What is the true source of a woman’s power and influence in the church?
Women in the church are to be learners (1 Timothy 2:11).
“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village.
And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.
And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.
But Martha was distracted with much serving.
And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?
Tell her then to help me.”
But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.
Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”” (, ESV)
Not leaders ().
Some Examples of this Rule:
Eve led Adam to disobey God (Genesis 3:1-6).
Sarah led Abraham to take God’s plan into his own hands (Genesis 16:1-3).
Job’s wife tried to lead him to turn from God in a time of extreme difficulty (Job 2:9-10).
Solomon’s wives led his heart away from following the Lord (1 Kings 11:1-8).
Jezebel led Ahab to bring all kinds of idolatry into Israel (1 Kings 16:29-34).
The last deception is symbolized by a woman who leads the kings of the earth (Revelation 17:1-6).
Some Exceptions to this Rule:
Deborah served as a judge in Israel because Barak had neglected his duty ().
Huldah served as a prophetess in Judah during a time of nationwide apostasy ().
Ellen White was called to the prophetic ministry after God called two men and they failed to completely fulfill the calling.
“My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them.
O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.
The Lord has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples.”
(, ESV)
Because of God’s original design ().
“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.””
(, ESV)
“But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” (, NKJV)
“For a man… is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
For man is not from woman, but woman from man.
Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.”
(, NKJV)
“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.” (, ESV)
“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”
(, ESV)
“For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.
For man was not made from woman, but woman from man.
Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.”
(, ESV)
Because of Eve’s original deception ().
“To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.””
(, ESV)
“That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.”
(, ESV)
“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
(, ESV)
“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”
(, ESV)
A woman’s strongest influence is a quiet, consistent, and Godly life.
“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”
(, ESV)
This text does not teach that women have no power or influence.
Rather, God wants women to consider how they are to exercise their power and influence.
We will see in the coming weeks that a woman’s primary role is not the lead in the church because she has an infinitely greater work to do!
God is not calling women to step down from a high position, but to step up to a higher position of greater influence.
Eve had been perfectly happy by her husband's side in her Eden home; but, like restless modern Eves, she was flattered with the hope of entering a higher sphere than that which God had assigned her.
In attempting to rise above her original position, she fell far below it.
A similar result will be reached by all who are unwilling to take up cheerfully their life duties in accordance with God's plan.
In their efforts to reach positions for which He has not fitted them, many are leaving vacant the place where they might be a blessing.
In their desire for a higher sphere, many have sacrificed true womanly dignity and nobility of character, and have left undone the very work that Heaven appointed them (Ellen G. White, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 59).
