Mark 13:28–31 CSB
28 “Learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that he is near—at the door. 30 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Mark 13:28–37 CSB
28 “Learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that he is near—at the door. 30 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 32 “Now concerning that day or hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son—but only the Father. 33 “Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming. 34 “It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his servants, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 35 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 36 Otherwise, when he comes suddenly he might find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”

On the cross the kingdom came.

A. The fullness of time came when Christ died and rose from the dead.

Illus: I have often walked through this passage confused. When you look at the words “This generation will not pass away”, I think ok , all prophesied in the previous passage came about in Jesus’ generation… but a over simplified explanation of this passage does not take into account the way people viewed prophecy.
Almost always in the Old Testament there is a initial fulfillment with a greater fulfillment down the road.
God's kingdom is here AND is to come.
When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, he took his seat as the rightful ruler of this world.
When Jesus came, he was the fulfillment of all the words of prophecy, and the time from Adam through the law, prophecy, tabernacle, temple, and temporal kingdoms had come to an end. Jesus Christ conquered death on the cross and became this world’s rightful ruler.
It is essential that we understand what scripture teaches about Christ.... When he came, he was the apex of time. The word became flesh, the kingdom had come, the whole of God’s plan on this earth was brought into focus and fulfilled in Jesus.
Galatians 4:4–7 CSB
4 When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then God has made you an heir.

B. We are living with the first taste of God’s eternal kingdom.

Illus: Let us look at each of these specific prophecies Jesus makes: did they come to pass in Jesus’ day? Are they coming to pass in our day?
Jesus’ words were fulfilled in His day in Him.
WHen you walk in and start snacking on perfectly salted peanuts before you even sit down.
follow me:
But then you get sat and they bring the hot rolls with cinnamon butter. It does not matter what kind of diet you are on, you must eat atleast 2 if not 12 rolls.
But then you get your salad with the cheese and croutons.
BUT I have a problem at Texas Road House, my favorite thing is the Fort Worth Rib-eye. Here is the problem, after eating 12 rolls, and my salad, and peanuts, I am stuffed when the main course comes.
Follow me here. God’s kingdom has come, but it is also coming. What Christ did on the cross is just the appetizer of his coming kingdom.
Was Jesus word fulfilled, Absolutely, but will it be fulfilled again in a greater final way, yes.
Mark 13:2 CSB
2 Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another—all will be thrown down.”
Mark 13:5–8 CSB
5 Jesus told them, “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed; these things must take place, but it is not yet the end. 8 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
Mark 13:12–13 CSB
12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Mark 13:21–23 CSB
21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘See, here is the Messiah! See, there!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.
Mark 13:24–25 CSB
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation: The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; 25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
Mark 13:24–27 CSB
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation: The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; 25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 He will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

II. We look forward to the kingdom come.

Mark 13:28–31 CSB

A. There is a day coming when God will make all things new.

Illus: I love Texas Roadhouse. Whenever get to Monroe, there is no discussion about where we will eat. It is “understood” that we will be eating at Texas Roadhouse.

Revelation 21:1–6 CSB
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. 3 Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. 5 Then the one seated on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new.” He also said, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.” 6 Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give to the thirsty from the spring of the water of life.

B. We are hopeful knowing God’s reign is coming.

Mark 13:28–32 CSB
28 “Learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that he is near—at the door. 30 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 32 “Now concerning that day or hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son—but only the Father.

We know that Christ’s kingdom began on the cross and in resurection, but God was not done.
We now live in God’s kingdom for God’s Kingdom to come.
God’s kingdom to come is one where the redemption, forgiveness, grace, power, life, truth, justice and love are magnified among all peoples in all of the nations.
If we are to seek first the kingdom bought by Christ on the cross we must understand it clearly. What is God’s Kingdom and how is it built.
God is not just particular in the result, but also in the method taken to the end.
God’s intent:
Psalm 22:27–28 CSB
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. All the families of the nations will bow down before you, 28 for kingship belongs to the Lord; he rules the nations.
God’s Method:
Matthew 28:18–20 CSB
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
God’s Result:
Daniel 7:12–14 CSB
12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed, but an extension of life was granted to them for a certain period of time. 13 I continued watching in the night visions, and suddenly one like a son of man was coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was escorted before him. 14 He was given dominion, and glory, and a kingdom; so that those of every people, nation, and language should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will not be destroyed.
Psalm 22:27–28 CSB
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. All the families of the nations will bow down before you, 28 for kingship belongs to the Lord; he rules the nations.

III. Our hope must always rest in the never ending kingdom of God.

A. Live ready.

Illus: As we conclude our study on this brief prophetic apocolyptic passage, how do we respond?
1. we must live kingdom minded, pursuing God and holiness by faith.
2. We must pursue God’s kingdom in his methods.
3. We must live with the urgency both in life and mission knowing that God is coming quickly.
Mark 13:32–37 CSB
