We have been going through 1 Peter.
Last week got a little touchy.... .
=22
Peter is challenging believers to live out, in the midst of darkness and evil, what they say they believe.
To live out their convictions…
belief- believe that something is true
conviction- live that belief out.
love what he says in verse 9...
Don’t… just don’t… repay evil with what???? BLESSING!! To this you were called. Called to live like this. Wow.
Belief or conviction. We can say we believe it… but tomorrow… when evil is done to you.... see, evil is done on purpose. not accident… on purpose… how we react shows us whether we have beleif or conviction.
Peter… think about what Peter watched.
Jesus… Judas
John 13:1-
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Wow!!! Jesus… not repay evil with evil. but with good.
he says “now you do the same”
Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
knowing they would desert him, deny him, he still had plans to meet them. Love.
Jesus on the cross… father forgive them.
Theif… you will be with me in paradise.
Example…leader… do not repay evil with evil.
Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
The way we live…and the way we love… living out our convictions. it’s how the world knows where you stand.
Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.
1 peter 4:1
You’re not to look like the world. You’re different. Salt. Light.
Slander you, maybe to your face, maybe behind your back.
look with me at verse 7- 11
The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
what you’re going through is temporary… so in every way make sure your life gives glory to God.
But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
1 Peter 4:13
no matter what we face!!
His glory will be revealed!!
Will never compare to what we have waiting!!
and 17.... peter get behind me… transfiguration… glory… don’t forget why we are here.
How we live and how we love matters.
