3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

This first recorded act of deceit is all about denying God’s judgment

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die

The serpent used the ambiguous wording of the penalty of disobedience
to pose a question
to cause skepticism to fall upon Eve
to embolden her pride and doubt through skeptical contemplation of God’s Word
to bring the authority upon herself of subjective interpretation
rather than to follow God without question in matters unknown
she stopped trusting God
and trusted her own judgment
to peril, and to death
this was the tool the enemy used to cause her to follow his solicitation

The serpent uses the ambiguity of the penalty’s wording to make the woman less fearful and more apt to follow his solicitation

grammatically

Ye will by no means die” (לֹא is placed before the infinitive absolute

the meaning is not, “he will not die;” but, ye will positively not die

assure her of perfect impunity

“You will not surely die”
The New American Commentary: Genesis 1–11:26 (1) The Serpent and the Woman (3:1–5)

With the woman lured into dialogue on his terms, the serpent directly disputes God’s command

The serpent is assuring Eve falsely that she will not be punished

assure her of perfect impunity

The New American Commentary: Genesis 1–11:26 (1) The Serpent and the Woman (3:1–5)

With the woman lured into dialogue on his terms, the serpent directly disputes God’s command

Genesis: An Introduction and Commentary Man’s Fall and Expulsion (3:1–24)

It is the serpent’s word against God’s

Genesis: An Introduction and Commentary Man’s Fall and Expulsion (3:1–24)

the first doctrine to be denied is judgment

he puts forth a flat contradiction to the Word of God
“Ye shall not surely die”
Genesis: An Introduction and Commentary Man’s Fall and Expulsion (3:1–24)

the flat contradiction: Ye shall not surely die

We see this today, and regardless of the modern motivations,
Genesis: An Introduction and Commentary Man’s Fall and Expulsion (3:1–24)

If modern denials of it are very differently motivated, they are equally at odds with revelation

the idea that wrath doesn’t exist is against what God clearly says
Is it sin? Is it sin? We ask this about so many things....
Is it sin?
and then
If they answer is yes, we then move on to question the consequence
surely God will not punish me
surely God will not cast me away
surely God has left some gray area
some loophole
to allow me to sin freely...
it must be grace! I am covered by grace...
but no! The apostle paul says in Romans 6:1

6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid.

God forbid!!!!
if the apostle Paul doesn’t possess the authority that satisfies your questions
if his words aren’t enough to convict you in your desires of the flesh
what about the words of Jesus?
Genesis: An Introduction and Commentary Man’s Fall and Expulsion (3:1–24)

Jesus fully reaffirmed the doctrine

Jesus says in Matthew 7:13

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

depart from me....
I never knew you
the most terrifying words conceivable
that’s not what the liar says
the liar, the serpent gives another answer to our sin
The serpent denies that there is any danger in disobedience,
no repercussions,
no judgment
Even though the deceiver is now recognizing sin is directly breaking a commandment

though it might be the transgressing of a precept

He is now trying to say there will be no penalty
He’s a liar!!!!
and his lies are murder
JOHN 8:44

He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

it would not be the incurring of a penalty

He lies when he says

Ye shall not surely die:

this is of course

in direct contradiction to what God had said

but in our fallen state
our love of flesh and fleshly desire
we ignore God and follow the enemy straight to hell
JOHN

45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

God clearly says

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die

look at the contradiction

thou shalt surely die

Ye shall not surely die

It really can’t get more disobedient and contradictory
because the enemy is a deceiver and he is weak

Satan endeavours to shake that which he cannot overthrow

He knows that he is no match for the Almighty Creator
he has already been punished for his own rebellion
so, he tries to take away the force of God’s Divine threatenings
by questioning the certainty of them

and invalidates the force of divine threatenings by questioning the certainty of them

he does this to this very day
once the shadow of doubt is cast upon any Word of God, positing a falsehood or a fallacy
the door has been opened to downright infidelity
to sin
to pride
lust, greed, unnatural desires, hatred, adultery, murrrrrderr

once it is supposed possible that there may be falsehood or fallacy in any word of God, a door is then opened to downright infidelity

he makes them sceptics first, and so by degrees makes them atheists

step by step, the character of God is chipped away at
by lie after lie after lie
until we are left in a sea of doubt and dispair
denying our Loving Father
our Sovereign King
our Almighty God
Deceitful in his tactics and appropriating the very language of God,
he states his contradiction with the same phrase of assurance that God used in his threat
and to be clear here, God’s threats are not empty
nor are they selfish forms of egotistical hatred towards mankind
they are warnings
strict warnings of love designed to save our eternal souls
from the lake of fire, the punishment for our disobedience
God warns us with the threat of consequence
while we are tempted, we reserve the decision to be obedient
or to follow the deceiver into disobedient rebellion
at our own peril

He avers his contradiction with the same phrase of assurance that God had used in ratifying the threatening

the liar, that devil, the satan, twists God’s mighty Words into the lie

Ye shall not surely die

We know that he first called the commandment into question, asking Eve

“Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

and when he perceived her understanding of the precept

He began to call the precept in question (v. 1), but, finding that the woman adhered to that, he quitted that

even though her answer lacked the recognition of the loving provision granted by the Father
to eat the fruits of “any” tree “freely” save the one
the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil
when he perceived her understanding of the commandment couldn’t be shaken
the coward, in his wicked and wise ways
made his second onset upon the threatened consequence

and made his second onset upon the threatening

his wisdom drew alert to the fact that Eve lacked a full understanding based on her response
when she said “lest you die” rather than
“you will SURELY die”
that serpent spied his opening
the opening in her weakness
and as any effective onslaught, he struck right at the chink in the armor
at the weak spot in the wall of her will
he saw her waver and claimed

where he perceived her to waver; for he is quick to spy all advantages, and to attack the wall where it is weakest

Ye shall not surely die

[1.] It was contrary to the word of God, which we are sure is true

it was such a heinous lie
such a measure of deceit
that within the lie
Satan painted God himself as a liar...

It was such a lie as gave the lie to God himself

Satan knew that God’s wrath was real
Satan knew that disobedience brought upon God’s wrath
Satan knew the pain and suffering of being cast down
away from God
He knew the truth and in his misery, he lied

When he told them there was no danger in disobedience and rebellion he said that which he knew, by woeful experience, to be false

He had broken the law of his creation, and had found, to his cost, that he could not prosper in it

yet he tells our first parents they shall not die

He concealed his own misery, that he might draw them into the like

misery loves company
and the devil is the most miserable creature of all eternity
and even today he deceives sinners into their own ruin
bringing the wrath of God upon themselves
to dwell in misery with the devil

thus he still deceives sinners into their own ruin

He tells them that, though they sin, they shall not die

yet God tells us, once again very clearly,
that the wages of sin is death

God, who tells them, The wages of sin is death

the false hope that punishment isn’t real
that God’s wrath isn’t real
that God does not hate sin
is the doorway to sin
is the doorway to all iniquity
and the doorway to a complete lack of impenitence
Deuteronomy warns

Hope of impunity is a great support to all iniquity, and impenitency in it

Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, 19 one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.

we have fallen so far that we are on autopilot
the enemy no longer has to work on us
because our flesh draws us to sin like a moth to a flame
to fiery destruction
propelled by our own wings of death
but....
In Jesus, we have hope
because even though
ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God
and we know that
the wages of sin is death
God so loves us that

John
JOHN 8
John 8 ESV
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” As he was saying these things, many believed in him. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
