Introduction

We are going to spend of dew weeks on some basic Beliefs
We Believe the Virgin Birth actually happened
We Believe the Bible is true
We Believe The Bible is true
We Believe in the substitutionary atonement of Christ
2 Timothy 3:10–17 CSB
10 But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance, 11 along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured—and yet the Lord rescued me from them all. 12 In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, 15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
We Believe in the substitutinary atonement of Christ
We believe in the bodily resurrection of Christ
We believe in the bodely reserection of Christ
This morning we are going to observe the virgin birth
The virgin Birth is an esential doctorine, because if Christ was conceived any other way he would have had a sin nature.
Matthew 1:18–25 NKJV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
Matthew 5:18 ESV
18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

I. The act of conception (v. 18)

Matthew 1:18 KJV 1900
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
This verse alone should be enough for us to understand that the Virgin Birth was true.
Merry Was espoused to Joseph
Merry Was espoused to Joseph
This is not the same as todays engagement
This is not the same as todays engagement
Think of it as engagement on steroids
Thnk of it as engagment on steroids
The word here is betrothing
Matthew 1:18 NKJV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
the NKJV and the ESV are the onle two newer versions that translate it proporly, every other version translates it engaged.
So What does it mean to be Betrothed or engaged in these times?
The word here is betroth
So What does it mean to be Betrothed or engaged in theese times?
During the engagement period, which took place before betrothel the young woman could break the agreement if she was unwilling to marry the man.
Conversely, the man could break off the engagement if the woman had not kept her virginity.
However, once they entered betrothal (which lasted one year), it was absolutely binding.
During that year, although they didn’t live together or sleep together, the couple was actually known as “husband and wife.” This explains why Joseph in our text is called Mary’s “husband” in verse 19
-It was a legal binding contract for marriage
-It was a leagle binding contract for mariage
It was a legal binding contract for marriage
-During this time the man would be preparing his house at which time it was ready he would without warning retrieve his Bride for the marriage.
During this time the man would be preparing his house at which time it was ready he would without warning retrieve his Bride for the marriage.
-This is why we have the Picture of Christ as the bridegroom returning without warning and we need to be ready

at this time Merry would have been 13-14 and Joseph’s age is not known for sure but sources range form 30 all the way to age 90

Before they had come together

before they had consummated their marriage merry was found to be with Child
Before they had come together
-before they had consemated there marriage merry was found to be with Child
She was found with Child of the Holy Ghost
This does not mean she had intercourse with the holy Ghost.
-This does not mean she had intercouse with the holy Ghost.
Christ simply was placed in marry, any other way she could not have been a virgin and the Bible clearly teaches that she was.

ii. Joseph’s initial responce (v. 19)

Put yourself in Joseph’s shoes right now. Mary was the woman whom he agreed to love, the woman who was to have his children and to nurture and teach them.
Mary was the woman who was going to manage his household. And she was found out! She was found to be with child, and thus (apparently) with the stain of sexual sin.
Shure, she had told him that what she had was of the holy spirit and she was a virgin, but would you honestly Believe that?

Joseph knew that this baby was not his, He had not touched Merry Therefore this could only mean that somebody else had.
Joseph knew that this baby was not his, He had not touched Merry Therefore this could only mean that somebody else had.
So, place yourself in his shoes how would you feel how would you react
Joseph knew that this baby was not his, He had not touched Merry Therfore this could only mean that somebody else had.
So place yourself in his shoes how would you feal how would you react
Matthew 1:19 KJV 1900
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
Remember the legal contract that betrothal was
She was for all legal purposes his wife and therefore she had, as it appears committed adultery
She was for all leagl puropeses his wife and therfore she had, as it apears committed adultery
Adultery in the Ot law
Adultery in the Ot law
Leviticus 20:10 ESV
10 “If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
liv 20:10
The cultural practice would have been to drag her to the town center have her publicly shamed then stoned until she was dead.
That was the law, and Joseph would have had no blood on his hands doing such.
That was the law, and Joseph would have had no blood on his hands doing such.
but notice what he decides
but notice what he decides
divorce her quietly
he decided to divorce her quietly
again, in the OT law he could write her a certificate of divorce allowing her to go to this other man so that no shame would come upon her or her family
He was a just man
-he decided to divorce her quietly
meaning a man characterized my a since of morality and justice.
-again in the OT law he could write her a cirtificate of divorce alowing her to go to this other man so that no shame would come upon her or her family
He didn’t want justice for himself, he cared for marry and her family and did not want any harm to come to them
He was a just man
-meaning a man charcterized my a since of morality and justice.
-He didn’t want justice for himself, he cared for marry and her family and did not want any harm to come to them

III. The angel to Joseph (20-23)

So while Joseph is thinking over all this an angel appears to Him
III. The angel to Joseph (20-23)
Matthew 1:20–23 ESV
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Matt
One of the angels came to Joseph in a dream to inform him of Jesus’ conception

another proof of the trinity Jesus was and is God the second member of the trinity

IV. Joseph’s responce (24-25)

Matthew 1:24–25 ESV
24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
When Joseph awoke, He took Merry to Be His wife, this was in all likelihood an immediate action. He immediately took her into his house hold
Knew her not
Knew her not
This is not talking about not knowing who she was.
I think most of us understand what this is referring to

Application
The virgin Birth actually happed and anyone who tells you otherwise is a false teacher trying to destroy the deity of Christ.
