Recap
As a result of who we are in Christ, we have been raised with Him in newness of life.
Paul has been walking through what that newness of life looks like in contrast to our old self.
We are to put off malice and anger, sexual immorality and greed.
These defined the old self.
These sins pervaded our thoughts and our hearts and intentionally keep us from the things above that Christ has called us to.
We are to put on compassions, kindness humility and forgive one another for these things describe the new self that has been redeemed by Christ.
In this process, we grow to bear with one another and we become bound by love that leads to perfect unity.
Unity and Peace
Colossians 3:13-
There is great emphasis placed on the peace that results from the gospel being at work in the lives of people.
Paul regularly points to the fact that one of the consequences of the redemption of Christ is peace.
Peace is more than a feeling or a specific set of circumstances.
Peace is the deep resounding resolution that one is secure and unwavering in their understood purpose.
Peace is found from first knowing fully that you are secure in your position and secondly knowing fully of where you are headed.
This is the fruit that Paul points the people of God to seek.
Seek peace, not for the sake of peace, but rather because Christ is ruling and reigning.
Our peace does not come from our lack of conflict or from a superior conflict resolution manual that Christians have.
Peace is rooted in the security that we find in Christ and His clear instructions for what our purpose is here as long as we take breath.
Peace is achieved only in accordance with our surrender to Christ.
Remember, we are at war, there will be conflict, but conflict is not the opposition to our peace, allowing our hearts and minds to shift to the earth is the opposition to peace.
Peace and unity come not from our agreement with one another but rather is rooted in our relationship with Jesus.
Teaching and Admonishing
Christ has not only been clear with our personal purpose, but he has been clear with his intent for the church.
The church is to be a gathering of the body for the sake of teaching and admonishing.
The church should be a gathering of teaching.
While our position is perfection, our state is not.
we are in the process of ssanctification.
We should be learning and growing each day.
If our walk become stagnent, our hope of peace and unity will halt as well.
Admonishing does not sound like something that we would enjoy as Christians, but it is an important part of our growth.
We are humans who will continually be drawn to the things of the flesh and our minds and hearts will shift from the things above.
A church functioning as it should is a place where sin is transparently shared for the sake of ridding ourselves of what keeps us from God.
This is a gift from God to call us into great dependence and surrender to God.
When we function as we should, we should be moved to worship for all of this is only possible through Him.
Jesus Reigns
Unity and peace are only possible because the good king reigns.
Apart from Christ, there is no hope for peace and unity.
The best that can be accomplished is like mindedness which only lasts until opinions and passions clash.
We are not called to be like-minded people.
We are called to be children of God, followers of one king.
we are called to be One body with One Head.
