Two visible signs of the Judean restoration would be the reestablishment of the monarchy and the rebuilding of the ruined temple. The ending of 2 Kings points to the former possibility in its mention of the elevation in 560 of King Jehoiachin to eat at the table of the Babylonian King Evilmerodach. His new status meant to the exiles that if they were ever allowed to return to Judah, their king would be free to go with them. As it turned out, the exile outlasted Jehoiachin, but his grandson Zerubbabel did return to Judah, probably about 521.
God used Haggai to speak this truth into the lives of the Jewish exiles, but He also encouraged them with His presence: “I am with you” (Hag 1:13).

Father, in Jesus’ name, speak to us again, Holy Spirit. Reveal Jesus to us greater than we’ve ever know Him before. Lord, secure our hearts in the holy fear of God as well as the love of God, in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
Can you believe we are already on Session 6? Wow! The title of this session is “The Coming Glory.” How many of you believe we are living in the final days of Church age? How many of you believe the Lord is coming back soon? Can I say something? Jesus said we would not know the day or the hour, but we would know the season. Let me tell you, you have to be spiritually blind if you don’t know we’re living in the season.
The prophetic scriptures foretold how God would reveal His glory in a mighty way at the onset of the Church age and again at the close of the Church age just prior to His second coming. The Apostle James says in James 5:7 (NKJV), “Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth.” What is the precious fruit of the earth? Souls! The precious fruit of the earth is souls! “… waiting patiently for it”—the harvest of the precious fruit of souls—“until it receives the early and latter rain.” The early rain began on the Day of Pentecost; the latter rain is yet to come. There have been times past where I’ve heard ministers say, “We’re in the latter rain! We’re in the latter outpouring of God’s glory!” I’m saying, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy! Your vision is far too small. If this is the outpouring of God’s glory, then I am, of all people, miserable and disappointed.” Many times these ministers do it out of ignorance; they may have a genuine move of God. But you can’t say it’s an outpouring of the latter rain. With others it’s spiritual laziness; they want to just say, “Well, you know, we’re going to just check out and fly out of here.” They don’t want to face the work of the harvest field. For other people it’s just pure hype. This is most dangerous because it’s very irreverent when you hype people saying, “We’re in the latter rain,” when you know we’re not. God spoke something to me about that one day; He said, “Son, those who settle for the artificial will never see the real.” Wow, wow, wow! We have been created for God to co-exist with His glory. That’s His goal for you! If we’re honest, we’ll admit that we His temple are not yet prepared for His glory. The temple is still under construction, divine order is being restored within the hearts of the people today.
There is another time in Israel’s history that really, really coincides with where we’re at today. After 70 years of captivity—they were in Babylon and then under the Persians—God then was able to start sending His people back to the Promised Land to rebuild the walls, the temple, and the nation. Nehemiah was the one really in charge of the walls, but there was now another time in which God said, “It’s time to rebuild that temple.” When they started rebuilding the temple, everybody was enthusiastic; they were working really hard. But then they got the foundation laid, and all of a sudden people were more worried about their personal affairs than the building of God’s house. So God raised up a prophet; his name was Haggai.
Haggai goes to the people after 16 years of not working on the temple, and he says in Haggai 1:4, “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?” The Israelites had lost their perspective. Things weren’t going well for them; they were pursuing their own success. God made this statement to them through the prophet Haggai in verses 9 and 10: “ ‘You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?’ ” says the Lord of hosts. ‘Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. Therefore the heavens above you withhold the rain [dew], and the earth withholds its fruit.’ ” What did James say? “The farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth until it receives the early and latter rain.” So you can see the correlation here. God is saying to Israel in the natural, “The heavens are not raining; therefore, your crops are not growing. You’re not getting the fruit, the harvest, you used to get when you were working really hard on My temple.” The rain had been withheld from their harvest. Removals or withholdings that God does is not Him being mean to us; it is Him simply saying, “I’m trying to get you to cry out for Me once again.”
Is our dilemma today so different? We too live in an era of restoration. The Book of Acts says (3:21) that heaven must received Jesus until the times of restoration of all things. In other words, what was lost in the early rain will be restored in the latter rain. But heaven will hold Jesus until the restoration of all things. It is so important that you understand that. The scriptures promise that all lost will be restored prior to His return. I really think we have behaved, in my last 20 years of ministry, like Israel did. We’ve sought out comfort, we’ve sought out lives of ease. Our best has been given to our old and paneled houses. We’ve sought personal success and enjoyed comfort and security. Later God questioned Israel through the prophet Malachi. Malachi lived in the century of Haggai, during the same restoration period. Malachi expounded on what Haggai was talking about. God said through the prophet Malachi, “A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. I am your Father, and I am your Master. Where are the honor and respect I deserve?” This is God asking His leaders and people! “ ‘You have despised My name, but you ask, “How have we ever despised Your name?” When you give blind animals as sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And isn’t it wrong to offer animals that are crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor and see how pleased he is with you,’ says the Lord God Almighty” (Malachi 1:6–8). God was given second-best while the people retained the best for themselves. “Offer, then, what you’ve given to Me to your governor,” God says. I would say it like this, “Offer it to your boss and see how you would be treated.” I would be willing to say that if most American Christians treated their employment the way they treat the house of God, they’d be fired within a week. We come into churches 10 minutes late, we don’t serve in the church, we get upset if the service goes longer than an hour and 30 minutes, we give God tips. We’ll go and honor Hollywood with $20 for popcorn and two movie seats, but we give God a $5-offering and think we’re being generous. The pastor will call a prayer meeting, and a fraction of the church shows up—and I’m talking a small fraction. If the weather’s bad, we don’t go. If the weather’s too nice, let’s enjoy it. How long would this job performance last in most employment places today? That’s what God was saying; “Why don’t you offer the way you serve Me to your bosses and see how long you would be gainfully employed.” This behavior before God is irreverence before the Lord. Most of us will work long, hard hours to maintain a standard of living, yet it pains us if the service on Sunday goes a half hour past the time we believe it should’ve concluded. It’s this behavior that keeps the latter rain of God from our latter-day Church. This is what’s holding back the precious fruit of the earth.
