In Church, but no relationship with Jesus.

It’s a heart problem.

Mark 7:1-23
Mark 7:1-23
Mark 7:1–23 NASB95
1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, 2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders; 4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.) 5 The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?” 6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 7 But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ 8 “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” 9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10 “For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” 14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. 16 “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?” (Thus He declared all foods clean.) 20 And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. 23 “All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
Intro: Can someone go to church and not be saved? This means that when they die they will not have eternal life in heaven, but spend eternity in hell.
Matthew 7:21–23 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
The story today involves the Scribes and the Pharisees. The religious leaders. They talked a lot about God, they did a lot of church stuff. But they did not have a relationship with God.
Matthew
Mark 7:1–5 KJV 1900
1 Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. 2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. 3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. 4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. 5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
Mark 7:1-
The Scribes and the Pharisees had come from Jerusalem to Capernaum to seek out Jesus. Not because they thought he was a great speaker and wanted to hear Him preach. Not seeking some kind of healing. Not to proclaim Him as the Messiah. They did not come to worship Him.
a. Their reason to come see Jesus was to find something that they could accuse Him, to find fault with Him. Something they had been doing.
b. When the 4 men lowered their friend down into the house were Jesus was teaching, and forgive the man of His sins. (They were thinking, only God can forgive sins)
Mark 2:8–11 NASB95
8 Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? 9 “Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? 10 “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.”
Mark 2:8–11 KJV 1900
8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? 9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? 10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) 11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
Mark 2:8-
c. This made them mad.
2. Then when Jesus cast out the demon from a man, they called him the devil.
2. Then when Jesus cast out the demon from a man, they called him the devil.
b. Jesus called Matthew (Levi) and went to his house to eat. They asked his disciples, why is He eating with sinners.
3. When His disciples picked grain on the Sabbath.
(People who are not Christians will look for reason to find fault with Christians, with churches)
4. Now His disciples did not wash their hands the way the law said.
a. Washing of hands had nothing to do with hygiene. It was a matter of a religious ceremony.
(Pouring water down the arms with raised arms and a fist)
b. This a manmade law that the, and they were strict when it came to the law. So this their plan. You would think they would learn their lesson. They would accuse Jesus, they would question Jesus, it never worked.
5. So, we know why these men came to came to see Jesus. Why do you come to church?
a. Some reason people go to church.
Bad reasons people go to church?
1. Trying to find a spouse.
1. So you are able to call yourself a Christian.
We see this with politicians.
Many people go to church to sooth their religious conscience not knowing they’re on their way to hell. They never repented and believed on Jesus Christ, but instead say, “I go to church every Sunday so I’m saved. God would not throw me into hell.”

Mat. There will be many in that day.
2. So you can look religious to your family and friends.
Matthew 23:28 NASB95
28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matthew 23:28 NASB95
28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
3. To sing in the choir or play instruments.
All music should be to glorify God. (TJ)
4. To justify your sin.
Churches all around the world and especially in America are turning away from the truth. They are throwing away their Bibles and teaching things that are not to be taught.
Repentance is not being taught in many pulpits, thus producing a defective gospel and with a defective gospel comes false converts.
and with a defective gospel comes false converts. People will go to an unbiblica
Matthew 3:2 NASB95
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 3:2 NASB95
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Repent: Is to turn in the opposite direction.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

People will go to an unbiblical church because the pastor not only doesn’t preach on sin, but he says it’s OK. Fake Christians don’t want to be convicted of sin, but want to hear things that sooth their ears.

5. I’m trying to get right with the Lord.
People try to work their way to get right with God. Trying on their own to receive righteousness.
Isaiah 64:6 NASB95
6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
Isaiah 64:6 KJV 1900
6 But we are all as an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; And we all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Isaiah
1. When it came to these men that Jesus was dealing with, it was a tradition, it was about what was right in mans eye not Gods.
Jesus answers them.
Mark 7:6–13 KJV 1900
6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

Our focus VS is verse 6. One word “Hypocrites”.
Hypocrite: A play actor. Someone who pretended to be something that they were not.
a.
When Jesus uses this word, it is always against the Scribes and Pharisees.
Matthew 6:2 NASB95
2 “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
Matth
Matthew 6:2 NASB95
2 “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
1. So here Jesus called them hypocrites because they wanted to be sure that everyone knew what they did.
2. In (HW) 7 times Jesus says “Woe unto to you” A primary exclamation of grief;
a. Something we here today as an excuse for people to not come to church. “There a bunch of hypocrites in the church”
b. Most people don’t really understand the meaning of a hypocrite. People look at a hypocrite as Christian that does bad things.
c. But what a hypocrite in church really is, is a person that acts like a Christian that really isn’t one. (Ms Jackie)
I believe so many times they think that they are saved but are not.
d. This means there are people, church members that need to give their lives to Jesus. People who may have been baptized, but have never been saved.
Mark 7:6 KJV 1900
6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
It is written:
Isaiah 29:13 KJV 1900
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, And with their lips do honour me, But have removed their heart far from me, And their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
Isaiah
Isaiah 29:13 KJV 1900
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, And with their lips do honour me, But have removed their heart far from me, And their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
They did not believe that Jesus was God. (That is how they would would put Him to death)
a. They did not believe that He was the Messiah.
b. They did believe in God, and claimed to honor God. At least with their lips, but their actions did not show it.
Mark 7:14–23 KJV 1900
14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. 16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. 18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? 20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
VS 14-15 Jesus calls all the people to Him. He says lesson and understand what I have to say.
Mark
Mark 7:15 NASB95
15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.
Going back to the washing of the hands. They accused the disciples of eating with unclean hands. What Jesus saying is, its not what goes into a man’s body that defiles him, but what comes out. “What comes out of him” VS 15 means, what comes out of his mouth.
a. He was talking about the Scribes and Pharisees. They talked about God, but there was no truth in what they said because there was no truth in them.
a.
Now Jesus is talking to His disciples. They are in a house, and they ask about what Jesus has just said.
b. He was talking about the Scribes and Pharisees. They talked about God, but there was no truth in what they said because there was no truth in them.
Wuest, K. S. (1961). The New Testament: an expanded translation (). Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans.
Mark 7:6 NASB95
6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.
2. The problems with them was a heart problem. We see what Jesus said in VS 6
Mark 7:
Mark 7:21–23 NASB95
21 “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. 23 “All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
Here is long list of actions, sinful actions. These men Jesus was dealing with were sinners, JTB had preached repentance, Jesus preached repentance.
a. Who else needed to repent, the disciples Jesus was talking to.
b. Everyone He preached to.
c. Ever born again believe had to repent.
d. If you have never repented, you are not a Christian.
