D. Pray
E. Context
a. taking a deeper look at ch. 14
1. Paul is describing the diff. btwn prophecy & tongues & why, in a congregational setting, prophecy is better
i. U’ll c a sprinkling of discussion in this ch. about tongues, but 4 the sake o time, we’ll focus on prophecy & look @ the tongues section next week
II. BODY
A. Spiritual gift of prophecy
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Cor 12:10
a. There is a difference between the leadership office of prophet & the gift of prophecy
1. A person in the leadership office of prophecy operates in multiple gifts to fulfill the leadership role
2. The simple gift of prophecy is simply one of the many gifts
3. Not everyone who operates in the gift of simple prophecy stands in the office of prophet
i. We’ll get in2 this in greater detail as we talk about the leadership gifts in a few weeks
ii. 2day we’ll talk about the simple gift of prophecy
B. What the spiritual gift of prophecy is
1 Cor 14:3
3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
a. Prophecy is the supernatural utterance in a known language
1. Defined as speaking on behalf of another
i. thus, prophecy is speaking a msg 2 another person that was spontaneously given by the H.S.
ii. Kenneth Hagin calls this “inspired utterance”
- The Holy Spirit is giving a msg to some1 4 another/others
- I want 2 b clear here…It is God’s msg…he’s the 1 speaking, using som1 2 give the msg
*Joey illust. - Occasionally Joey will stand up in our gatherings
*Good prophecy might b in 1’s own words, but the msg doesn’t:
~add to what God gave
~Often he’ll start, “my children” indicating it’s frm God, speaking to His People
~or edit what God gave to make it more comfortable
b. Prophecy is for building up
1. Defined as facilitating growth toward being like Jesus
i. as an individual, yes…but
-also 2 help the whole body grow together 2 better become the body o Christ
ii. That 2gether we r Jesus’ representative on earth; right?
-Prophecy is used to build up christ-likeness in the body...
*so we accurately represent him 2 a world who doesn’t know him!
iii. Thus, building up doesn’t = making u, me, / us feel good
-that means that just cause u don’t like the msg doesn’t mean, if headed, it doesn’t build u up!
-
2. Prophecy does not tare down!!
i. there might b correction, but it’s always 4 building, strengthening, growing a person / the congregation.
ii. U can usually tell the difference btwn taring down or correcting based on the motive o the person
-Brian B. talked about this when he discussed sowing & reaping
-practically this might be called tact: the ability to make a point w/out making an enemy.
-My dad would say its not so much what u say as how u say it
c. Prophecy is for encouragement
1. What’s encouragement?
i. not telling people what they want to hear
ii. not platitudes to make ‘em feel better.
2. Defined as calling to one’s side or to call one nearer to God
i. in this regard, the Spirit inspired word is 1 part cheerleading & 1 part coaching
-Illust. o a coach
*When I was in high school, played football
~diff. ways o motivating diff. people: practical teaching, locker room speech, in ur face yelling
^all based on what a person needed @that time
-Illust. (verbally) push, pull, shake verbally (act it out)
*great ex.
*This is How God might b calling a people 2 closer rel. w/Him through 1 o his people
ii. illust. @ a pentecostal church in TN last week
d. (Despite previous Illust) Prophecy is primarily a gift given to a member o the church for the whole church
4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
-blow past this & make it again in a bit...
1 Cor 14:4
i. & so, in this way we r calling/drawing the whole congregation nearer 2 God
-back 2...
-Bro Joey regularly operates this way & usually during praise & worship
*back 2...
1 Cor 14:
3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
e. prophecy is for consolation
1. AKA comfort
i. That is, bringing a word of comfort to the grieved/distressed
ii. here, then, prophecy looks like bringing a comforting word from God to a person who’s broken
2 cor 1:
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
f. Prophecy is for the congregation
4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
(Remember, this is From God)
1. & so, in this way we r calling/drawing the whole congregation nearer 2 God
i. Bro Joey regularly operates this way & usually during praise & worship
g. Simple prophecy is powered by general faith
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function,
1. Illust. Branson…speaking 2 a teen
i. didn’t know what I was going to say
ii. had to step out in faith that God would tell me what to say there & then
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
6
iii. I had to speak in proportion to the faith I had.
2. Prophecy is 2 b spoken when we r certain it’s from God & give all God has given, no more / less
i. its not telling people what we think is right/wrong
3. prophecy is 2 b spoken when we r certain it’s from God & give all God has given, no more / less
i. Good prophecy might b in 1’s own words, but the msg doesn’t:
- add to what God gave
- or edit what God gave to make it more comfortable
- That’s why it takes faith
