Concerning Brotherly Love
1 Thess 4:9-12
WORDS FOR LOVE
PHILADELPHIA – Familial or brotherly love; the affectionate love and care with which believers cherish one another
AGAPE – God’s perfect love, characterized by complete selflessness expressed in action by generous sacrificial giving and service for others.
1 THESSALONIANS 4:
W/ GREEK WORDS
“Now concerning philadelphia you no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to agape one another.”
1 Thessalonians 4:9-10
WHY TWO WORDS?
Paul uses the word philadelphia to specify who we’re supposed to love, and he uses the word agape to tell us how we’re supposed to love.
WITH THAT IN MIND…
“Now concerning the love you have for each other as believers, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have already been taught by God to love one another with His perfect love.”
CONCERNING BROTHERLY LOVE 1 THESSALONIANS 4:9-10
1. QUESTION: Do we need to be taught?
V. 9 “I don’t need to write anything to you about brotherly love, because God has already taught you to love each other.”
Would Paul say the same to us?
Ask the Holy Spirit, ask yourself, and be honest.
2. Correction: learn from Jesus how to love each other
For those who are not loving each other...
V.9 “You have been taught by God to love one another.”
*It’s time to let God teach you.
3. exhortation: Love each other
all the more
For those who are loving each other…
V.10 “That is what you’re doing to all the brothers in Macedonia.
But we urge you to do so more and more.”
“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.”
NKJV
“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.”
NKJV
“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.”
NKJV
“Love one another with brotherly affection.
Outdo one another in showing honor.”
ESV
Galatians 5:6
“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision or uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.”
Faith works through love.
