Honoring your Church Leaders
Honoring your Church Leaders
5:17 Give respect to those doing a good job
Elders with a gift of leadership should be considered worthy of respect, and of adequate salary, particularly if they work hard at their preaching and teaching. JBP
The roles of the elders
The possibility of 2 different elders needed to fulfill the 2 roles (Calvin) or the 2 roles fulfilled by one elder with the emphasis on preaching and teaching
First role is to rule well, “direct the affairs of the church”
Rule is to guide and lead
Rule is to manage
Well is rightly
Well is to do it happily
Well is good or accurately
Look back at qualifications in
The second role is to labor in the word (preaching) and doctrine (teaching)
but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
Acts 6:
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
5:18 Show your appreciation with support
Scripture sets the principle for supporting those in full time service
Paul quotes
Paul quotes
He uses the same passage in to instruct that full time workers should be supported in their ministry
If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?
Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
He used the same passage in to instruct that full time workers should be supported in their ministry
He quotes Jesus calling it Scripture as well
And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.
1 Corinthians 9:
If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?
Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
5:19 Be cautious with accusations made against an elder
He also quotes Jesus from Luke
And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
Follow the Old Testament principle and command
Luke
nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.
Whoever is deserving of death shall be put to death on the testimony of two or three witnesses; he shall not be put to death on the testimony of one witness.
“One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.
Follow the teaching of Jesus
“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.
Matthew 18:15-
De
But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’
Matthew 18:
The danger of social media hinders the steps of this instruction
5:20 Those who are found guilty follow the instructions of Jesus
“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.
Sinning means this was the pastor’s continuous action not just occasional failure
The danger of social media hinders the steps of this instruction
The public rebuke had a two-fold purpose
The goal of leading the pastor to a place of repentance and restoration
The goal to show the seriousness of sin and the need for the fear of the Lord
Choosing your church leaders
Choosing your church leaders
5:21 The charge to Timothy in choosing these leaders
It’s a solemn and serious act in monitoring and choosing someone to lead the church
Three witnesses to the choosing
God
The Lord Jesus Christ
The faithful angels
This implies that angels are watching the affairs of the church and world
The orders are to be followed precisely and strictly
No impartiality
No favoritism
5:22 The cautiousness Timothy must use in choosing these leaders
Take your time
Be as thorough as you can be so not to share in their sin if there is any
Keep yourself pure by not missing, overlooking, or condoning sin
5:23 Take care of yourself Timothy
5:24-25 Don’t judge by appearance Timothy
This caution reaffirms the need for church membership and careful examination of those put into positions of leadership and teaching
God sees the heart and knows all things
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.
“As a partridge that broods but does not hatch,
So is he who gets riches, but not by right;
It will leave him in the midst of his days,
And at his end he will be a fool.”
“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
5:24 Detection of sin
Some men’s sin are clearly seen and are leading the way to judgement
Cleary evident is obvious
Clearly evident is evident beforehand
Clearly evident is known to all
Preceding is to go before or to escort on their way
Some men’s sins are not as easy to detect but will eventually be revealed possibly at the judgement
To follow later is to closely follow after
Then Moses said to them: “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before the Lord for the war, and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven out His enemies from before Him, and the land is subdued before the Lord, then afterward you may return and be blameless before the Lord and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the Lord. But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.
in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.
And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.
Their sin might not be so obvious but time will reveal such
5:25 Goods works are governed by the same principle
