Be Kind to One Another –
Text: ,
2 Peter 1:4–8 NKJV
by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Colossians 3:12–14 NKJV
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
Introduction:
A. Think back over your life:
1. What is the kindest thing that has ever been done for you?
* You remember it because it made an impression on you.
2. What’s the kindest thing you have ever done for someone else?
* You may have forgotten it because you expect kindness of yourself.
3. Kindness is highly prized by our society as a virtue to be cultivated.
B. However, kindness it doesn’t just instinctively occur; it must be cultivated.
1. We are born with an instinct for self-interest and for self-promotion.
a. Children must be taught to share and to play well with others.
b. Those that are raised without siblings (like me) are more difficult to teach.
2. One of the first verses we teach our children is:
32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32 NKJV
And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
C. As Christians we are commanded to develop the virtue of kindness.
1. We must add kindness:
– 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;
Colossians 3:12 NKJV
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;
2. In order to be a mature Christians, we must add kindness to our faith:
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
2 Peter 1:5–7 NKJV
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
3. Note: The reason we’re commanded to develop it because it’s not naturally there.
D. Kindness is considered a virtue in Western culture because of Christ’s influence.
1. An oriental man once expressed that:
The poor are put on the earth to be exploited by the wise. If I do not use them, they will be used be someone else.” -Unknown
2. Kindness is synonymous with Christianity because Jesus is kindness personified.
– 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
Titus 3:4–6 NKJV
But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
3. Interesting: The Romans often confused the terms for Christian and for kindness.
a. 📷📷In the Greek there is only on letter difference in the two words. (“chrestos” = kind; “Christos” = Christ)
b. Consequently, The Christians were often called the kind.”
It was an easy mistake because the Christians were so very kind.
c. The Romans were a cruel and brutal people so Christians were a stark contrast.
With this lesson we will look into God’s command that Christians “be kind to one another.”

4. God is even kind to those who hate Him and to those who rebel against Him.
a. 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Matthew 5:44–45 NKJV
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
b. – But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in (We’re not kind just return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the to the deserving.) Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. (NAS)
Luke 6:35 NKJV

Lesson Texts:

8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. 12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, , ( add ) brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;
and in your godliness, (add) brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.
