*Brief Preliminary Context
We will be looking at four scenes in this passage that will point you to a better understanding of why all believers and unbelievers have different fates.
1. The first part is the Title where you have this murderous deed of Doeg the Edomite being pointed out.
2. Vs. 1-4 We have a description of Doeg’s evil character.
3. Vs. 5-7 We see a prophetic denunciation of Doeg.
4. Vs. 8-9 An Antithetical Testimony of Davids Character.
*Hear now the very Word of God
52 To the choirmaster. A Maskil of David, when Doeg, the Edomite, came and told Saul, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”
1 Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?
The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
2 Your tongue plots destruction,
like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.
3 You love evil more than good,
and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
4 You love all words that devour,
O deceitful tongue.
5 But God will break you down forever;
he will snatch and tear you from your tent;
he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
6 The righteous shall see and fear,
and shall laugh at him, saying,
7 “See the man who would not make
God his refuge,
but trusted in the abundance of his riches
and sought refuge in his own destruction!”
8 But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
9 I will thank you forever,
because you have done it.
I will wait for your name, for it is good,
in the presence of the godly.
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
*Brief Prayer of Illumination -LET US PRAY
Father in heaven give us your people ears to hear what your Word and Spirit would have us to learn in Christ name AMEN.
Backstory or important facts to help us understand
· You need to know what is taught in because we all have Doegs, Saul’s and David’s in our lives.
· And you may be a Doeg Saul or David.
· And you will be tempted to serve the State or Saul’s of our Day in a sinful way like Doeg did
· Doegs have an evil sharp razorved Tounges.
· Sauls are servants of the Devil.
· But we are called to be David’s the Green olive tree’s those that point others to Christ and the work he has done.
· And we are to serve Christ rather than the wicked men in our state who serve Satan.
· will help you to understand who you are in this world and to avoid the dangers of a lying tongue that both David and DOEG BOTH fel victim to
· But the key is David Repented and
· dOEG HATED God.
· DAVID ARRIVES AT THE DOORSTEP OF THE Priest Ahimelech
Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” 2 And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place.
Doeg the Edomite betrays David and Ahimelech with his lying tongue.
.” Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, “I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10 And he inquired of the Lord for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
· Vs-2-3 Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit. You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
· Doeg kills all the men women and children when the people of God refuse.
· Doeg is not a believer he is a pretender in the visible church.
· Doeg Boasts about killing women and children and priests in vs 1 of our Psalm.
· Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?
· God is mocking Doeg by calling him mighty.
WHAT GOD THINKS OF DOEG AND DAVID
1. This is David writing this Psalm to give to the people of Israel. He instructs the choirmaster to have the people of Israel sing and understand what really happened according to God and what is actually happening in our lives.
2. Doeg and Saul are against Christ and against his anointed and they want the people not to give aid to David. Killing Ahimelech is to discourage anyone else from doing what he thought Ahimelech did for David by Doeg’s lie.
3. The only difference between Doeg the Edomite and David who were both Murders and Liars is David is repentive and David has received God’s Grace and Gods Word.
13 As it is written, “DAVID I loved, but DOEG I hated.” 14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh or DOEG, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory
· Doeg hates God and is an enemy of God and his Elect.
· And so like in Romans this same distinction is made in .
· Verse 2 The tongue that plots destruction COMPARED TO
· Verse 8 I trust in the steadfast love of God
OUR STORY CONTINUES IN THIS PSALM and in
But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 And the king said to Doeg, “You turn and kill the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. 19 Also Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing infants, oxen and donkeys and sheep—with the edge of the sword.
· Doeg used his mouth like a sharp sword and his hands followed by the killing with this sharp razor of a sword.
· Our speech is important
· You can kill a person with your words.
o “With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.”
· A tongue can destroy a whole church or a whole community
o “By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it
is overthrown.”
· You can preserve your life if you think before you speak.
o “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.”
