A. MOMENTUM IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD IN THE CONTEXT OF THE MISSION OF GOD

1. The Mission of God is His Glory

Genesis 1:26 ESV

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1:27 ESV

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

a. God’s glory is advanced in the expansion of His kingdom

Habakkuk 2:14 ESV

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

GLORY: weight or heaviness (something that undoes us! exposing us but CAPTIVATES, CONTROLS AND COMPELS US IN A NEW DIRECTION

ANYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED WITH ETERNAL BENEFIT AND ANYONE WHOSE LIFE HAS BEEN GENUINELY TRANSFORMED HAPPENED IN AN ENCOUNTER WITH GLORY!

IF MOMENTUM IS MASS BEING MOVED - THEN THE MOVING OF THE MASS IS THE ENCOUNTER WITH GLORY.

The glory of God is EVERYTHING! It is to be the singular pursuit of life and ministry!

2. The Mission of God’s Momentum is Always Tested

a. - The Testing of the First Adam

b. - The Golden Calf

MOSES and MOMENTUM

God called Moses to lead His people

Moses’ calling to lead this movement was initiated by a display of glory

God sustains this momentum with the ten signs or plagues/ PARTING OF THE RED SEA (a great display of Glory)

God started this momentum in glorious ways and God sustains it by displays of His glory

THEN…MOMENTUM IS STOPPED BY IDOLATRY: The golden calf

WHAT DOES MOSES SEEK IN THIS STAGNATION OF MOMENTUM?

Not a strategy or a book: He values the presence of God

Exodus 33:15–16 ESV

And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”

“if you don’t go I wont go”: Moses knew that without the presence of the Lord not only would they no be distinct; but nothing of eternal value could ever take place without His presence

Exodus 33:18 ESV

Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”

WHY DOES HE SEEK GOD’S GLORY

He wants the momentum that God provides

We see from this that after the people had been delivered miraculously momentum was halted (it would seem) by their idolatry.

How does Moses deal with this?

c. The Testing of the Last Adam

We are not called to guard our churches, but to guard His glory. When we are guarding His glory we are protecting His people. But we can guard our churches and be indifferent to His glory. That church is protecting the wrong thing

if you don’t go I wont: Moses knew that without the presence of the Lord not only would they no be distinct; but nothing of eternal value could ever take place without His presence

Jesus

Not just talk about Jesus but the Truth about Him

B. MOMENTUM IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD AS THE CALLING TO STEWARD OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Pentecost is not about tongues. Pentecost is about the continuation of the mission of God’s glory, now, through us.

Pentecost is God’s invitation to Spirit-filled men and women to participate in the end time goal of bringing the glory of the Lord to every corner of the globe

NOW- GOD’S GLORY IS THE META-NARRATIVE THAT CONTROLS AND INFORMS THE NARRATIVE OF OUR LIVES OR OUR MINISTRIES

THE SPIRIT OF GOD EMPOWERS THOSE HE FILLS WITH THE ABILITY TO FINISH THE REDEMPTIVE MISSION OF GOD: HIS GLOBAL GLORY

Through the church the PROPHETIC WORD OF HABAKKUK CAN BE REALIZED

HOW DO WE DO THIS? HOW DO WE PROTECT AND PROPEL THE MOMENTUM OF THE KINGDOM IN OUR LIVES AND IN OUR CHURCHES?

A. KNOW YOUR UNIQUE KINGDOM PURPOSE

“Your Kingdom Concept is the simple, clear, ‘big idea’ that defines how your church will glorify God and make disciples…. Rather, your Kingdom Concept is what differentiates you from every other church in how you develop followers of Christ for God’s ultimate honor (Church Unique, Mancini, 84)

“God doesn’t do generic. There is no such thing as a generic sunset, a generic snowflake, or a generic human being. Likewise there should be no such thing as a generic church or a generic future” (God Dreams, 16).

A church’s “apostolic esprit” is the area of focus that arouses an energetic style in its leaders. By apostolic I mean that this source of liveliness and animation is anchored in a missional mind-set—the self-understanding of “being sent.” Esprit is more than your passion. Esprit captures both the empowering and direction of the Holy Spirit and the human side of fervor and vitality that springs from team morale. Think of esprit as “the hot place in a man’s consciousness, the group of ideas to which and from which he works, the habitual center of his personal energy” (Church Unique, Mancini, 94)

B. MOMENTUM IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD AS THE CALLING TO STEWARD OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

This is the reason our churches exist: to be displays of His glory! This is the momentum we should seek and steward

I. THE BIBLICAL - THEOLOGICAL VIEW OF MOMENTUM

Definition of Momentum: The movement of something that was one motionless, as a result of force being applied to it.

Give some thoughts on that

But, for us, we must nuance this definition because we re not leading mere organizations: we are leading or concerned about the church- the blood brought people of God.

Paul seeking to encourage the Ephesians elders about sheperding the momentum of Ephesus does so with these words=

Acts 20:28 ESV

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

Care for the church of God: Not buildings and not primarily programming: but the souls of those we lead.

Therefore, we take our cue about momentum from
