Title: What you call this sermon
-Reveals Intent
-Builds Suspense
-Attracts Attention
Text: Habakkuk 3:1-19
Text driven preaching. The meaning drives content. Read the text, explain the text, and apply the text. (BIBLE)
Conversation no longer is how can I get out of this to what can I get out of this.
1. Doctrinal Theme: Prayer of Faith and God’s justice for salvation.
...Also, Fallen Condition Focus (FCF): Our prayer often stops at the request for answers or for some thing in particular. However, the fullness of a relationship is an acknowledgement of who you are talking to, an understanding of what they’ve done, and where you stand with that person.
2. Point (The Big Idea): Sermon in one sentence.
… “God will enact justice in us and around us.”
. . .“Prayer aligns our heart with God’s heart so we might stand in the will of GOd.”
… “God’s wrath and judgement is for our salvation.”
the fear of the Lord And then His ways are higher than ours.
This is the product of an authentic relationship with God.
3. Objectives: What are you trying do to these people with this sermon? 3 Goals you want to drive home. 1. What do you want them to think? 2. What will they learn that they hadn't? 3. What do you want them to believe? How does this enhance our faith in God, obedience in Jesus, and submission to the Holy Spirit? What do you want people to do? How do we live out the teachings of our faith? (Application/Devotional Commentaries/Bible)
3b. Transitional Sentence: Clarity, unity, and movement is caused by this. Most accidents happen when we don't transition well. It will seem disjointed and there won't be a flows. Keep "things" out of your transition. Strive for clarity and movement. "Here are four dynamics of a Spirit Filled life." (Application/Devotional Commentaries/Bible)
4. Outline:
VS 1-2: Petition the Lord (Fear of the Lord)
a). Bring Life (We should ask God to bring salvation but do we?)
b). Bring Understanding (God does give understanding but we don’t always want His response.)
c). Be Merciful (In the middle of God brining about justice the prophet still asks for mercy. Is this the way we handle our enemies or the ones we oppose?)
VS 3-15: See the Lord
a). 3-5 The Lord is present (He isn’t and has never be far)
b). 6-12 The Lord is active (Enacts Justice and Wrath)
c). 13-15 The Lord is saving (Gospel Hook)
VS 16-19: Believe (Trust, embrace, rejoice in, be strengthened by) the Lord (We get to be sure footed)
I wanted peace in my circumstances instead I got a piece of God.
There is a time and place to pray different. This is such a relational text.
Take the language of vs 17 and change it to Nebraska and the US.
NOTES: This is probably the hardest part of seeking the Lord, waiting. What we seek isn’t always right in front of us. And what seems like a simple fix or answer isn’t always what happens or what God chooses to use.
b). 18-19 Embrace God (For our joy, strength, and steadfastness).
NOTES: Where else will we go? We can’t find joy here. We can’t find strength here. What do people without faith go to when disaster strikes. It doesn’t mean we are inactive. It means we actively purse the Lord for answers.
Sub-points: Don't use them if they are not necessary. Don't force them if they are not there.

5. Sermon Synopsis. Start filling in the gaps in this skeleton: Intro, explanation, application(Gospel Implications: How does the grace of Jesus in the gospel help us to live out the teaching of this text?), illustration, conclusion. Pare this down to simple notes you can take to the pulpit. (Exegetical Commentaries, Illustrations, Outlines, Word Study)