·
o So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison
o Will you be destroyed or delivered by the use of your tongue?
o Will you be Doeg or David
o Why can you not tame your tongue apart from Jesus Christ because Jesus is the one who can change your heart.
o And the Tongue and the heart walk together, they are fellows, one determines what comes out of the other.
o For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person.
· Our Psalm describes this
o You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
o 4 You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.
o This is the human condition
o This is your condition
o And only Jesus Christ can save you from this condition cry out to him NOW!
o CRY OUT TO HIM BEFORE I FINISH THIS SERMON!
o JESUS CHRIST CAN SAVE YOU!
· This struggle of our hearts is again spoken of in
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
The Promise if we truly Trust in Christ
o There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
The Promises in this Psalm to Doeg and all unbelievers are as follows.
o Ancient Imagery we find in the Psalm that describe things.
o But God will break you down forever; Demolishing of a house
o He will snatch - Snatching of a coal from a hot fire and the coal would become cold
o and tear you from your tent; Excommunicate
o he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah Violent Eradication
THE RESPONSE OF THE RIGHTEOUS
6 The righteous shall see and fear,
and shall laugh at him, saying,
7 “See the man who would not make
God his refuge,
but trusted in the abundance of his riches
and sought refuge in his own destruction!”
o We are not to laugh at the wicked because of their wickedness we are warned in
o “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles, lest the Lord see it and be displeased, and turn away his anger from him.”
o This laughter in this Psalm describe God breaking down the wicked for justice of his people and he is defending the weak.
o How foolish is it to set yourself against God and his people?
o Doeg was the chief Shepard he was high up. One who worked for Saul and had some power.
o Doeg was probably Rich and preferred the states Favor that is Saul more that Gods Favor.
o Most men today are just like Doeg they will stand with the State the Saul’s of their Day and prefer its favor over against Gods favor and so they will come against Christians.
o Are you trusting in your own riches more than God.
o We should not fear powerful evil men because God will Judge them.
o We should rather be grateful that we are numbered with the true worshipers of God.
This is what Christians are called to be in such a society
8 But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
9 I will thank you forever,
because you have done it.
I will wait for your name, for it is good,
in the presence of the godly.
TRUE MEMEBERS OF THE CHURCH VS FALSE MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH
o True Believers are steadfast in Gods promises
o And the hypocrites will be driven away from God and will worship money, themselves and the state.
o Which one of these describes you?
Are you a vessel of mercy?
· Do you seek to live a holy life?
· Do you believe in Jesus?
· Do you have a changed life?
· Do you try to live a life after Jesus?
· And when you don’t do it perfectly because you won’t do you ask for Forgiveness.
· This is how you determine if you are a vessel of mercy?
· So, who are you?
FINAL APPLICATION SO WILL YOU BE DESTOYED OR BE DELIVERED BY GOD.
o If Doeg the Edomite was judged so severely for killing 85 priests and slaughtering a small town.
o How much more will our president and the congress of the united states and the supreme court justices and the rulers in China or you name the country be judged for the slaughter of millions of unborn babies and the slaughter of your saints for trying to worship God.
o MAY IT BE THAT THEY WILL BE SNATCHED UP BROKEN DOWN AND TORN AWAY AND UPROOTED FROM THE LAND OF LIFE, ALONG WITH ALL THOSE FALSE MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH WHO SEEK REFUGE IN THE STATE AND THE SAULS OF OUR DAY RATHER THAN JESUS CHRIST OUR KING AND SAVIOR.
*Let us pray
Father we thank you for this teaching on what it looks like to TRULY SEEK YOU GOD, SO THAT WE MIGHT BE THANKFUL THAT it is by your soverign hand THAT WE ARE DELIVED AS DAVID WAS DELIVERED. HELP US TO TURN FROM WORSHIPING MEN AND POWER IN THIS WORLD. Lord help us and enable us to turn to your son Jesus who is the only mediator between God and man.
AMEN.