Israel changed because of the preaching of Haggai. In verse 12 it says, “Israel obeyed the voice of the Lord their God”—I love that! “And the words of Haggai the prophet”—isn’t that something? They obeyed the voice of the Lord and Haggai the prophet. “As the Lord their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the Lord.” The fear of the Lord was restored. They weren’t irreverently giving God second-best anymore. Reverence was restored, now the focus was again on the temple; their personal interests were secondary. Don’t get me wrong, God wants you blessed! How many times have I seen people who have testified to me, “Oh my goodness, our personal lives were so blessed when we put the things of God first!” I’ve heard it time and time and time again! When we fear God, we will always place His interests above our own. We need preachers today like Haggai and Malachi. Our messages today are going down from 50 minutes, to 40 minutes, to even 30 minutes. I’ve traveled thousands of miles and had pastors tell me, “You have 30 minutes to get your message out.” Yet, we go to a secular university, and they have 50-minute classes. We got to high schools and have 50-minute classes. How are we supposed to convey the Word of God in 30 minutes?! I submit to you that we would be one of the worst-educated nations if we treated our schools the way we have educated the Church in America. Our messages today no longer inspire not only the love of God in people, but our messages also don’t inspire the fear of the Lord. Our messages really build people up to give them a more comfortable life instead of being the Word of God that passes into the heart and discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart. Don’t get me wrong; there are times we must encourage, there are times we must build up. But I see in the New Testament that there are times for correction and rebuke. I find those times are what save my life. Paul said, “In order to present every man perfect in Christ, we have to warn them and teach them” (Colossians 1:28). We love the teachings, but we have shunned the warnings.
Then Haggai pointed out the present condition. After the people started obeying the voice of God, Haggai then came up with this in chapter 2, verse 3: “Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory?” (NKJV) You have to remember they were in captivity for 70 years. There were some people who were 85, 90 years old who remembered the glory of that temple. Let me read it again—Haggai 2:3—“Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, is this not in your eyes as nothing?” He’s saying, “All right, if you remember the former temple before captivity, and you’re looking at the temple now, how does the temple now compare to what it was before? It’s nothing.” I believe God is asking the same question today. “How many of you remember the Church in its former glory in the Book of Acts, and how do you see it today in comparison?” I think if we’re really honest, we’d say, “In our eyes, it’s nothing.” I can prove it to you.
On the first day of Pentecost, they don’t even announce the meeting and 3,000 souls get saved at 9 o’clock in the morning! And then at 3 o’clock that afternoon, they walk in the temple and raise up a man who had been crippled at that temple for years and years and years because he was born a cripple. That man jumps up, and 5,000 people get saved! The church went from 120, as I said, to 8,120 on the first day. Peter and John were arrested, brought in question, and released from the questioning. They went back to the church, the church prayed, and the building shook! How many of you know the Bible can’t exaggerate? I know there are fishermen and preachers who exaggerate, but the Bible can’t exaggerate because it’s a lie, and God cannot lie! If the building shook, it shook! They walked out, and the Bible says there were notable miracles being done by the hands of the apostles. Then a couple went up and lied about their offering and fall over dead. Then Peter walked out to the streets—not the street of Jerusalem, the streets of Jerusalem—and everybody who even went near his shadow—I believe it was the cloud of God—got healed, was raised up, crippled people started walking, when his shadow just walked down the streets and touched them! Then, every house heard the Word of God—and there wasn’t satellite or radio communication—because the believers were preaching in every house. Then they get scattered, and a man who was waiting on widows’ tables went down to a city in Samaria, and the Bible says the whole city in Samaria got saved. Then the Spirit of God sent that man into the wilderness where he won the number three man in all of Ethiopia, then disappeared and was translated to another place. Peter went down to a place called Lydda, and there was a man who had been crippled for eight years; he raised the man up, and the Bible says both Lydda and Sharon, twin cities, all get saved when they saw that man walking.
I know we see churches today that might have 8,000–9,000 people, but what about the other 3 million people in that city who sleep in? Why are the highways congested on Friday afternoon, but on Sunday morning you can drive to church without any kind of traffic jam? But yet whole cities were getting saved! We also see that they said in the city of Thessalonika, Greece
