# 37 in the LASB also #37 in the CLASB

Int he last 3 events, we saw that Jesus taught with Great Authority, Jesus healed Peter’s mother in law, and that He preached throughout Galilee. Jesus preached the same message of John the Baptist Repent and Believe. That same message still works today.
Some folks count this as a parallel passage to and . Which is the way it is presented in the Scofield and several others.
J. Vernon McGee counted it as a separate event which is supported by Jamison, Fawcet and Brown.

Not their first call, however, recorded in Jn 1:35–42; nor their second, recorded in Mt 4:18–22; but their third and last before their appointment to the apostleship. That these calls were all distinct and progressive, seems quite plain. (Similar stages are observable in other eminent servants of Christ.)

And Warren Wiersbie says:
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Difference Jesus Makes (Luke 5)

This event is not parallel to the one described in Matthew 4:18–22 and Mark 1:16–20. In those accounts, Peter and Andrew were busy fishing, but in this account they had fished all night and caught nothing and were washing their nets. (If nets are not washed and stretched out to dry, they rot and break.) Jesus had enlisted Peter, Andrew, James, and John earlier, and they had traveled with Him in Capernaum and Galilee (Mark 1:21–39), but then they went back to their trade. Now He would call them to a life of full-time discipleship.

The CLASB has them together.
Luke 5:1 AV
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

5:1 The Lake of Gennesaret is also known as the Sea of Galilee and the Sea of Tiberias.

Jesus had been preaching and healing and more and more people wanted to hear what He had to say. People wanted and needed a message of hope. Notice that they “pressed upon Him”. Everyone wanted to come and hear Jesus. They all wanted to hear the message of hope.
I think we are in the same shape today. Many want and need a message of hope. Jesus is that hope. Not only that, He is the only Hope. We should preach the same message Repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Jesus had been preaching in the Synagogues now he is preaching to great crowd at the Sea of Galilee.
Luke 5:2 AV
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
As we will see, the Fishermen had fished all night long. They had not caught anything but they still had to clean and maintain their nets and boats to get ready to go out again the next night.
I kind of think the crowds were pressing so hard on Jesus that He was running out of room. They wanted to hear the Word of God.
Jesus could have passesd through the crowd as He had done in Nazareth but Jesus wanted to teach and share the good news with all of these people. Instead of leaving, Jesus makes use of the boats as a platform top teach from. It is just another demonstration of Jesus’s love and longsuffering for people.
Luke 5:3 AV
And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
Jesus who had talked with Peter on atleast two other occasions asked him to push out in the water so that He could teach the crowd.
Peter got to sit in the boat and listen to Jesus teach, what a priveledge that must have been.
It was custumary for the teachers to sit and teach. I understand that in this spot the sound carries really well and everyone would have been able to hear Jesus as He taught.
Luke 5:4 AV
Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
Here sits Peter, He has worked hard all night. Throwing and pulling those nets is really hard work. It had probably been really hot, he was probably hungry and tired and probably needed a bath. He had sit and listened to Jesus teach. He was probably ready to go home and get some sleep so that he could come back that night and start all over again.
Jesus looks at Him and tells Him to everything that was contrary to Peter’s fishing experiance.
I think sometimes we are in this same place. We have worked and worked, we have strugggled and battled. We are tired and ready to quit and then the Pastor comes and ask you if you could do something else.
Not just the pastor but that still small voice. It is not loud but man is it persistant. It just will not easr up. You are thinking to yourself, I am doing all I can do. Somebody else needs to do this. After all, there is all kind of people that are not doing anything for the cause of Christ, let them do it. I imaging those things were going through Peter’s mind.
Peter, not wanting to disappoint Jesus and not wanting to feal guilty, telly Jesus he will do what has been ask of him
Luke 5:5 AV
And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
Peter called Him “Master”(Mostly in Luke) in the Other Gospels they usually call Him Rabbi.
I can imagine Peter thinking still, I am going to do this even though it is an absolute waste of time and I don’t have time to waste, but I am going to do it anyway. I imagine it was a half hearted attempt. You know, doing something just because you have to. Let’s just get it over with.
Notice that they had to follow Jesus’s instructions. Somtimes we want tot do what God tells us but we want to do it our way in our time. We have to do what God wants, the way He tells us and when He tells us to do it. They followed Jesus’s instructions, probably half hearted and look what happened.
Luke 5:6 AV
And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
Imagine the suprise when they realize that they had just couight the most fish they had ever cought at one time. There were so many fish theat the nets could barley stand the strain.
We have to fish the same way, we have to follow the instructions. We typically do not not rrecieve the instructions audibly, we have to read them. (J.Vernon McGee).
J. Vernon McGee also noted that here their nets broke. The fish they caught here could hae escaped, The next time Jesus provides a Miraculas Catch of Fish, the nets hold up just fine. The first time is before the Crucifiction and Ressurection next rime is after those events. They happen under two different dispensations. .
Luke 5:7 AV
And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
It was time for some help and they called out to their partners to come and help them.
The blessing for obedieance was so big that they needed help to drag it in. God just wants our ovbediance and He will poor out more blessings that we could ever imagine.
Too offten, we are disobedient and we cheat ourselves out of the blessings that God has for us.
God does not need us to get His work done, He allows us to be a part of what He is doing and then will bless us beyond what we can imagine.
I think this is also a picture of the body of Christ working together. We are not on some little island all to ourselves there are other belivers out there and whether we like it or not, we have other brothers and sisters in Christ and they are apart of what God is doinjg as well. We saw some of this at the back to school bash, we saw some of this with the hurricane relief to Texas and Florida. We get to this when we go to Jamaica. We see this with the Gideons and other Christian organizations. Sometimes God wants us to work together with other churches. When we do, we get a lot more accomplished and the blessings are usually bigger as well.
An example of this is the rebuilding of the city walls around Jerusalem during the time of Nehemiah. Familes and groups were assigned sections of the wall to fix and defend. This is kind of a picture of individual churches taking care of their section of the wall. We all have our place and our assignements. But in Nehemiah’s day if the trumpet blew, some of your group had to go help the other group. Sometimes the trumpet blows and we have to go and help others. Sometimes, we have to blow the trumpet and the othersd have to come and help us.
Peter had to blow the trumpet so to speak and the others had to come help. In this case it was help hauling in all of the blesssings that God had provided.
They immediately knew this was a miracle. They were in the presence of something much bigger than themselves.
Luke 5:8 AV
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
This is a great picture of Holy Spirit conviction. When the word of God convicts you of your sins/ When all of our sins are brought to the forefront, right out in public for everyone to see. In the Old Testament the analogy is lifting your skirt over your head exposing your self. Back then is was considered a shame and disgrace. Nothing was hidded and you was totally exposed.
Peter was convited of His sin.
Not only that but Peter is admitting his inablity and sin is the best prerecuisite for service. (Thomas Constable qotuing Darrell Bock I think).
Also happened to other people in the Bible
Job 42:6 AV
Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
Job 42.6
Isaiah 6:5 AV
Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
Isiaah
This is also a picture of the kind of evangelistc impact Peter will have.
Luke 5:9 AV
For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
Everyone involved realized they had just seen a Miracle.
Luke 5:10 AV
And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
Jesus re affirms His call to Peter, James, John probably Andrew, Phillip and Nathaniel and possibly others.
This is also prophetic. .
Luke 5:11 AV
And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
In the prior meetings with Jesus, they had returned to their work. Now it is time to follow Jesus from here on out.
