(Introduction:) Tyre was a port city (of merchandise)
Busiest port
Modern Day Lebanon
Established by the Phoenicians (28 centuries before time of Christ - ancient (v. 7))
Two urban centers: mainland and island - King Hiram connected them
Trading with Tyre was extensive ()
Who was really in charge? remind us that Satan is in charge and these kings were merely puppets.
The connection with Tyre and Satan is seen in the pride.

(1) Tyre was a proud city that would be punished (v. 1 - 6)

Ezekiel 28:1–5 KJV 1900
The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying, Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord God; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God: Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee: With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures: By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
Satan is able to bring economic success which leads to pride, which warrants judgment from God.
(v. 1) Cyprus sends word to the ships coming from Tarshish - that Tyre has been destroyed.
(v. 2) The merchants of the sea have cause for mourning as they hear the news; Sidon shares the same fate as Tyre.
(v. 3 - 5) Egypt hears the news
Nebuchadnezzar would destroy the land city of Tyre
Ezekiel 26:8 KJV 1900
He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the buckler against thee.

(2) Tyre would be a punished city by divine planning (v. 7 - 14)

(v. 7 - 9) It was the LORD who planned it
(v. 7) she will go into captivity
(v. 8) economic success is insufficient before the judgment of God
(*) Application: The LORD is supreme over all kingdoms (v. 11)
He will keep his promises - He preserved his covenant to Israel in spite of enemy nations.
He is just in His judgments
His intention in judgments is the prove his supremacy.
(v. 9) This judgement was due to their pride
Pride due to riches
Pride that led to a heart against God’s people in Jerusalem ()
Ezekiel 26:3 KJV 1900
Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.
(*) The LORD hates pride -
Proverbs 8:13 KJV 1900
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the froward mouth, do I hate.
Pride that is rooted in economic success (as a country, as a family, or as an individual)
Pride that is fundamentally rooted in hatred for the Divine authority of God.
Pride is why we trust in ourselves. Pride is why we deny God the trust that He deserves.
(v. 10) This judgment was a testimony to other nations
(v. 11) This judgment reveals God’s supremacy over the nations/kingdoms
This judgment was with intention that they would know the LORD God. ()
Ezekiel 28:20–24 KJV 1900
Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it, And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her. For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the Lord. And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord God.

(3) Tyre would be a privileged city (spiritually) (v. 15 - 18)

There is a fulfillment in the future where similar terminology is used in
Revelation 18:11–13 KJV 1900
And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; For no man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, And precious stones, and of pearls, And fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, And all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, And all manner vessels of most precious wood, And of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, And ointments, and frankincense, And wine, and oil, And fine flour, and wheat, And beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, And slaves, and souls of men.
Though the city is not Tyre, the similarities cannot be overlooked.
The King of Tyre = Satan
A lot of merchandise/economy
A destruction of this city
Riches will come to nought
Revelation 18:17 KJV 1900
For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, And sailors, and as many as trade by sea, Stood afar off,
(3) Tyre would be a privileged city (spiritually) (v. 15 - 18)
Restoration was prophesied
While Babylon did take the land city, rebuilding did happen until the time of Alexander the Great when he removed everything from Tyre - it would not be rebuilt again.

(a) Jesus Christ cared about those in Tyre/Sidon -
Restoration was commenced
(b) There were Christians in Tyre/Sidon in the 1st Century -
Restoration was developing in 1st Century
Application:
We thus conclude that Tyre was a place of materialism, economic success (trusted in), covetousness, greed…etc They stood against God’s people. More importantly, they stood against the LORD.
This base nature of man is that man is easily swayed into living for things. Man has a covetous bent by nature. Consider the words of Christ in
He will keep his promises - He preserved his covenant to Israel in spite of enemy nations.
He is just in His judgments
Luke 12:15 KJV 1900
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
His intention in judgments is the prove his supremacy.
It is this Jesus Christ who lived the life of perfect self-denial. When tempted with the kingdoms of this world, Jesus Christ refused the offer of Satan.
Proverbs 8:13 KJV 1900
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the froward mouth, do I hate.
Pride that is rooted in economic success (as a country, as a family, or as an individual)

Pride is why we trust in ourselves. Pride is why we deny God the trust that He deserves.
(3) The LORD punishes the sin of covetousness (materialism)
(*) Unbeliever, you may be distracted by the pursuit of bigger toys, more money, more comfortable living; but be warned, this life will end! All of those material things will belong to someone else one day or be in a garbage heap. If you will be delivered from your sin, you must confess Jesus Christ as your Lord.
(*) What applications are there for Christians?
(1) Christian, recognize that you take the root of covetousness with you everywhere -
(2) Christian, remember that you have been set free from the power of covetousness & materialism - ,
(3) Christian, remember that your inheritance if far greater than any material possessions in this world - ,
Practically:

(1) Live generously -

(a) necessity of the saints -
(b) neighborliness (missional) -
Some have the idea that if you give your tithe, you have done your duty so the rest belongs to you.
Take other believers out
By each other thoughtful gifts
Faithfully contribute to the spread of the gospel worldwide

(2) Live contently -

(a) godliness -
this is godly living that results from a godly standing
you can enjoy all things but not if you are greedy
(b) distributing -
Some have undertaken such a pursuit of material things that they have to earn the money to keep up. What results is lack of devotion to the Lord.
