4. Brief Introduction about Marriage

“The meaning of marriage is the display of the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his people.” John Piper
This is what marriage is.
It is a momentary display of an eternal reality. Namely, the love that Christ has for His church.
First, we see the call for wives.
Ephesians 5:22–24 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Verse 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord
To submit means to put before
This is a call for the wife to put her husband before her ownself
It is a call to be selfless
To honor and love the husband
Verse 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
The reason for the submission of the wife to her husband is so that her submission can give people a gospel display of the church’s submission to Christ.
Verse 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
“The meaning of marriage is the display of the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his people.”
That’s where you can find how and why a wife submits.
Ephesians 5:25–31 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
Verse 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
To love means to have sincere appreciation and high regard for someone To regard with affection and concern.
to have love for someone or something, based on sincere appreciation and high regard—‘to love, to regard with affection, loving concern, love.
Johannes P. Louw and Eugene Albert Nida, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains (New York: United Bible Societies, 1996), 292.
It means to sincerely appreciate and hold in high regard someone
This is a call for the wife to put her husband before her ownself
This is a call for the husband to hold his wife in high esteem. To put his wife before himself
It is a call to be selfless and sincere to her
To honor and love his wife
Verse 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
Verse 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
Verses 26-27 are talking about Christ and His church.
Christ is the one who:
Sanctifies the church
He cleanses her by the washing of water with the word
Verse 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
so that he might present the church to himself in splendor
without spot or wrinkle or any such thing
that she might be holy and without blemish
This is the example for the husband.
Verse 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Verse 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
The husband is called to love their wives as themselves
The husband is called to nourish her and cherish her just as Christ does the church
Devon. You have the great responsibility to love Linda.
Not because she is deserving of it but because of the love God has shown you.
Love is not an emotion but it is a decision. One that does not withhold the call to love and cherish her.
This is what God has commanded to husband and it is your call and by God’s grace your desire.
To love her as Christ loves His church.
