Him because:
16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
ESV16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
And they wanted to kill Him because:
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
ESV18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
A good question for those who deny the equality of Jesus and the Father would be this:
Question: Should Jesus be honored just as the Father is honored?
Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
If one does not honor the Son, just as the Father then they are not honoring the Father.
This is the implication from verse 23.
In giving the Son the role of judge all must honor Him.
In fact, in Philippians all will honor Him. Whether good or evil.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The Father in giving all to the Son because He loved Him, the Son’s obedience to the Father has given to us who were disobedient and lost eternal life! And judgement for our sins has already been made in our favor.
Instead of death we have been given life because of hearing and believing in the word of Christ!
This is the result of His perfect obedience to the Father’s will!
2. The Result of the Obedience of the Son (v.24)
2. The Result of the Obedience of the Son (v.24)
Verse 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
Verse 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
Again, Jesus wants His listeners to pay close attention to what He is saying!
In verse 19 He said,
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
In verse 19 He wanted them to pay close attention to His obedience to the Father.
Here in verse 24, He wants His listeners to pay close attention to the result of His obedience to the Father!
“whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”
Because the Son has perfectly obeyed the Father, those who hear and believe His word will have eternal life!
We who believe will not come into judgement. Meaning that we will not be condemned. We know this from the end of verse 24 where He says, “ but has passed from death to life.”
Pay attention to this Saints!
We no longer should live in fear of the judgement of God. We should live reverently and soberly but we are not coming into the judgement of God that will cast people out.
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
We have passed from death to live because of what God has done in Christ!
The judgement that has been made for the believer is that we have been declared righteous! We have been justified!
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
The obedience of the Son has brought to us reconciliation to the point of wrath being removed from us.
Judgement has been made for our salvation! We have been declared righteous!
So the judgement for the believer’s salvation has already been made!
The unbeliever however has much to worry about.
3. The judgement by the Son (v.25-29)
3. The judgement by the Son (v.25-29)
Verse 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
Verse 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
Again, Jesus wants His listers to pay close attention to what He is about to say.
In verse 19 He said,
In verse 19 He said,
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
In verse 19, He wanted them to pay close attention to His obedience to the Father.
In verse 24, He said,
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
Here He wanted His listeners to pay close attention to the result of His obedience to the Father!
And now in verse 25 He says,
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
He wanted His listeners here to pay close attention to the truth of the dead hearing His voice and living.
And the reason is found in verse 26.
26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
Verse 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
Verse 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
This is why Jesus by His word gives life to those that are dead!
It is because in Jesus there is life just as the Father has life in Himself!
Our Savior is life!
The Son’s obedience made it possible for us to live!
Jesus came into the world to save it not condemn it.
He has life in Himself and to those who hear and believe, they will live!
All because of the work done by the Son by the Father in revealing all things to Him!
This unfolds for us the triune work for our redemption!
The work of salvation is given to those who have faith but to those apart from saving faith, Jesus will execute judgement that will cast them out.
Verse 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
Verse 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
The judgement Jesus does is a divine judgement and role that only God can have!
Calling Himself the Son of Man was intentional.
In Daniel 7:13-14,
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
The Son was given authority to execute judgement because He is the One who would come in with the clouds!
Daniel 17:13-14
To him was given:
dominion
glory
a kingdom
peoples
that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
nations
languages
that all should serve him
He has dominion
an everlasting dominion
which shall not pass away
and his kingdom is one that shall not be destroyed
All of which was given to the Son by the Father!
Which shouldn’t bring confusion but clarity to who Jesus is.
In fact, when Jesus said do not marvel in verse 28, He was telling them not to be astonished!
28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Verse 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
Verse 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
Verse 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Verse 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Verse 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Verse 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Don’t marvel or be astonished at the authority given to the Son. This is supposed to happen because Jesus is who He said He was!
Verse 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Verse 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
To those who have done good to the resurrection of life.
And those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Question: Where are you here today?
